Most Maldives pages sell resorts. This trip does something different: you stay on Maafushi, an inhabited island where about three thousand Maldivians actually live, and you snorkel the same reefs and sit on the same sandbanks for a fraction of what a private island costs. That trade is real and worth making, but it comes with rules that a resort holiday does not have, and nobody enjoys learning them on arrival.

Local island or resort: what you are choosing

A resort occupies its own island, so the only people there are guests and staff, and normal resort life applies: alcohol at the bar, swimwear anywhere, no local rules to think about. Maafushi is a village. There are shops, a school, a mosque and families. Tourism sits alongside all of that rather than replacing it.

What you gain is cost and a sense of the actual country. What you give up is the private beach in front of your room. The reefs, the water and the sandbanks are identical, because they are the same atoll.

The rules on Maafushi, plainly

Two things catch visitors out, and both are easy once you know.

Swimwear is confined to Bikini Beach. That is a marked stretch at the northern end of the island, and it is the only place bikinis and swim shorts are appropriate. Walking back through the village, cover up. Everywhere else on the island, shoulders and knees covered, for men and women, and nothing transparent or very tight.

Alcohol is not legally available on the island. The Maldives is a Muslim country and guesthouses on inhabited islands are not licensed to serve it. What Maafushi has instead is a floating bar moored offshore, which is where guests go for a drink. Do not bring alcohol with you either: duty free bottles are confiscated at Velana and returned to you on departure.

Neither rule is enforced aggressively at tourists, and nobody will be rude about a mistake. But respecting them is the difference between being a guest and being a nuisance.

When to go

The dry northeast monsoon runs November to April and is the season for this trip: clear skies, calm water and the best snorkelling visibility. December to March is the sweet spot and also the most expensive. April still works but afternoon showers start.

May to October is the wet southwest monsoon, with short heavy rain, more wind and lower prices. It is not a write off, and it is the better window for manta rays and whale sharks further out, but boat trips are cancelled more often and the sandbank day depends on calm water.

Getting there and the transfer trap

You fly into Velana International Airport at Male. From there the shared speedboat to Maafushi takes around forty five minutes and runs on a fixed daytime schedule, several departures a day rather than on demand.

That schedule is the one thing to plan around. The last shared boat leaves in the late afternoon or early evening depending on the operator. If your flight lands late at night, there is no boat, and the choice becomes a private speedboat at a significant extra cost or an unplanned night in Hulhumale next to the airport. The excursion day

The half day trip is the reason to book a package rather than wing it. You snorkel two coral reefs, stop at a sandbank with lunch served on the sand, and look for dolphins on the way back.

Two honest notes. The specific reefs are chosen on the day for sea conditions, so we do not promise particular names. And the dolphins are wild spinner dolphins: they are seen often, especially in the afternoon, but no operator can guarantee them. Shared excursions also need a minimum number of guests, so in a very quiet week the trip may merge with another or move a day.

On the reef itself, do not touch or stand on coral and do not chase or feed anything. Beyond the obvious, the Maldives now regulates marine encounters formally, and reef damage is what closes sites.

Costs that are not in the package price

This catches people out everywhere in the Maldives, so it is worth being straight about it.

The government charges a Green Tax per person per night, at a lower rate for guesthouses on inhabited islands than for resorts, and a goods and services tax on tourism services on top of accommodation and excursions. Both are additional to the package price and payable in the Maldives. There are also airport departure and development fees for foreign passengers, but those are collected inside your air ticket, so you will not be asked for them at the counter.

None of this is a surprise charge invented by anyone; it is national tax law. We would rather you know the shape of it before you go than be annoyed at checkout.

Entry, and what to file before you fly

Nepali passport holders do not need a visa in advance. The Maldives issues a free thirty day visa on arrival to every nationality. Your passport should be valid more than six months beyond arrival, and immigration can ask for a return ticket and confirmed accommodation.

What you must do is the Traveller Declaration on the official IMUGA portal, imuga.immigration.gov.mv. It is free, it is submitted within the ninety six hours before your flight, and every traveller needs their own, including infants. Filing earlier than ninety six hours makes it invalid. It is required for arrival only; the old departure form was discontinued. Several third party sites charge for this. Do not use them.

Two bans worth knowing

Vapes and e-cigarettes are completely banned in the Maldives, for everyone including tourists, at any age. Import, possession and use are all prohibited. Arriving with one is not a disaster, it is confiscated at the border against a receipt and returned when you leave, but using one carries a fine. The simplest answer is to leave it at home.

Separately, since November 2025 anyone born on or after 1 January 2007 cannot buy or use tobacco in the Maldives, and that applies to visitors as well. Worth knowing if a younger member of the family is travelling.

Money, connectivity and practical basics

The Maldivian rufiyaa is the currency, but tourism runs on US dollars and cards are accepted almost everywhere on Maafushi. Carry some small dollar notes for tips and the smaller shops. There are ATMs on the island.

Buy a tourist SIM at the airport on arrival; coverage on Maafushi and the surrounding atoll is good. Tap water is desalinated and generally safe on the island, but bottled water is standard and free at most hotels. Bring reef safe sunscreen, a rash guard for a long snorkelling day, and something light with sleeves for walking through the village.

Who this trip suits

Couples, friends and families who want the Maldives without resort pricing, and who are comfortable being in a real community rather than a private island.
