Two Countries, Two Very Different Paces

This 7-day trip combines two of Gomayu's individually strong destinations into a single itinerary: three nights of Maldives beach and island life on Maafushi, followed by three nights covering Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and Kandy. The two halves offer a genuine contrast, unstructured island time followed by a more heritage-focused itinerary, making this a well-rounded trip for travelers who want both in one booking rather than choosing between them.

Arrival and Hulhumalé

The journey opens with a flight through Colombo, connecting onto an evening sector to Malé the same day. Nepali citizens receive a free visa-on-arrival in the Maldives for up to 30 days, requiring a passport valid for at least six months, proof of hotel booking, and a return flight ticket. Since it's typically too late in the day for a seaplane transfer to a resort island by the time this flight lands, the itinerary checks in at a Hulhumalé beachfront hotel instead, a short 10-minute transfer from the airport, with the evening left unscheduled.

Maafushi: The Maldives on a Budget

Day 2 covers the morning speedboat to Maafushi, one of the most visited local islands in the Maldives and known as something of a budget-travel capital, since local islands like Maafushi allow independent guesthouses and hotels rather than requiring a private resort booking, at a fraction of the cost of the country's famous overwater villa resorts. The designated bikini beach, a specific stretch of shoreline set aside for swimwear in line with local island custom, gives the afternoon its plan.

Day 3 covers Maafushi's signature excursion: a shared boat trip to a sandbank that only surfaces at low tide, followed by reef snorkeling with a good chance of spotting turtles and reef sharks in the surrounding water. Returning via the island's dolphin pods at dusk is a common and often reliable sighting on this route, closing the day with dinner on the island itself.

Back to Colombo and On to Sigiriya

Day 4 covers the return journey: a speedboat to Malé, a midday flight to Colombo, and a chauffeur-guide meeting travelers for the drive inland to the Cultural Triangle. This is a genuinely long travel day, and the itinerary leaves the evening unscheduled once travelers check in near Sigiriya.

Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy

Day 5 covers an early climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress, passing ancient frescoes and the fortress's lion's-paw entrance on the way to the summit, followed by Dambulla's cave temple complex on the road south to Kandy. The evening's ceremony at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist site, gives the day a meaningful close.

Peradeniya and the Coast

Day 6 covers a morning at Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens before the drive to Negombo for the final night, positioning travelers close to the airport ahead of departure.

Getting Home

Day 7 is kept simple, with an early breakfast and transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for departure.

Best Time to Visit

December through April offers the most reliable conditions across both halves of this trip, with calmer seas for the Maafushi excursions and comfortable sightseeing weather in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and Kandy.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

US Dollars are widely accepted throughout the Maldives alongside the local Rufiyaa, while Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency once in Sri Lanka. Water activities in Maafushi are weather-dependent, with life jackets and safety gear provided during excursions. Given how much this itinerary depends on connecting flights and a same-day speedboat-to-flight transition on Day 4, building in some buffer time when booking onward Sri Lanka-side transport is worth considering in case of delays on the Maldives leg.
