A Focused, Single-City Shanghai Trip

Gomayu's existing China packages pair Shanghai with Beijing or a wider multi-city route through Xi'an and Guilin. This itinerary takes the opposite approach, staying entirely within Shanghai for the full 5 days and going deeper into the city's contrasts between colonial-era architecture and modern skyline than a multi-city itinerary typically allows time for.

Arriving in Shanghai

Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is the arrival and departure point. Staying near the Bund or People's Square puts travelers within walking distance of Shanghai's most iconic waterfront, with the Bund itself and the Pudong skyline across the river both visible and walkable from Day 1, without requiring any organized activity that first evening.

The Bund, Yu Garden, and Nanjing Road

Day 2 covers Shanghai's historic core. The Bund, a stretch of colonial-era buildings along the Huangpu River, sits directly opposite the futuristic Pudong skyline, giving the walk a striking contrast between old and new Shanghai in a single view. Yu Garden, a classical Chinese garden dating to the Ming dynasty, offers a quieter, more contemplative stop, with the surrounding bazaar giving a livelier counterpoint just outside its walls. The afternoon continues along Nanjing Road, one of the world's busiest shopping streets, and the Former French Concession, known for its tree-lined streets and preserved early 20th-century architecture.

Pudong and the Shanghai Tower

Day 3 crosses the river to Pudong, Shanghai's modern financial district. The Shanghai Tower, the second-tallest building in the world, offers an observation deck with sweeping views back over the city and the Bund. A visit to either the Shanghai Museum, known for its collection of Chinese ceramics, bronzes, and paintings, or the China Art Museum, housed in the former China Pavilion from the 2010 World Expo, rounds out the day with a cultural stop suited to the group's interest. The evening Huangpu River cruise closes the day by putting both of Shanghai's skylines, the historic Bund and the modern Pudong towers, on display simultaneously after dark.

Zhujiajiao Water Town

Day 4 shifts pace entirely with a drive out to Zhujiajiao, a well-preserved canal town often described as Shanghai's version of a "water village," with stone bridges dating to the Ming and Qing dynasties still spanning its waterways. A hand-poled boat ride through the canals and a walk along the old stone lanes offer a much quieter, slower experience than the city center, a useful contrast after two days of urban sightseeing. Returning by late afternoon leaves the evening free for Tianzifang, a warren of art studios and boutiques in converted alleyway housing, or Xintiandi, a more polished dining and entertainment district built around restored shikumen architecture.

Departure

The final morning is left free for last-minute shopping along Nanjing Road or at a local market before the transfer to the airport.

Best Time to Visit

September through November and March through May generally offer Shanghai's most comfortable weather, avoiding the city's hot, humid summers and its cold, damp winters. Rain is possible year-round, so packing a light umbrella or rain jacket is worth doing regardless of season.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the local currency, and mobile payment apps are widely used across Shanghai, though carrying some cash is still useful for smaller vendors, particularly in Zhujiajiao. English signage and service are more common in Shanghai than in many other Chinese cities, given its status as an international business hub, making independent exploration on free days, like Day 1 evening or Day 4 evening, relatively straightforward. Comfortable walking shoes matter throughout, particularly for the extensive walking involved along the Bund, Nanjing Road, and Zhujiajiao's stone lanes.
