Where the shorter Shimla-Manali packages cover the two best-known hill stations, this 9-day itinerary goes further, adding Dharamshala and Dalhousie to the route. It's built for travelers who want a fuller picture of Himachal Pradesh rather than just its two most-visited towns, taking in Tibetan culture, colonial hill-station charm, and one of the region's most scenic meadows along the way.

Delhi to Shimla

The journey opens with arrival in Delhi and the drive to Shimla, stopping at Pinjore Gardens or the Timber Trail ropeway at Parwanoo. Arriving in Shimla by evening allows an initial stroll along The Mall and The Ridge, home to the well-known Christ Church.

Shimla, Kufri, and Manali

Day 2 covers Shimla's core sights, including a morning excursion to Kufri and an afternoon taking in Jakhu Temple, the Vice Regal Lodge, Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, and Scandal Point. Day 3 continues to Manali via the Kullu Valley alongside the River Beas, stopping at Kullu's shawl factories along the way.

Manali and the Atal Tunnel

Days 4 and 5 cover Manali's temples and Solang Valley, followed by a full-day excursion to the Atal Tunnel, connecting Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti Valley at over 13,000 feet. Dharamshala: Little Lhasa in India

Day 6 shifts the trip's focus, driving from Manali to Dharamshala via Baijnath, known for its ancient Shiva temple, and Palampur, known for its tea gardens. Dharamshala has been home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1960, earning it the nickname "Little Lhasa in India," and Day 7's sightseeing reflects this: McLeodganj and the Dalai Lama's residence, the Tibetan War Memorial, Bhagsunath Temple, and Dal Lake all sit within this culturally distinct part of Himachal, a noticeably different atmosphere from Shimla and Manali's more conventional hill-station character.

Dalhousie and Khajjiar

The remainder of Day 7 covers the drive to Dalhousie, a quieter, less commercialized hill station with a strong colonial-era character. Day 8 is dedicated to Khajjiar, often described as the "Mini Switzerland of India" for its expansive meadow ringed by dense deodar forest, along with Dalhousie's own sights, including Panjpulla, a scenic spot built around a natural water source, and Subhash Baoli, a stepwell associated with Indian independence leader Subhas Chandra Bose.

Getting Home

The final day covers the drive to Chandigarh, where the trip concludes with a drop at the airport or railway station for onward travel, rather than looping back through the full Himachal circuit again.

Best Time to Visit

March through June and September through November generally offer the most comfortable travel conditions across this extended circuit. Winter (December through February) brings snow to the higher elevations, particularly affecting the Atal Tunnel and potentially Khajjiar and Dalhousie, while the monsoon months (July-August) carry landslide risk on mountain roads throughout the region.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Indian Rupee (INR) is the local currency. Given how extensive the driving is across this 9-day circuit, travelers prone to motion sickness may want to plan accordingly, particularly for the longer Manali-Dharamshala and Dalhousie-Chandigarh legs. Warm layers are worth packing throughout, since even Dharamshala and Dalhousie sit at meaningful elevation and can turn cool in the evenings regardless of season.
