Kerala's Classic Three-Region Circuit

This 5-day itinerary extends Gomayu's shorter Munnar-Alleppey trip with a day in Thekkady, forming what's widely considered the essential Kerala combination: hills, wildlife, and backwaters. It's the most commonly recommended structure for first-time Kerala visitors, since it covers three genuinely different landscapes without feeling rushed at any single stop.

Arriving in Kochi and Munnar

The trip begins at Kochi Airport, with the drive to Munnar passing the Cheeyappara Waterfalls and the Blossom Garden. Day 2 covers Munnar's core sights: Eravikulam National Park, home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr, followed by Mattupetty Dam, Kundala Lake, and the surrounding tea garden scenery, with Echo Point and View Point as additional stops along the way.

Thekkady: Wildlife and Spice

Day 3 shifts to Thekkady, home to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, one of India's most visited tiger reserves, though a wildlife boat cruise on Periyar Lake, included in this itinerary, is the standard way to view the sanctuary's elephants, deer, and birdlife without a guaranteed tiger sighting, since tigers themselves are rarely spotted. For travelers wanting more activity, optional add-ons including a spice plantation tour, bamboo rafting, trekking, and an elephant ride are all available locally at additional cost, giving flexibility without requiring advance booking from Nepal. Thekkady's local spice market, reflecting the region's long history as a spice-trading hub, rounds out the day.

Alleppey: A Night on the Backwaters

Day 4 continues the pattern from Gomayu's shorter Kerala trip, driving to Alleppey for an overnight stay aboard a traditional houseboat, or kettuvallam, cruising through palm-fringed canals and paddy fields with all meals served on board. This closing stretch offers a genuinely different pace after two more activity-driven days in Munnar and Thekkady.

Getting Home

Day 5 closes the trip with breakfast either aboard the houseboat or at a transfer point, followed by the return to Kochi Airport or Railway Station for onward travel.

Best Time to Visit

October through March generally offers Kerala's most comfortable travel conditions across all three regions on this itinerary, with cooler hill-station weather in Munnar, pleasant conditions for the Periyar boat cruise in Thekkady, and calm water for the Alleppey backwater cruise. The monsoon season, roughly June through September, brings heavy rain that can disrupt road travel between destinations, though it also brings a lush, green character some travelers specifically seek out.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Indian Rupee (INR) is the local currency. Given the elevation change into Munnar, a light jacket is worth packing even though the rest of Kerala stays warm and humid. Since Thekkady's wildlife sanctuary is best explored in the early morning or late afternoon when animals are more active, keeping camera equipment and binoculars easily accessible during the boat cruise is worth doing rather than packing them away. As with the shorter Kerala itinerary, confirming dietary preferences ahead of the Alleppey houseboat stay is worth doing given the limited flexibility once meals are prepared on board.
