Shimla and Manali together form one of India's most established hill-station routes, and this 6-day itinerary covers both without rushing either. The trip opens in Manali, spends a day exploring the surrounding valley and a high-altitude tunnel, then follows the scenic Kullu Valley road to Shimla for a second, contrasting stretch built around colonial-era architecture and its own hilltop excursion.

Arrival and the Drive to Manali

The journey begins with arrival at Delhi or Chandigarh, followed by a scenic road journey up into the mountains to Manali. Since this is a full driving day, Day 1 is kept simple, with dinner at the hotel closing out the evening after check-in.

Manali: Temples, Valley, and the Solang Views

Day 2 covers Manali's core sights, starting with the Hadimba Devi Temple, a roughly 450-year-old wooden pagoda-style temple set among cedar forest, and continuing to Manali's Tibetan Monastery and Vashisht village, known for its natural hot sulphur springs. Solang Valley rounds out the day with sweeping views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks; adventure activities like paragliding, zorbing, and the cable car are available on-site but sit outside the package cost, giving travelers the flexibility to add them locally based on interest and weather. The evening is left free for Mall Road, Manali's main commercial and dining strip.

The Atal Tunnel

This excursion is genuinely weather-dependent, and the itinerary notes this directly, since road conditions at this elevation can shift with little notice. The Drive to Shimla

Day 4 covers the transition between the trip's two halves, driving through the Kullu Valley toward Shimla. Arriving in Shimla by afternoon leaves the evening free for an initial stroll along The Mall and The Ridge, Shimla's central pedestrian promenade and open square, both lined with colonial-era buildings.

Shimla and Kufri

Day 5 opens with a morning excursion to Kufri, where a walk through thick cedar woods leads toward views from Mahasu Peak; pony and yak rides are available locally at an additional cost for those wanting to add them. The afternoon covers Shimla's core colonial landmarks: Jakhu Temple, set on the town's highest point, the Vice Regal Lodge, a former British colonial residence, Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in North India, the Gaiety Theatre, and Scandal Point, a well-known meeting spot along The Mall. The evening is left free for shopping along Mall Road.

Getting Home

The final day covers the return drive to Delhi or Chandigarh, with onward travel arrangements handled from there according to each traveler's home journey.

Best Time to Visit

March through June and September through November generally offer the most comfortable travel conditions for this itinerary, with clearer mountain views and manageable road conditions. Winter (December through February) brings heavy snow, which can affect road access to areas like the Atal Tunnel and add both scenic appeal and travel unpredictability, while the monsoon months (July-August) can bring landslide risk on mountain roads.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Indian Rupee (INR) is the local currency. Since this itinerary involves substantial time at altitude, particularly around the Atal Tunnel and Kufri, packing warm layers is worth doing regardless of season, as mountain weather can shift quickly.
