Kedarnath and Badrinath in five days from Haridwar. This is the short version of the Himalayan yatra, and it is the one most Nepali pilgrims ask for. It is also the one where we are most likely to tell you honestly that a longer itinerary would serve you better, and this guide explains why.

Registration is compulsory and free

There is no darshan at either shrine without an Uttarakhand yatra registration. It is issued by the state tourism board, costs nothing, and its number is also required before the official helicopter portal will accept a booking. Counters exist at Haridwar, Rishikesh, Sonprayag and Pandukeshwar, but queueing at Sonprayag at five in the morning is not how you want to start. We register every traveller in your group in advance.

The honest problem with five days

Kedarnath Temple stands at 3,583 metres. Altitude sickness becomes a real risk above 2,500, and at Kedarnath each breath carries roughly a third less oxygen than at sea level. Uttarakhand''s own 2026 advisory asks pilgrims to spend at least 48 hours around Guptkashi altitude before the final ascent.

A five day itinerary gives you one night. That is the trade you are making, and you should make it knowingly. It works for people who are fit, who live at altitude already, or who take the helicopter. It works badly for someone flying in from the plains with a heart condition.

Which brings up the number that matters more than any other on this page. 152 pilgrims died in the first 47 days of the 2026 season, and 246 across 2024. Cardiac arrest, not altitude sickness, is the leading cause, and most of those who died were over 55 with existing heart disease, diabetes or hypertension.

The state now screens everyone over 50 at kiosks at Sitapur, Sonprayag and Gaurikund, and a medical check before you travel is compulsory if you are over 55 or have a cardiac, hypertension, asthma or diabetes history. Get that done in Kathmandu, not at the kiosk. Tell us what the doctor said. And take insurance that covers emergency evacuation, because Nepal''s Swasthya Bima pays nothing across the border and Indian private hospitals want a deposit from foreign nationals up front.

If any of that gives you pause, ask us about the eleven day Char Dham instead. It costs more and takes longer, but it has two acclimatisation nights built into it.

The Kedarnath day

This is the hardest day of the trip and it is worth picturing in advance.

You leave Guptkashi in the dark and drive to Sonprayag. Private vehicles stop there; a government shuttle covers the last 5 kilometres to Gaurikund, and it is compulsory. From Gaurikund the trek is 16 kilometres each way on the trail rebuilt after 2013. You will see 19 or 21 kilometres quoted elsewhere; those are the old route.

You do not have to walk it. Pony, palki and kandi are all available, and they are booked only at the government prepaid counter, never online and never through an agent on the path. The queue at Gaurikund starts around four in the morning. Expect roughly 3,000 to 4,500 rupees for a pony one way and 8,000 to 12,000 for a palki.

Helicopters fly from Phata and Guptkashi. The only official channel is the IRCTC heliyatra portal, everything else is a reseller, and your registration number is needed to book. They are grounded whenever the weather closes in, and after two incidents in June 2025 the rules were tightened. Useful, but never guaranteed.

At the temple: mobile phones are completely banned inside the premises since the 2026 season, not just photography. Photos are allowed from a marked point about 80 metres away, and lockers are available. Dress modestly; it is enforced.

Badrinath

Easier, because you drive to it. The temple sits at 3,133 metres and Tapt Kund, the hot spring below it, is where pilgrims bathe before darshan. Unlike Surya Kund at Yamunotri, this one is meant for bathing.

Season, and the months we will not run

The temples open on Akshaya Tritiya and close around Diwali. In 2026 Kedarnath opened on 22 April and closes 11 November; Badrinath opened 23 April and closes 13 November. The 2027 dates are declared around Maha Shivratri and cannot be published yet.

Note that a late November departure is not possible, whatever a listing tells you, because the shrines are shut.

July and August are the monsoon break. The temples technically remain open but the yatra is repeatedly suspended: landslides closed the routes in July 2025, and in 2026 they were blocked at Patalganga and Tangni with helicopters grounded and the Alaknanda and Mandakini near warning level. This is an operational reality, not a rain disclaimer. We run late April to June and mid September to the first week of November.

Documents and money

Nepali citizens need no visa for India. What you do need is an original document: a Nepalese passport, citizenship certificate or Election Commission voter ID. Photocopies are refused at airline check in. A passport is easiest because the name matches your ticket.

On rupees: notes of 100 and below carry without limit, and notes above 100 up to 25,000 rupees per person in either direction. Refuse a 2000 rupee note in change. It is technically legal tender but shops will not take it and ordinary banks no longer exchange it.

What to pack

Cold, even in June. Mornings at Kedarnath are near freezing and the weather turns fast. Warm layers and a windproof outer, gloves, a cap, broken in shoes with real grip, a walking stick, a torch, a raincoat, and any regular medication in original packaging with a prescription. Carry your own water and some dry food for the trek day; the stalls on the path are basic and crowded.

What we cannot control

Landslides, road closures and weather suspensions are ordinary events on this route, not rare ones. If the authorities close the road or ground the helicopters, no operator can override that. What we do is tell you in writing before you pay how a suspension is handled, and we will not sell you a departure in a month we would not travel in ourselves.

Who this trip suits

Fit pilgrims who want the two main shrines and do not have eleven days. If you are over 55, if you have a heart condition, or if this is your first time above 3,000 metres, talk to us before booking. The longer Char Dham itinerary exists for exactly that reason, and taking the helicopter on the Kedarnath day is the other honest answer.
