Written and checked by the Gomayu travel desk, Kathmandu·About this guide
The Char Dham Yatra is the most demanding: four high shrines above 3,000 metres, long road days and uphill walks to Yamunotri and Kedarnath. The Do Dham Yatra to Kedarnath and Badrinath is shorter. Vaishno Devi involves a long uphill walk from Katra, with pony, palki or helicopter options. The Bali Hindu Pilgrimage Tour has no trekking, only temple steps, and is the gentlest of these journeys.
The Char Dham and Do Dham shrines open in late April or May and close for winter from around Diwali into November. Exact dates are announced each year. Gomayu does not sell Uttarakhand departures in July and August, when monsoon closures are most likely, so May, June, September and October are the usual months. The Himachal and Vaishno Devi tour suits March to June or September to October. In Bali, April to October is drier.
See a doctor in Kathmandu before booking and share the advice with us, especially for heart, blood pressure, asthma or diabetes conditions. Walk daily for a few weeks before departure, pack warm layers and rain gear, and carry enough regular medicines with prescriptions. Ponies, palkis and helicopters reduce walking, but helicopters depend on the weather and cannot be guaranteed, so plan for a slower day.
The Char Dham and Himachal with Vaishno Devi tours start in Delhi, and the Himachal tour ends at Katra. The Do Dham Yatra starts and ends in Haridwar. The Bali tour starts and ends in Denpasar. Travel to the starting point is not part of the package price. Gomayu can book flights or rail for your group, including relatives joining from abroad.
You can offer prayers at every shrine on these routes and join the aarti at the Uttarakhand and Vaishno Devi temples, and we can plan time for the rituals your family wants. Special or VIP darshan tickets, where a temple offers them, are not part of the standard package and depend on availability on the day. Tell us your plans when you enquire so the days are not too rushed.
Bali is the one island in Indonesia where most people are Hindu, and its temples honour Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma in a distinctly Balinese tradition. Pilgrims visit Besakih, the island’s mother temple on the slopes of Mount Agung, the holy springs of Tirta Empul and the clifftop temple at Uluwatu. It suits families who want a pilgrimage without high altitude or long treks.
