Eight days is the length at which Sri Lanka stops being a beach trip and starts being a proper tour of the island. This route strings together the four things the country is actually famous for: the ruined cities of the Cultural Triangle, the Kandyan highlands, a wildlife park with the densest leopard population anywhere, and a warm southwest coast. For Nepali travellers it is a short flight, a free tourist ETA and a week that feels far longer than it is.

The Cultural Triangle

Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle is the plain between Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and it holds the island's oldest ruins. Sigiriya is the centrepiece: a 200-metre column of rock with a fifth-century royal citadel on top, reached through a gateway once shaped like a lion's paws. The climb is roughly 1,200 steps and takes about an hour and a half up and down, past frescoes of court women painted onto a sheltered rock face and a polished "mirror wall" scratched with graffiti a thousand years old. The view from the summit over the surrounding jungle is the reason people come. If you would rather not climb, the water gardens at the base are worth the walk on their own, and Pidurangala rock opposite gives you the classic photograph of Sigiriya itself.

Dambulla, twenty minutes away, is the other essential stop: five caves under an overhanging rock, filled with more than 150 Buddha statues and ceilings painted end to end. It has been a working temple for over two thousand years.

Village life at Hiriwadunna

Between the two sits Hiriwadunna, a farming village that runs short tours for visitors: a bullock cart along field bunds, a catamaran across a small tank, a walk past paddy and vegetable plots. It is touristy but genuinely useful: it shows you the rural Sri Lanka the highway drives past, and for Nepali visitors the farming rhythm feels immediately recognisable.

Kandy and the hill country

Kandy was the last independent Sinhalese kingdom and still feels like a capital in miniature: a lake, a ring of hills, and the Temple of the Tooth, which houses a tooth relic of the Buddha and is the most venerated Buddhist site in the country. Time your visit for the evening puja, when drummers play at the shrine doors. Beyond the temple, Kandy is a good city to simply walk: the market, the handicraft streets, the viewpoint above the lake.

From Kandy the road climbs into tea country. Ramboda Falls, the Hanuman Temple and a working tea factory break up the drive, and the factory tour is worth doing properly, because it ends in a tasting that makes the difference between grades obvious. Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 metres, was built by the British as a hot-weather retreat, and still looks it. Gregory Lake, Victoria Park and the colonial town centre fill an afternoon. Nights here are cold, so bring a jacket.

Yala and the wildlife

Yala National Park, on the southeast coast, has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, along with Asian elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, buffalo, peacocks and hundreds of bird species. Safaris run in 4WD jeeps and are best at dawn or in the late afternoon, when animals move and the light is good. Wear neutral colours, keep your voice down, and bring binoculars if you have them. Sightings are never guaranteed, that is the nature of it, but Yala gives you better odds than almost anywhere else in Asia.

Bentota and the southwest coast

The last stretch is the coast. Bentota sits where the Bentota River meets the sea, which is why it works for both beach days and river trips. The Madu River boat safari winds between mangrove islands and stops at a cinnamon island and a fish-therapy pontoon; turtle hatcheries along the same coast release hatchlings at dusk. Bentota's beach is wide and calm enough for jet skis, banana boats and parasailing, and the Ayurveda spas here are the real thing rather than a hotel add-on.

Best time to visit

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so timing depends on the route. For this one, covering Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Yala and Bentota, the reliable window runs from about November to April, with December to March the driest across the west, south and hill country. May to September brings rain to the southwest but leaves the east coast dry. Yala closes for part of September and October each year for animal welfare, so check dates if wildlife is your priority.

Getting there from Kathmandu

Colombo is roughly three and a half hours direct from Kathmandu, with one-stop options via Delhi or Chennai. Bandaranaike International Airport is about 35 km north of Colombo and around four hours from Sigiriya. Roads are good but the hill sections are slow, so allow more time than a map suggests. This is a route with genuinely long driving days, broken up by stops.

Visa and entry for Nepali citizens

Nepali passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival, applied for online and usually approved quickly. Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived the tourist ETA charge for Nepali citizens along with 39 other nationalities, granting 30 days with double entry. Free of charge does not mean skipping the step. You still need the approved ETA before you fly. Food, money and practical tips

Rice and curry is the national meal, served as a spread of small vegetable dishes around rice; hoppers and kottu roti are the other two things to try. Seafood on the south coast is excellent, and vegetarian food is easy everywhere. The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants, cash for markets, tuk-tuks and village stops. Local SIM cards from Dialog or Mobitel are cheap and available at the airport. At temples, cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never turn your back on a Buddha statue for a photo. Bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent and a light jacket for the hills cover most of it.
