Sri Lanka is one of the easiest first international trips a Nepali traveller can take. It is a short flight from Kathmandu, the food is familiar, English is widely spoken, and since May 2026 the tourist ETA is free for Nepali passport holders. The drive from Kandy into the hills is the part most travellers remember. The road climbs through tea estates, past Ramboda Waterfall and the Hanuman Temple, with pickers working the slopes in the middle distance. Nuwara Eliya itself sits at about 1,900 metres and was built by the British as a hill retreat, which is why it is nicknamed "Little England": mock-Tudor houses, a racecourse, a golf course and the botanical garden at Hakgala. Gregory Lake is the town's centrepiece, Victoria Park is good for birdlife, and Seetha Amman Temple is tied to the Ramayana, which makes it a meaningful stop for many Nepali visitors. Mornings and nights here are genuinely cold, so pack a jacket.

Tea, and why it matters here

Ceylon tea is the reason the hill country looks the way it does. A factory visit walks you through withering, rolling, oxidising and drying, and ends with a tasting where the difference between a high-grown and a low-grown leaf finally becomes obvious. It is also the best thing you can carry home, because proper single-estate tea is a fraction of what it costs abroad.

Bentota, Galle and the southwest coast

Coming down from the hills to Bentota is a change of both climate and pace. Bentota is a wide, calm beach town at the mouth of the Bentota River, which makes it good for sea and river activities alike: jet skiing, banana boats, parasailing, and quieter mangrove safaris. Galle, an hour further south, is a walled Dutch colonial port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the fort ramparts at sunset are the classic photograph. Between the two, a Madu River boat safari winds between mangrove islands, and turtle hatcheries along the coast release hatchlings at dusk.

Best time to visit

Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so the best time depends on where you are going. Getting there from Kathmandu

Roads are good but winding in the hills, so map distances are misleading; a hundred kilometres can easily take three hours.

Visa and entry for Nepali citizens

Nepali passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization before arriving. It is applied for online and approved quickly, and since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived the tourist ETA charge for Nepali citizens along with 39 other nationalities, granting a 30-day stay with double entry. Free of charge does not mean skipping the step. You still need the approved ETA before you fly. Food you should try

Rice and curry is the national meal and arrives as a spread of small dishes, dhal, jackfruit, beetroot and coconut sambol, around a plate of rice. Hoppers, the bowl-shaped fermented pancakes, are a breakfast staple, and an egg hopper is worth trying at least once. Kottu roti, chopped flatbread stir-fried on a griddle, is the sound of every Sri Lankan evening street. Seafood on the south coast is excellent. Vegetarian travellers are well served everywhere, since the cuisine is naturally coconut and vegetable heavy.

Money, culture and practical tips

The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee. Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but carry cash for markets, tea estates, tuk-tuks and village shops. At temples, cover your shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and never turn your back on a Buddha statue for a photograph. Drink bottled water, use mosquito repellent in the evening, carry sunscreen for the coast and a light jacket for the hills. Power sockets are usually three-pin, so bring an adapter.
