Phu Quoc is Vietnam''s largest island, sitting off the southwest coast much closer to Cambodia than to Ho Chi Minh City. Five days here is a beach holiday with two good excursion days built in. Most of what follows is about season and paperwork, because those are the two things that actually go wrong.

Come in the dry season, and know which half that is

This matters more on Phu Quoc than almost anywhere else in Vietnam, and it is the single most common mistake made about the island.

Phu Quoc''s dry season runs November to April, and December to March is the best of it. The wet season is May to October, when rainfall runs to something like four hundred millimetres a month, humidity sits at eighty five to ninety percent, and the sea gets rough enough that boat trips are regularly cancelled. If you have read that April to October is the season here, that is the wrong half of the year.

This has a direct consequence for the itinerary. The island boat day is the highlight of the trip and it is entirely weather dependent. In the dry months it runs almost every day. In the wet months captains substitute islands or cancel outright, and no operator can override that.

One date to plan around: Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, is on 6 February 2027 with the holiday running roughly the 3rd to the 11th. Phu Quoc fills with domestic holidaymakers, prices rise sharply and flights sell out for a week either side.

The visa trap that is specific to this island

Phu Quoc has a thirty day visa exemption, and it is widely misunderstood.

The exemption only applies if you arrive on the island directly from abroad, or transit a Vietnamese international airport without clearing immigration. If you land in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, clear immigration, and then take a domestic flight down to Phu Quoc, you are not covered, and you cannot use the exemption to travel back to the mainland either. People are refused boarding over this.

Because almost every routing from Kathmandu connects through a Vietnamese city, the safe assumption for this trip is that you need a normal e-visa. Vietnam opened its e-visa to all nationalities in August 2023, so Nepali travellers apply online for up to ninety days at USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple, with about three working days'' official processing. Apply only through the Vietnam Immigration Department portal on the .gov.vn domain; the copycat sites charge two to four times as much and collect your passport data. We handle it for you and we will confirm in writing which basis you are travelling on.

Separately, a Vietnam Digital Arrival Card became mandatory at Phu Quoc airport from 1 June 2026, filed online in the seventy two hours before departure. That is a second form, not an alternative to the visa.

Getting here

There is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Vietnam. Everything connects, usually through Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and then again onto Phu Quoc. Some cheap fares route through mainland China; whether that needs a Chinese transit visa for a Nepali passport depends on the exact airport and routing, so let us check it before you commit to a fare.

The cable car, and the phrase to use for it

The Hon Thom cable car is genuinely remarkable and it holds a genuine record, but it is often described wrongly. It is 7,899 metres long and holds the Guinness record for the longest three wire cable car crossing the sea. It is not simply "the world''s longest cable car", which is a different and contested claim.

Practical notes: it usually runs from around nine in the morning to five in the afternoon with a midday pause, hours shift by season, and it closes in high wind. We confirm the running times for your dates rather than assuming.

The boat day

Boats leave from An Thoi harbour at the southern tip and work through the An Thoi archipelago, commonly Hon Thom, Hon Gam Ghi, Hon May Rut and Hon Mong Tay. Some operators now sell it as three islands plus the cable car rather than four.

The snorkelling is good in the dry season and the water is clear. It is genuinely weather dependent, so if the sea is up the captain will change the route or the day will move. We would rather tell you that now than on the morning.

Vinpearl Safari and VinWonders

Both are open and both are large. The safari is Vietnam''s first zoo certified by the Southeast Asian Zoos Association and holds around four thousand animals. Doing the two together is a long day on foot in the heat, so plan a slow start and carry water.

One thing worth saying plainly rather than glossing over: the safari attracts periodic visitor criticism about animal conditions. There has been no sanction or closure, and plenty of visitors enjoy it, but we are not going to write copy about world class animal welfare that a review can contradict. If that would bother you, tell us and we will swap the day for beach time or the north of the island.

Money on an island

Vietnam uses the dong at roughly twenty four to twenty five thousand to the US dollar. Resorts and larger restaurants take cards, often with a three to four percent surcharge, but the night market, the pepper and pearl farms, taxis and small seafood places want cash.

Plan your withdrawals. ATM fees run twenty two to fifty five thousand dong per transaction and machines cap out at around two to five million dong, and island ATMs sit at the lower end of that. Take the maximum each time. US dollars are not a fallback; a few tourist businesses accept them, most do not.

Getting around, and the motorbike question

Grab and Xanh SM both operate on the island and are the honest way to move about, with the fare fixed in the app before you get in. Metered street taxis on Phu Quoc have a poor reputation for rigged meters and detours.

You will be offered a scooter everywhere, and it is tempting on an island. Do not. Vietnam recognises only the 1968 Vienna Convention international driving permit, and Nepal is not a party to that convention, so a Nepali licence and IDP are not valid here. Riding anyway is illegal, and more importantly it voids your travel and medical insurance in a crash regardless of fault. The island''s roads are fast, sandy at the edges and busy with tourists on bikes they cannot handle.

Water, mosquitoes and drones

Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Vietnam, and ice at small stalls is sometimes made from it. Stick to sealed bottles. Dengue is endemic year round, worst in the south, and the mosquito bites in the daytime, so use repellent through the day rather than only at dusk.

Leave the drone behind. Flying one legally needs Ministry of Defence approval applied for at least fourteen days ahead, and unauthorised aerial filming carries fines in the millions of dong. Phu Quoc is exactly the sort of place people expect to fly one, which is why it is worth saying.

Who this trip suits

Anyone who wants a proper beach week with two structured days rather than seven empty ones, and couples or families who would rather not move hotels. It pairs naturally with Ho Chi Minh City if you want some history alongside the sand, and we can join the two into one trip.
