This is the Vietnam trip built around what actually works with children, which is a different question from what looks best in a brochure. A day cruise instead of a night on a boat. A theme park and safari in the middle to break up the sightseeing. A beach. And the two heaviest cultural days at the end, once everyone has found their feet.

When to go

This route covers the north and the south but skips central Vietnam, which is the region with the awkward calendar. That makes the window wider than on our other multi region trips.

The north, Hanoi and Ha Long, is good October to April, with July to September its typhoon season. The south, Phu Quoc and Ho Chi Minh City, is dry November to April and wet May to October. Put together, November to April works, and December to March is the best of it.

One date to plan around. Tet, the Vietnamese New Year, is 6 February 2027, with the holiday running roughly the 3rd to the 11th. Most local restaurants and shops close for the core days, some museums shut for the first three, and domestic flights, which this trip uses twice, sell out for a week either side. With children, a closed city is a harder problem than it is for adults, so tell us your dates early.

The visa, and the Phu Quoc trap

Vietnam opened its e-visa to all nationalities in August 2023. Nepali travellers apply online for up to ninety days, single or multiple entry, at USD 25 or USD 50. Officially about three working days; allow five to seven. Every traveller needs their own, children included, with a passport valid six months and two blank pages.

Use only the Vietnam Immigration Department portal on the .gov.vn domain. Copycat sites charge two to four times the fee for the identical visa and harvest passport and card data. The government portal takes bank transfer and never asks for card numbers, which is the quickest way to tell them apart.

Now the trap. You will read that Phu Quoc has a thirty day visa exemption, and it does not apply to this itinerary. It only covers people arriving on the island directly from abroad, or transiting a Vietnamese airport without clearing immigration. This trip lands in Hanoi, clears immigration, and flies to Phu Quoc domestically, so everyone needs a normal e-visa. It also cannot be used to fly onward to Ho Chi Minh City. Families do get refused boarding over this.

Two arrival cards also apply now. The Vietnam Digital Arrival Card became mandatory at Phu Quoc from 1 June 2026 and at Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City from 15 April 2026, filed online in the seventy two hours before travel. Both are separate from the visa and both are free.

Getting there with children

There is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Vietnam, so every routing connects, usually through Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Door to door is around eighteen hours, which is a long first day with small children. Some cheap fares route through mainland China, and whether a Nepali passport can transit without a Chinese visa depends on the exact airport. Ask us to check rather than booking on price.

Why a day cruise and not an overnight

Most Ha Long itineraries put you on a boat for the night. We do not on this one, deliberately. A cabin with young children, in the dark, on the water, is a harder night than the photographs suggest, and the day cruise sees the same bay.

You should also know about the Wonder Sea, which capsized in Ha Long Bay on 19 July 2025 in a sudden squall, killing thirty nine people. Investigators pointed at how fast the storm arrived and at weather warnings not reaching vessels. The authorities have since tightened weather triggered suspensions, vessel monitoring and safety equipment rules. Practically: the maritime authority suspends sailings in high wind and decides on the morning, and if that happens we run a land day instead and confirm in writing how it is handled. Life jackets are provided and are not optional for children.

The Ha Long day is long, about three hours each way from Hanoi. It is the one day where a very young child may struggle, and we can drop it if you would rather.

The Cu Chi day, and what to tell children first

This tour uses Ben Dinh, about ninety minutes from Ho Chi Minh City, where sections of tunnel have been widened for visitors. Ben Duoc is the narrower, more authentic site and is not the right choice with a family.

Two things worth preparing for. The crawl is dark and tight even in the widened sections, and it is entirely optional, with exit points every few metres. Children from around seven or eight usually enjoy it; younger ones often do not, and there is no need to push. Second, and this surprises people: a live firing range operates on the site and the gunfire carries across the whole complex. It is not part of the tour and you do not have to go near it, but you will hear it all afternoon. Bring earplugs for noise sensitive children, and mention it before you arrive rather than after the first shot.

The Mekong day, honestly

The delta trip to My Tho and Ben Tre is a full day, about nine hours door to door, and a good part of that is sitting in a vehicle. The sampan through the coconut canals is genuinely lovely and children usually love it. The coconut candy workshop and fruit tasting are more commercial, and some travellers find them staged, which is a fair comment. We would rather you knew in advance. If nine hours sounds like too much, say so and we will look at a shorter alternative.

Phu Quoc, the middle of the trip

The safari and theme park day is the one children remember, and it is a lot of walking in heat, so plan a slow start and carry water. One honest note: the safari attracts periodic visitor criticism about animal conditions. There has been no sanction or closure and many families enjoy it, but we are not going to make welfare claims a review can contradict. If it would bother you, we will swap the day for the beach or the north of the island.

The island boat day is weather dependent. Snorkelling suits confident swimmers; there is beach time for everyone else, and no child needs to snorkel to enjoy the day.

Health, water and safety with children

Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Vietnam, including in hotels, and street stall ice is sometimes made from it. Sealed bottles only, and use bottled water for brushing teeth with small children who swallow.

Dengue is endemic year round and worst in the south. The mosquito that carries it bites during the day, which is the part parents usually get wrong. Repellent in the morning as well as the evening, and long sleeves at dawn and dusk.

Crossing the road in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is the daily hazard, not anything exotic. The traffic does not stop. Hold hands, walk slowly and predictably, and let the bikes flow around you. Never stop suddenly or turn back mid crossing.

Money and getting about

The dong runs at roughly twenty four to twenty five thousand to the US dollar, so count the zeros. Cards work at hotels and larger restaurants with a three to four percent surcharge typically; markets, street food and small places are cash. ATM fees are twenty two to fifty five thousand dong per withdrawal with caps around two to five million, so draw the maximum each time. US dollars are not generally accepted.

Use Grab, Xanh SM or Be for transport, where the fare is agreed in the app and you can request a larger vehicle for a family. And do not rent a motorbike: Vietnam recognises only the 1968 Vienna Convention permit and Nepal is not a party to it, so a Nepali licence and IDP are not valid, and riding voids your insurance in a crash regardless of fault. With children in the group that is not a risk worth taking at all.

Who this trip suits

Families with children roughly six and up, who want a real trip rather than a resort, and who are happy with two internal flights. The pace is deliberately uneven: heavy days are followed by light ones. If your children are younger, tell us and we will shorten the Ha Long and Mekong days, which are the two that stretch them.
