A Full Introduction to North Vietnam

This 8-day itinerary covers the three destinations most closely associated with North Vietnam travel: Hanoi's history and street life, Sapa's mountain scenery and hill-tribe villages, and Ha Long Bay's limestone karst seascape. Moving through all three in sequence gives a genuinely varied trip, shifting from Hanoi's dense urban energy to Sapa's cool mountain air and finally to a night spent afloat among Ha Long Bay's islands.

Arrival and Hanoi's Old Quarter

The journey connects through Bangkok before arriving at Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). With Day 1 left unscheduled given the length of the journey, travelers can settle into the Old Quarter at their own pace, with Hoan Kiem Lake and the historic 36 Streets both within walking distance of most hotels.

Day 2 covers Hanoi's key landmarks: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, the resting place of Vietnam's founding leader, alongside the nearby One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university. The walk continues to Train Street, a narrow residential lane where the railway runs directly between houses close enough that cafes along the track clear their tables as trains pass. The day closes with a traditional water puppet show, a centuries-old art form native to the Red River Delta, and egg coffee, a Hanoi specialty, at a café near Hoan Kiem Lake.

Sapa: Mountains and H'Mong Villages

Day 3 heads northwest into the Hoang Lien Son range, with the journey to Sapa available by overnight train or by road depending on what's confirmed at the time of booking. Sapa town sits at a significantly higher elevation than Hanoi, with noticeably cooler air and cloud that often settles in the valley below. Cat Cat Village, a short walk from town, is home to the H'Mong ethnic community and known for its waterfalls, traditional indigo fabric dyeing, and stilted wooden houses.

Day 4 is built around Fansipan, the highest peak in Indochina at 3,143 metres, reached by cable car rather than the multi-day trek the mountain once required. Ban May Cultural Village, located at the summit station, presents the traditions of the H'Mong, Dao, and Tay ethnic groups native to the region. The afternoon at Sapa's market gives a closer look at the same communities' textiles and produce before a free evening in town.

Back to Hanoi and Onward to Ha Long Bay

Day 5 retraces the route back to Hanoi through terraced valleys and roadside tea stalls, with the rest of the day left free for Dong Xuan Market or the Old Quarter's well-known beer corner.

Day 6 shifts entirely to the coast, with a drive out to board a traditional junk boat for an overnight cruise through Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its thousands of limestone karst islands rising from emerald water. The day includes kayaking into a hidden lagoon, a stop at a limestone cave, and a seafood dinner served on deck as the boat settles among the islands for the night. Morning Tai Chi on the sundeck, offered as the sun rises over the bay, is a common feature of these overnight cruises and a quiet start to Day 7's return journey.

Getting Home

Day 7 covers the cruise's return through the islands and the transfer back to Hanoi, with the final full day left free for last-minute shopping in the Old Quarter before departure on Day 8 through Noi Bai International Airport.

Best Time to Visit

September through November and March through April generally offer the most comfortable conditions across all three regions on this itinerary. Sapa can turn cold, occasionally near freezing, in the winter months of December through February, while North Vietnam's summer (May through August) brings heat and higher humidity to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the local currency, with exchange facilities available in Hanoi. Since Sapa sits at a much higher elevation than Hanoi and the coast, packing warmer layers for Days 3 and 4 is worth doing regardless of season. Comfortable walking shoes matter throughout, particularly for the Cat Cat Village walk and Hanoi's Old Quarter, and a light rain jacket is useful year-round given North Vietnam's variable mountain weather.
