A Full Introduction to North Vietnam
This 8-day itinerary covers the three destinations most closely associated with North Vietnam travel: Hanoi's history and street life, Sapa's mountain scenery and hill-tribe villages, and Ha Long Bay's limestone karst seascape. Moving through all three in sequence gives a genuinely varied trip, shifting from Hanoi's dense urban energy to Sapa's cool mountain air and finally to a night spent afloat among Ha Long Bay's islands.
Arrival and Hanoi's Old Quarter
The journey connects through Bangkok before arriving at Noi Bai International Airport (HAN). With Day 1 left unscheduled given the length of the journey, travelers can settle into the Old Quarter at their own pace, with Hoan Kiem Lake and the historic 36 Streets both within walking distance of most hotels.
Day 2 covers Hanoi's key landmarks: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex, the resting place of Vietnam's founding leader, alongside the nearby One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first national university. The walk continues to Train Street, a narrow residential lane where the railway runs directly between houses close enough that cafes along the track clear their tables as trains pass. The day closes with a traditional water puppet show, a centuries-old art form native to the Red River Delta, and egg coffee, a Hanoi specialty, at a cafƩ near Hoan Kiem Lake.

Best Time to Visit
September through November and March through April generally offer the most comfortable conditions across all three regions on this itinerary. Sapa can turn cold, occasionally near freezing, in the winter months of December through February, while North Vietnam's summer (May through August) brings heat and higher humidity to Hanoi and Ha Long Bay.
Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers
Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the local currency, with exchange facilities available in Hanoi. Since Sapa sits at a much higher elevation than Hanoi and the coast, packing warmer layers for Days 3 and 4 is worth doing regardless of season. Comfortable walking shoes matter throughout, particularly for the Cat Cat Village walk and Hanoi's Old Quarter, and a light rain jacket is useful year-round given North Vietnam's variable mountain weather.
