Chengdu offers a genuinely different kind of China trip compared to Beijing's imperial history or Shanghai's modern skyline. It's built around a slower pace, well-known teahouse culture, and, most of all, direct access to giant pandas in a setting designed around their care and breeding. This 5-day itinerary keeps the pace unhurried, with only one major activity most days, matching Chengdu's reputation as one of China's more laid-back major cities.

Arriving in Chengdu

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport serves as the arrival and departure point. Staying near Chunxi Road or Jinli puts travelers close to Jinli Ancient Street, a reconstructed traditional street lined with snack stalls and teahouses, an easy and low-effort way to spend a first evening after travel.

The Giant Panda Breeding Research Base

Day 2 is built around Chengdu's signature attraction. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is timed for an opening-hour arrival specifically because pandas are most active and visibly feeding in the morning, before the midday heat typically sends them into a quieter, more inactive state. The visit covers both the adult enclosures and the nursery area where cubs are kept, giving a fuller picture of the base's breeding program beyond a single enclosure visit. The afternoon shifts to People's Park, a genuinely local spot where Chengdu's teahouse culture is on full display, including the city's well-known ear-cleaning chairs, a traditional (and optional) service offered tableside.

The Leshan Giant Buddha

Day 3 heads south to Leshan, home to a 71-metre Buddha carved directly into a river cliff face, the tallest stone Buddha statue in the world. The boat ride offers the clearest full-frontal view of the statue's scale, impossible to fully appreciate from land, while the stairway descent alongside the carving gives a closer, more detailed look on the way down. The evening returns to Chengdu for a Sichuan hotpot dinner, one of the region's signature culinary experiences, with an optional face-changing opera performance, a distinctive Sichuan theatrical art form, available for those wanting to extend the evening.

A Choice for Day 4

Day 4 offers two distinct options rather than a fixed itinerary. Mount Emei, one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains, offers monasteries scattered across a forested peak, reachable partly by cable car for those not wanting a full trekking day. Alternatively, Dujiangyan showcases a 2,000-year-old irrigation system still in use today, recognized as one of the oldest functioning water management projects in the world, paired with Qingcheng Mountain, considered the birthplace of Taoism. The choice lets travelers lean toward Buddhist history and mountain scenery or toward engineering history and Taoist tradition, depending on interest.

Departure

The final morning is left free for Kuanzhai Alley, a set of three historic lanes turned into one of Chengdu's most popular shopping and dining areas, before the transfer to the airport.

Best Time to Visit

September through November and March through May offer Chengdu's most comfortable weather, avoiding the region's hot, humid summers and its damp, overcast winters. Chengdu is known for frequent cloud cover year-round, so clear-sky days aren't guaranteed regardless of season, though the shoulder months remain the most reliable choice.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the local currency, and mobile payment apps are widely used, though cash is still useful for smaller vendors. Sichuan cuisine is known for its heavy use of chili and Sichuan peppercorn, so travelers sensitive to spice may want to request milder options when ordering, particularly for the Day 3 hotpot dinner. Comfortable walking shoes matter throughout, and those choosing the Mount Emei option on Day 4 should be prepared for a longer day involving cable car queues and uneven mountain terrain.
