A Focused, Single-City Beijing Trip

Most of Gomayu's existing China packages combine Beijing with Shanghai, Xi'an, or a wider multi-city route. This itinerary takes a different approach, staying entirely within Beijing for the full 5 days and going deeper into the capital's core sites rather than moving quickly between cities. It suits travelers who'd rather spend more time at fewer places, or who are treating this as a standalone trip rather than the opening leg of a longer China journey.

Arriving in Beijing

Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) serves as the arrival and departure point. Staying near Wangfujing or Qianmen puts travelers within walking distance of two of Beijing's most recognizable streets: Wangfujing's food street and the lit-up Qianmen gate, both accessible on Day 1 without needing any organized activity, giving arriving travelers an easy first evening.

The Forbidden City and Jingshan Park

Day 2 covers Beijing's most significant imperial site. The Forbidden City, entered through the Meridian Gate at Tiananmen Square, served as the seat of the Ming and Qing emperors for nearly 500 years, and walking its full central axis takes visitors through the palace complex's most important ceremonial halls. Jingshan Park, directly behind the complex, offers an elevated view back over the Forbidden City's golden rooftops, best timed for sunset as this itinerary schedules, when the low light catches the palace roofs particularly well.

The Great Wall at Mutianyu

Day 3 is dedicated to the Great Wall, with this itinerary specifically choosing Mutianyu over the more commonly visited Badaling section. Mutianyu has been similarly well restored but sees considerably fewer visitors, making for a quieter and less rushed walk along the ridge between watchtowers. The cable car up and the toboggan ride back down add a memorable, slightly playful element to what is otherwise a history-heavy day, and the toboggan in particular tends to be a highlight for travelers of all ages.

Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, and the Hutongs

Day 4 opens at the Temple of Heaven, a Ming-dynasty religious complex where locals still gather each morning to practice tai chi and calligraphy, giving the site a lived-in feel beyond its historical significance. The day continues to the Summer Palace, the former imperial garden retreat, where the Long Corridor, one of the longest covered walkways in the world, and Kunming Lake offer a different pace and setting from the Forbidden City's formal halls. The day closes with a rickshaw ride through the Shichahai hutongs, Beijing's traditional narrow alleyways, ending with tea in a local courtyard, a fitting, slower close to the trip's most sightseeing-heavy day.

Departure

The final morning is left free for Panjiayuan, one of Beijing's largest antique and flea markets, or last-minute shopping, before the transfer to the airport.

Best Time to Visit

September through November and April through May generally offer Beijing's most comfortable weather, avoiding both the cold, dry winters common in northern China and the hot, humid summer months. Layered clothing is worth packing regardless of season, since Beijing's weather can shift noticeably between morning and evening.

Practical Notes for Nepali Travelers

Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the local currency, and mobile payment apps are widely used across Beijing, though carrying some cash is still useful for smaller vendors and markets. English is not widely spoken outside major tourist areas and international hotels, so having key addresses written in Chinese characters (something a guide or hotel can help arrange) makes independent free time, like the Day 1 evening or Day 5 morning, considerably easier to navigate. Comfortable walking shoes matter throughout, particularly for the extensive walking involved at the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, and Mutianyu.
