Why Manila

Manila offers a different flavor of Southeast Asian city trip compared to your Thailand, Vietnam, or Malaysia pages, shaped heavily by nearly 400 years of Spanish colonial rule followed by American administration in the early 20th century. This 5 day itinerary balances that layered history with modern shopping districts and a scenic countryside day trip to Tagaytay, giving a well rounded first introduction to the Philippine capital.

Intramuros: The Walled City

Intramuros, meaning "within the walls" in Spanish, was the fortified seat of Spanish colonial government in the Philippines, built starting in the 1570s. Much of the district was destroyed during the Battle of Manila in 1945 and later restored, though sections of the original stone walls and several historic buildings survive. San Agustin Church, completed in 1607, sits within Intramuros and holds the distinction of being the oldest stone church in the Philippines, having survived several earthquakes and the wartime destruction that leveled much of the surrounding district. It's part of the Baroque Churches of the Philippines UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 1993 alongside three other churches around the country.

Rizal Park and Binondo

Rizal Park, a large open green space near Intramuros, is named for José Rizal, the Filipino writer and nationalist executed by Spanish colonial authorities in 1896 for his role in the independence movement, an event that helped galvanize the eventual revolution. Nearby, Binondo, established in 1594, is considered the world's oldest Chinatown, still active today with its mix of temples, gold shops, and some of Manila's most well known Chinese-Filipino food.

Tagaytay and Taal Volcano

Tagaytay sits on a ridge overlooking Taal Lake, roughly an hour to 90 minutes south of Manila depending on traffic, and is popular largely for its cooler climate and sweeping views. Taal Volcano, rising from an island within the lake, is often described as the world's smallest active volcano, an informal but widely repeated claim, and remains genuinely active, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology closely monitoring it given past eruptions, including a significant one in 2020. Boat trips out to the volcano island itself are sometimes restricted depending on current activity levels, so viewing from Tagaytay Ridge or Picnic Grove, a hillside park known for its lookout points and local snacks, is the standard way to experience it on a day trip like this one.

Manila American Cemetery

The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, is the largest U.S. military cemetery from World War II by number of graves, honoring American and Filipino service members who died during the Pacific campaign. Its scale, rows of white marble crosses across a sweeping lawn, makes it a striking and reflective stop, quite different in tone from the rest of the itinerary.

Modern Manila: BGC, Makati, and Shopping

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) and Makati represent Manila's modern side, both built up over recent decades into major business and lifestyle districts with high-rise towers, international dining, and large shopping malls. Greenbelt in Makati and SM Mall of Asia, one of the largest malls in Southeast Asia, both offer extensive shopping and dining options, giving the trip's final full day a more relaxed, leisure-focused close after several history-heavy days.

Philippines Visa for Nepali Citizens

Visa requirements for the Philippines can vary by nationality and should be confirmed directly ahead of booking, since rules and eligible entry methods do change. Nepali passport holders should check current requirements, including whether a visa on arrival, e-visa, or advance application applies, well ahead of the trip. Currency and Practical Notes

The Philippines' currency is the Philippine Peso. Cards are widely accepted at hotels, malls, and larger restaurants in Manila, though cash remains useful for smaller vendors, tricycles, and at Tagaytay's roadside stalls.

Good to Know

Manila's traffic can be heavy, particularly between districts during peak hours, so travel times between stops on this itinerary can vary more than in some other Southeast Asian cities. Building in some flexibility, especially around the Tagaytay day trip, is worth doing given the drive involved both ways.
