Seven days is enough to stop rushing Bali. This route keeps the south, Ubud and one island day, and leaves two days with nothing scheduled, which is usually the part people talk about afterwards. What follows is what matters before you book: when to come, what to arrange in advance, and where the honest caveats sit.

What the seven days cover

Two halves. The south holds the beaches, the cliff temples and almost every hotel, so Tanjung Benoa, Uluwatu and Jimbaran sit within a short drive of each other. Ubud is inland and greener, about ninety minutes up through the rice country. Mid week comes Nusa Penida, an island across a strait that is spectacular and rough in equal measure, done here as a day trip rather than an overnight.

When to go

The dry season runs May to October, the wet season November to April, which is the Indonesian meteorological agency's split. July to September is driest and January the wettest month. Wet season rain usually comes as a heavy afternoon burst rather than all day drizzle, so the island stays workable.

The sea matters more than the rain on this route, because the Nusa Penida crossing is built into it. Crossings are suspended by the Sanur port authority when swell is dangerous, and that is a routine event rather than a rare one. A fast boat capsized on approach to Sanur in August 2025 with fatalities, in the middle of the dry season. December to March is the worst window for it. Do not schedule the island day immediately before your flight home.

One date to check before booking anything in March: Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence, falls on 8 March 2027. The island stops for twenty four hours and Ngurah Rai airport closes completely, six in the morning to six the next.

Before you fly: visa, arrival form and two entry charges

Nepali passport holders cannot use Indonesia's visa on arrival, because Nepal is not on that list. You apply in advance for a single entry visit visa for tourism at the official portal, evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The passport must be valid more than six months beyond arrival, and the application asks for a photograph, a return ticket, accommodation details and evidence of sufficient funds. Approval comes by email as a PDF. Gomayu handles this for you.

Since 1 September 2025 every international arrival also completes one digital declaration on the All Indonesia platform, which replaced the separate arrival card, customs form and health form. Free, submitted up to seventy two hours before landing, and doing it early is what lets you use the automatic gates.

Then two charges, both separate from the visa and from each other. The Bali Tourist Levy is a provincial charge on every foreign visitor including children, paid before arrival at lovebali.baliprov.go.id or through the Love Bali app; only the .go.id address is official, and spot checks at attractions have tightened through 2026. Separately, the Nusa Penida entry ticket is now cashless and online only, with no counters left on the island, so it has to be bought before you board the boat. We arrange that one as part of the day.

The Nusa Penida day, honestly

This is the hardest day of the week and it is worth knowing that in advance rather than discovering it at six in the morning.

The first boats leave Sanur around 06:30 and the last return is about 17:00, so the day runs twelve to fourteen hours door to door. Of the seven or so hours on the island, two to three are spent in a car, because the roads are narrow, steep and broken in places. A drive that looks like fifteen minutes on a map takes thirty to forty five. Four sites is the maximum a day trip holds, roughly half an hour at each.

It is still worth doing, because the scenery genuinely is what the photographs show. Go in expecting a long day, take the earliest boat, and treat a weather cancellation as normal rather than a disaster. If you want it gentler, we can cut it to two sites with a longer stop at Crystal Bay, or move you to the version that stays overnight on the island.

The viewpoints are viewpoints, not beaches

Cheap listings get this wrong and it has killed people.

Angel's Billabong looks like a natural infinity pool. Swimming there has been banned by local authorities since a fatal accident in February 2023, and at least four people have drowned. Sets surge over the rock lip without warning and there is no way back once you are swept out. Photograph it from behind the lip and go no further.

Kelingking is a cliff viewpoint. The descent to the sand is a near vertical four hundred metre scramble on a bamboo railed staircase, and most deaths there have come from waves at the bottom rather than from falls. There is no lifeguard. The viewpoint is the attraction. You may also have seen a glass lift in videos: it has never operated, construction was halted and a demolition order issued, so do not plan around it. Broken Beach is a clifftop loop with no safe way down. Crystal Bay is the one place on this day where you actually swim, and even there stay inside the bay, because the channel out towards the rock islet carries very strong currents.

Uluwatu and the Kecak dance

The Kecak fire dance runs in two sessions, around 18:00 and 19:00, in an open air amphitheatre on the cliff inside the temple complex but outside the inner sacred courtyard. It is ticketed separately from temple entry and it sells out in peak season, so it is booked ahead rather than bought at the gate. Sarong and sash are required for the temple and handed out free at the entrance.

The macaques at Uluwatu are not a photo opportunity. They take phones, glasses and anything shiny, several a day, and hold them for a food ransom. Hand loose items to your guide before you walk in. Rabies cases have also risen through 2025 and 2026, so do not touch monkeys or stray dogs, and treat any bite or scratch as needing immediate medical attention.

Water sports, swings and spas: choosing safely

Tanjung Benoa is Bali's designated marine tourism area and the standard place for jet ski, parasailing and banana boat. Licensed operators carry activity insurance, though the cover is thin, so do not treat it as a substitute for your own travel policy. Weather cancellations on the wind sensitive rides are normal.

On the swing, use a named operator and insist on a full body harness with chest and leg straps rather than a lap belt. There is no dedicated regulator for swing attractions in Bali, and standards between the branded sites and the roadside copies are not comparable.

For the spa, book a licensed one. And one firm rule: never accept injections, fillers or IV drips at a spa. Those are medical procedures, they are illegal under a spa licence, and Bali has been closing unlicensed operators through the 2026 tourism licensing crackdown.

The glass blowing workshop on the Ubud day is worth naming for what it is: a genuine demonstration attached to a showroom, and it appears on itineraries because of the showroom. Watch the glass blowing, enjoy it, and feel no obligation to buy anything.

Jimbaran seafood, and the bill

The grilled seafood on the sand at Jimbaran is a real and long standing Bali experience. The trap is how it is priced. Seafood is sold by weight, often quoted per hundred grams, which makes the number look far smaller than the eventual bill, and tax and service are usually added on top.

Three things prevent a bad evening. Ask for the written price list before you order anything. Have the fish weighed in front of you. And agree the total in rupiah, in writing, before it goes on the grill. Choose a busy stall with high turnover and make sure everything is cooked through.

Money, connectivity and practical basics

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah. Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but carry cash for markets, small warungs, temple donations and everything on Nusa Penida. Decline every offer to be billed in your home currency, and change money only at licensed counters displaying a Bank Indonesia licence number. Indonesia's cross border QR payment scheme does not include Nepal, so a wallet app from home will not work here.

Buy a tourist SIM or eSIM on arrival; passport registration is mandatory and SIMs are sold inactive until that check clears. Telkomsel has clearly the best coverage on Nusa Penida. Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Bali, though ice in established restaurants is commercially made and fine.

Who this trip suits

Couples, families and groups who want a bit of everything and are happy to trade one hard day for the island scenery. The two free days are what make seven work rather than six: after Nusa Penida you will want them.
