Ladakh offers a genuinely different kind of Indian landscape: a high-altitude desert ringed by snow-capped peaks, with stark, dramatic terrain unlike anywhere else in Gomayu's catalog. This 5-day itinerary is based entirely in Leh, using it as a hub for excursions to two of the region's most significant landmarks, Pangong Lake and Khardung La, while building in a genuine acclimatisation day given how quickly the altitude climbs across the trip.

Arriving in Leh and Acclimatising

Leh sits at roughly 3,500 metres, high enough that altitude adjustment genuinely matters before any strenuous activity. Day 1 is left deliberately unscheduled beyond arrival and check-in, giving the body time to begin adjusting before Day 2's sightseeing and the higher-altitude excursions that follow later in the trip. This isn't a formality; skipping this adjustment period is one of the more common mistakes first-time Ladakh visitors make.

Leh City Sightseeing

Day 2 covers several of Leh's well-known sites. Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, built to commemorate a site associated with Guru Nanak, sits along the Leh-Kargil highway, not far from Magnetic Hill, known for an optical illusion that makes vehicles appear to roll uphill against gravity. The Hall of Fame, a museum and memorial run by the Indian Army, honors soldiers who served in the region, while the Sangam confluence point, where the Indus and Zanskar rivers visibly meet in contrasting colors, rounds out the day.

Pangong Lake

Day 3 covers the excursion to Pangong Lake, reached via Chang La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world at 5,486 metres. The drive itself passes through summer pasturelands used by local yak herders, with the pass offering panoramic views down into the valleys below. Pangong Lake itself is a brackish, high-altitude lake roughly 134 kilometers long, with around 60% of its length lying across the India-China border in Chinese-administered territory; the section accessible to travelers on this itinerary is along the lake's western Indian shore. The lake's changing blue hues, shifting with light and time of day, are one of its most photographed features.

Khardung La

Day 4 covers a day excursion to Khardung La, widely cited as one of the world's highest motorable passes at roughly 5,600 metres, connecting Leh to the Nubra and Shyok valleys. The summit offers sweeping views of the surrounding snow-capped range, and reaching it, like Chang La, is as much part of the experience as the destination itself, given how dramatically the road climbs from Leh's already high elevation.

Getting Home

The final day is kept simple, with checkout and a transfer to Leh Airport for departure.

Best Time to Visit

May through September is generally the practical travel window for this itinerary, when Leh's high-altitude roads and mountain passes are open and accessible. Outside this window, heavy snow can close roads to Pangong Lake and Khardung La entirely, and travel plans should be built around this seasonal reality rather than around general trip preferences.

Indian Rupee (INR) is the local currency. As foreign nationals, Nepali travelers require a Protected Area Permit to visit restricted areas including Pangong Lake and Khardung La, typically arranged through a registered travel agent in Leh rather than applied for independently; this is separate from any visa requirement and worth confirming well ahead of travel. Given the altitude involved throughout this itinerary, staying well hydrated, avoiding alcohol on the first day, and watching for symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness) matters more here than on almost any other India itinerary in this catalog; travelers with pre-existing heart or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before booking. Warm layers are essential even in the summer travel window, since temperatures at Chang La and Khardung La can drop sharply regardless of conditions in Leh itself.
