Short answer: For a first trip to Thailand, pick Bangkok for temples, food and shopping, Pattaya for an easy family beach break about two hours by road from Bangkok, and Phuket for the best beaches and island day trips. Phuket is wettest from May to October, so in that window Bangkok and Pattaya are the safer pair. With a week or more, combine Bangkok with one of the two beaches.
Bangkok vs Phuket is one of the most common questions first-time visitors ask about Thailand, and Pattaya usually joins the list as soon as a family starts planning. All three are easy to reach and set up for visitors, but they are very different places. Bangkok is a huge river capital. Pattaya is a seaside city on the Gulf of Thailand close enough to Bangkok to reach by road. Phuket is an island on the Andaman Sea with its own airport and a separate weather pattern.
This guide compares the three side by side: what each one is best for, how they suit families, couples and shoppers, how the weather differs month by month, and how to move between them. It is written for first-time visitors anywhere, and especially for travellers flying from Kathmandu, where Dashain and Tihar holidays fall right at the end of Thailand's rainy season. Travel times, flight routes and season dates were checked on 12 October 2026 against official or current sources, which are named under each table. Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket: which is best for a first trip?
The best choice depends on what you want most from the trip. Bangkok wins for culture, food and shopping. Phuket wins for beaches, clear water and boat trips. Pattaya sits between the two: a beach city with family attractions that you can reach from Bangkok without a domestic flight. Most first-time visitors are happiest with Bangkok plus one beach, rather than any single place on its own.
Here is how the three compare on the eight things first-time visitors ask about most.
| Criterion | Bangkok | Pattaya | Phuket |
|---|---|---|---|
| What kind of place | Capital city on the Chao Phraya River | Beach city on the eastern Gulf of Thailand, Chonburi province | Thailand's largest island, on the Andaman Sea |
| Beaches | None in the city | City beaches (Pattaya, Jomtien, Wong Amat) plus clearer water on Koh Larn island | The strongest of the three: Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Nai Harn and more on the west coast |
| Culture and temples | The strongest: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Chinatown, Ayutthaya day trip | Sanctuary of Truth, Big Buddha hill, Khao Chi Chan | Old Town shophouses, Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, Chinese shrines and the Vegetarian Festival |
| Shopping | The strongest: giant malls, Chatuchak weekend market, Pratunam wholesale clothing | Good malls and night markets on a smaller scale | Malls in Patong and near Phuket Town, weekend and walking street markets |
| Family fit | Good for older children; heat and traffic tire small ones | Very good: short transfers, gardens, aquarium, water parks, open zoo | Very good for beach families; choose Kata, Karon or Kamala over Patong |
| Travel time from Bangkok airports | Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang are both in Bangkok | About 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Suvarnabhumi; buses about 2 to 2.5 hours | About 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes by air; 12 hours or more by road |
| Best months for weather | November to February | November to February (driest of the three overall) | December to March |
| Nonstop from Kathmandu | Yes, to Suvarnabhumi (full-service) and Don Mueang (low-cost) | No: fly to Bangkok, then road | No nonstop service at present: connect in Bangkok or another hub |

A quick way to decide
- Only four or five days and it is your first time abroad? Bangkok plus Pattaya. No domestic flight, short road transfer, plenty to do in any weather.
- Beaches are the whole point? Phuket, ideally between December and March, with two or three nights in Bangkok at the start or end.
- Travelling with grandparents or toddlers? Pattaya or a quiet Phuket beach such as Kata or Kamala, and keep Bangkok short.
- Shopping and food are the priority? Bangkok, with Pattaya as an easy add-on.
- Travelling in October, which includes Dashain? Bangkok and Pattaya are drier than Phuket in October; Phuket improves through November.
What is Bangkok best for?

Bangkok is best for culture, food and shopping, and it is the arrival city for almost every trip from Nepal. The old royal quarter holds the Grand Palace and the main temples, Chinatown is one of the best street food areas in Asia, and the Siam and Sukhumvit areas have some of the biggest malls in the region. It has no beach, and it is hot and busy, so most visitors give it two to four days and then head to the coast.
Temples and the old royal quarter
The Grand Palace complex was begun in 1782 and contains Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It opens daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with tickets sold until 3:30 pm, according to the official Grand Palace website, so it works best as a morning visit before the heat builds. Wat Pho, a short walk south, holds the giant reclining Buddha and Thailand's best known traditional massage school. Wat Arun sits directly across the river and is reached by a short ferry crossing.
Shoulders and knees must be covered at the Grand Palace and at temples generally, for men and women. A light scarf or shawl and full-length trousers solve this for the whole trip. Our area by area Bangkok guide groups the sights so you do not cross the city twice in a day.
Food, markets and malls

Bangkok is the easiest place in Thailand to eat well at every level, from street stalls in Yaowarat (Chinatown) to food courts in the big malls, which are also the coolest place to be on a hot afternoon. If you are new to Thai cooking, our guide to Thai food and its regional cuisines explains what to order. Vegetarian travellers can look for the Thai sign for jay food (strict vegetarian, often marked with a yellow flag), and Bangkok also has a long-established Indian community around Phahurat, so Nepali families who prefer familiar flavours on some evenings can find them.
For shopping, Chatuchak weekend market runs in full on Saturday and Sunday, the Pratunam area is known for wholesale clothing, and the Siam malls, ICONSIAM on the river and MBK cover everything from luxury brands to phones and souvenirs. Our guide to Thailand's markets has the detail.
Bangkok with children
Bangkok works for families with school-age children who can handle heat and walking. SEA LIFE Bangkok is in the basement of Siam Paragon, reachable by the BTS Skytrain, and Safari World sits about 40 minutes from the city centre with a drive-through safari park and a separate marine park, according to TAGTHAI, the Tourism Authority of Thailand's booking platform. With toddlers, keep sightseeing to mornings, use the air-conditioned Skytrain and metro instead of taxis in traffic, and plan a pool afternoon at the hotel.
Day trips from Bangkok
Ayutthaya, the former royal capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 1991) and an easy day trip by train or road. It is the best single add-on for travellers who enjoy history. See our region by region map of where to go in Thailand for Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi and the north.
What Bangkok is not
Bangkok is not a relaxing beach holiday, and that is the main reason it should rarely be the only stop. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, and the touts outside the Grand Palace who claim it is "closed today" are a long-running scam: walk to the official gate and check yourself. Our list of dos and don'ts in Thailand covers temple etiquette and the rules about the monarchy, which are taken very seriously.
What is Pattaya best for?

Pattaya is best for a short, easy beach holiday close to Bangkok, especially for families with children or grandparents. It sits on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand in Chonburi province, about 144 km from Bangkok by road, and most of its family attractions are within a 30 to 40 minute drive of each other. Its beaches are not as good as Phuket's, but Koh Larn island, a short boat ride offshore, has much clearer water.
Pattaya has a loud reputation because of one nightlife strip at the southern end of Pattaya Beach. This guide, like our wider guide to things to do in Pattaya, focuses on the daytime and family side, which is most of the city. Families who want to stay well away from the busiest strip usually choose Jomtien to the south or Wong Amat and Naklua to the north.
Family attractions that make Pattaya work
| Attraction | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Koh Larn (Coral Island) | Island with several beaches, reached by public ferry (about 45 minutes) or speedboat from Bali Hai Pier | Families, couples, swimmers |
| Sanctuary of Truth | Huge seafront building carved entirely from wood, begun in 1981 and still being worked on | First-timers, grandparents, culture lovers |
| Nong Nooch Tropical Garden | Very large landscaped botanical garden with themed gardens and shows | Families, older travellers, photographers |
| Wat Phra Yai and Pratamnak Hill | Hilltop golden Buddha and viewpoints over Pattaya Bay | A short stop for everyone |
| Underwater World Pattaya | Aquarium with a walk-through tunnel | Young children, rainy afternoons |
| Ramayana and Columbia Pictures Aquaverse | Two large water parks south of the city | Children and teenagers |
| Khao Kheow Open Zoo | Large open-plan zoo north of Pattaya, with a night safari on set evenings | Families with children |
Checked: 12 Oct 2026, against our Pattaya family guide (attraction details checked 8 Oct 2026 with the Sanctuary of Truth, Underwater World Pattaya and Ramayana official sites and the Tourism Authority of Thailand) and Wikipedia for the Sanctuary of Truth start date. Opening days change, so confirm close to your travel date.
Pattaya's beaches compared with Phuket's
Pattaya Beach is a crescent of just under 3 km in front of the city centre, fine for a sunset walk but busy with boats. Jomtien, south of Pratamnak Hill, is longer and calmer and is where many families stay. For proper swimming water, most visitors take the ferry to Koh Larn and spend the day at Samae, Tien or Tawaen beach. If clear water and white sand are your priority, Phuket is clearly better; if short transfers and variety for children matter more, Pattaya often wins.
Who should skip Pattaya
Couples looking for a romantic, quiet beach and travellers who want snorkelling over coral straight off the hotel beach will usually be happier in Phuket or another Andaman island. Pattaya is a busy city by the sea rather than an island escape.
What is Phuket best for?

Phuket is best for beaches, clear Andaman water and island day trips, and it is the easiest beach base in Thailand for first-time visitors. It is Thailand's largest island, joined to the mainland by a bridge, with an international airport, hospitals and a long west coast of very different beaches. Its weak point is the weather from May to October, when the southwest monsoon brings rain, rough seas and strong currents on the west coast.
Which Phuket beach suits you
| Beach | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Patong | Busiest beach, most shops and restaurants, the island's nightlife centre | Groups who want everything within walking distance |
| Kata | Relaxed, good swimming in the dry season | Families, beginner surfers in the monsoon swell |
| Karon | Long sandy beach, quieter than Patong | Long walks, sunsets, families |
| Kamala | Low key, calmer bay | Couples, families with young children |
| Nai Harn | Small, pretty bay in the south | Quiet swimming, couples |
| Mai Khao and Nai Yang | Long, quiet beaches in the north near the airport | Resort stays, honeymooners |
Checked: 12 Oct 2026, Tourism Authority of Thailand Phuket destination page and our Phuket guide. The TAT notes that south coast beaches are usually busier than the north and asks swimmers to check the red flags.
More detail is in our guide to the best things to do in Phuket and our round-up of the best beaches in Thailand.
Island day trips
The islands around Phuket are the main reason many travellers choose it over Pattaya. Boats leave from Rassada Pier near Phuket Town and from Chalong Pier in the south.
- Phi Phi Islands: about 2 hours by large ferry or roughly 50 minutes to 1 hour by speedboat. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh has strict visitor rules and an annual closure; read our Phi Phi Islands guide first.
- Phang Nga Bay: limestone islands and sea caves, including the island known as James Bond Island, usually visited by longtail boat or sea canoe.
- Similan Islands: some of Thailand's clearest water for snorkelling and diving. The Similan and Surin national parks were closed from 15 May to 15 October 2026 for the monsoon, according to the Government Public Relations Department, and reopen in mid October for the dry season.
- Coral Island and Racha Island: shorter, calmer trips that suit children.
In the monsoon months some speedboat departures are cancelled because of rough seas, and the large ferry is the safer choice. Our guide to the best islands in Thailand compares Phuket with Krabi and the other island bases.
Phuket beyond the beach
Phuket Old Town has restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Thalang Road and Soi Romanee, and the Sunday Walking Street market (Lard Yai) runs on Thalang Road every Sunday from about 4 pm. The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill is a 45 metre statue faced with white Burmese marble, with wide views over Chalong Bay. The island's Chinese heritage shows in its shrines and in the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, which runs from 9 to 18 October in 2026 according to Pattaya Mail's report of the festival announcement. During the festival many stalls sell jay vegetarian food, which suits vegetarian travellers from Nepal well.
The honest downside of Phuket
Phuket is further away: there is no nonstop flight from Kathmandu at present, so you either connect in Bangkok or fly in through another hub. The airport is in the north of the island and Patong is about 40 km away, roughly an hour by car. In the monsoon months the west coast often flies red flags, and swimming there can be dangerous. If those trade-offs do not suit your dates, Pattaya or a Gulf island may fit better.
Which is better for families, couples or shoppers?
Families with young children usually do best in Pattaya or a calm Phuket beach, couples and honeymooners in Phuket, and shoppers in Bangkok. Most traveller types are happiest with a city and a beach together, which is why Bangkok appears in almost every successful first trip. The table below rates each place by type of traveller.
| Traveller type | Bangkok | Pattaya | Phuket | Our pick |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First trip abroad, short break | Strong | Strong | Good | Bangkok plus Pattaya |
| Families with toddlers | Fair (heat, traffic) | Strong (short transfers, aquarium, gardens) | Strong (calm bays in the dry season) | Pattaya, or Phuket from December to March |
| Families with grandparents | Fair (lots of walking) | Strong (gardens, short trips) | Good (stay near a quiet beach) | Pattaya with a short Bangkok stay |
| Honeymooners and couples | Good (river, rooftops, food) | Fair | Strong (sunset beaches, islands, resorts) | Phuket, with two nights in Bangkok |
| Shoppers | Strong | Good | Fair | Bangkok |
| Food and culture lovers | Strong | Fair | Good (Old Town, local southern food) | Bangkok, then Phuket Old Town |
| Beach and snorkelling | None | Fair (Koh Larn) | Strong | Phuket in the dry season |
| Solo and budget travellers | Strong (public transport) | Good | Good | Bangkok, then any beach |
| Diaspora families meeting in Thailand | Good (easy to meet at Suvarnabhumi) | Good | Strong if relatives fly in from the Gulf, India or Malaysia | Depends on where everyone is flying from |
Our assessment, based on the attraction, transport and weather facts checked on 12 Oct 2026 and cited elsewhere in this guide.
Families
The single biggest factor for families is transfer time. From Bangkok, Pattaya is a road trip; Phuket is a flight plus an airport drive. With small children, that difference matters more than the quality of the sand. Pattaya also has more rainy-day options close together, from the aquarium to indoor art museums. Phuket wins once children are old enough to enjoy snorkelling and boat days, and when you can travel in the dry months.
Couples and honeymooners
Phuket is the better honeymoon choice of the three: sunset beaches such as Kata Noi and Nai Harn, resort stays in the quieter north, and day trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. Add two nights in Bangkok for river views and food. If you are still choosing between countries, our guide to honeymoon destinations from Nepal compares Thailand with Bali, the Maldives and others.
Shoppers
Bangkok is in a different league for shopping. Pattaya has solid malls such as Central Festival Pattaya Beach and Terminal 21 Pattaya, plus the popular Thepprasit Night Market on weekend evenings (check the current opening days). Phuket has Jungceylon and Central Patong in Patong, Central Phuket near Phuket Town, and the Sunday Walking Street. If shopping is a priority, finish the trip in Bangkok so you are not carrying bags through domestic flights and ferries, and check the Nepal customs allowance before you fly home.
Food for Nepali travellers
Indian restaurants and vegetarian options are easy to find in the main tourist areas of all three places. Thai food is often cooked with fish sauce and shrimp paste, so strict vegetarians should learn the word jay and ask clearly. Bangkok has the widest choice, followed by Phuket and Pattaya.
How does the weather differ across the three?
Bangkok and Pattaya share a similar pattern: mostly dry from November to April, rainy from May to October, with September and October the wettest months. Phuket gets about twice as much rain a year as Pattaya, and its rainy season on the Andaman coast is longer, with heavy rain from May right through October and a wetter November than the other two. December to March is the best time for all three together.
Thailand's government describes the rainy season as running from mid-May to mid-October, with the cooler, drier season from mid-October to mid-February (thailand.go.th). The Thai Meteorological Department marked the start of the 2026 rainy season on 15 May. The monthly averages below show how the three places compare in practice.
| Month | Bangkok rain (mm) / rainy days | Pattaya rain (mm) / rainy days | Phuket rain (mm) / rainy days | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24 / 2 | 16 / 2 | 50 / 4 | Dry and pleasant in all three |
| February | 21 / 2 | 20 / 2 | 24 / 2 | Driest month in Phuket; excellent everywhere |
| March | 51 / 3 | 47 / 3 | 81 / 6 | Getting hotter; still good beach weather |
| April | 93 / 5 | 68 / 5 | 135 / 10 | Hottest month in Bangkok; Songkran on 13 to 15 April |
| May | 217 / 12 | 121 / 9 | 237 / 16 | Rainy season starts; Phuket seas get rougher |
| June | 199 / 13 | 132 / 10 | 249 / 16 | Showers, but Pattaya stays relatively dry |
| July | 190 / 14 | 104 / 10 | 240 / 16 | Pattaya is the driest of the three |
| August | 227 / 16 | 91 / 9 | 309 / 17 | Pattaya still workable; Phuket wet and swelly |
| September | 336 / 18 | 214 / 13 | 350 / 19 | Wettest month in Bangkok and Phuket |
| October | 289 / 14 | 225 / 14 | 336 / 19 | Wettest month in Pattaya; rain eases late in the month in Bangkok |
| November | 45 / 4 | 57 / 4 | 178 / 13 | Bangkok and Pattaya turn dry; Phuket improving but still showery |
| December | 12 / 1 | 12 / 2 | 82 / 8 | Peak season begins everywhere |
| Year | 1,702 / 105 | 1,106 / 82 | 2,272 / 146 | Phuket has roughly twice Pattaya's yearly rain |
Checked: 12 Oct 2026. Averages are 1991 to 2020 climate normals from the World Meteorological Organization, as published in the climate tables for Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket; a rainy day is one with at least 1 mm of rain. Season dates from the Thai Meteorological Department and thailand.go.th. Averages are not a forecast: check the TMD forecast in the week before you travel.
Two things the averages do not show. First, rain in Bangkok and Pattaya usually comes as heavy afternoon or evening storms, so mornings are often usable even in the wet months. Second, on Phuket's west coast the problem in the monsoon is not only rain but the sea itself: bigger waves, stronger currents and boat trips that may not run. Our month by month guide to the best time to visit Thailand covers the north and the Gulf islands too.
Dashain and Tihar 2026: which place fits?
In 2026, Vijaya Dashami falls on 21 October and Tihar's Laxmi Puja on 8 November, with Bhai Tika on 10 November. That puts most Nepali holiday travel in the last part of Thailand's rainy season.
- Dashain (mid to late October): Bangkok and Pattaya are the safer choice. October is still wet in both, but showers are usually short, and the sights do not depend on calm seas. Phuket in October averages about 19 rainy days and rough water on the west coast.
- Tihar (early to mid November): Bangkok and Pattaya are usually dry by now, and Phuket is improving week by week. The Similan Islands have reopened for the season.
- After Tihar (late November and December): all three are in good shape, and Loy Krathong, the festival of floating lanterns on rivers and lakes, falls on the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month, expected around 24 November in 2026 (Sukhothai's Loy Krathong festival runs from 15 to 24 November 2026, according to thailand.go.th).
Festival weeks are also the busiest time for flights out of Kathmandu, so book early. Our guide to Dashain and Tihar holidays abroad compares Thailand with other short-haul options for the festival break.
If your dates fall in Phuket's rainy season
From roughly June to September, when Phuket is at its wettest, the Gulf of Thailand islands are often a better beach choice: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao take their heaviest rain later, from about October to December. Our Koh Samui guide explains how to reach it from Bangkok. Pattaya, on the same Gulf, is also relatively dry in July and August.
Can you combine two or all three in one trip?
Yes. Bangkok plus Pattaya or Bangkok plus Phuket is easy in a week, and all three fit comfortably in ten days or more. The simplest pattern is to start in Bangkok, take the road to Pattaya, return to Bangkok and fly to Phuket, or to skip one of the beaches if your trip is short. Moving bases eats roughly half a day each time, so fewer stops usually means a better holiday.
| Trip length | Realistic combination | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 5 nights | Bangkok and Pattaya, or Phuket alone | Short breaks, first trips abroad, families with small children |
| 6 to 7 nights | Bangkok and Pattaya, or Bangkok and Phuket | Most first-time visitors |
| 8 to 10 nights | Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket | Families who want city, easy beach and island days |
| 11 nights or more | All three, or Bangkok, Phuket and a second island such as Krabi or Phi Phi | Honeymooners and longer festival holidays |
Our planning guide, based on the transfer times checked on 12 Oct 2026 and shown in the next section.
Which combination makes most sense
- Bangkok and Pattaya: the easiest pairing, all by road, no domestic flight. Good in almost any month, including Dashain.
- Bangkok and Phuket: the classic city and beach trip. Best from November to April. Fly Bangkok to Phuket rather than go by road.
- All three: works well in eight nights or more. Order matters: Bangkok first (arrival from Kathmandu), then Pattaya by road, then a flight to Phuket from Bangkok or from U-Tapao airport near Pattaya, and finally a flight back to Bangkok for your connection home.
Our Thailand itinerary guide shows how to add Chiang Mai or a second island, and our step by step guide on how to book a Thailand trip from Nepal covers flights, hotels and paperwork in order. If you are still deciding between countries, see our comparison of Vietnam or Thailand.
How do you travel between them?
Bangkok to Pattaya is a road trip of about 144 km, typically 1.5 to 2 hours by car from Suvarnabhumi airport and 2 to 3 hours from central Bangkok. Bangkok to Phuket is a flight of about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, with many daily departures from both Bangkok airports. Pattaya to Phuket is easiest by flying from U-Tapao airport, about 45 minutes south of Pattaya, or by going back to Suvarnabhumi.
| Route | Mode | Approximate time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu to Bangkok | Nonstop flight | About 3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes | Thai Airways (twice daily on current schedules) flies to Suvarnabhumi (BKK); Nepal Airlines has filed a few weekly flights there, and Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air have filed flights to Don Mueang (DMK), but check current timetables because these have been irregular in 2026. Schedules change by season |
| Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to Pattaya | Private car or hotel transfer | About 1.5 to 2 hours | Uses Motorway 7 and avoids central Bangkok traffic |
| Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) to Pattaya | Airport bus | About 2 hours | Departs from the airport's first floor |
| Central Bangkok to Pattaya | Bus from Ekkamai or Mo Chit terminals | About 2.5 hours, longer in traffic | Ekkamai is next to the BTS Skytrain |
| Bangkok to Pattaya | Train on the Eastern Line | About 2.5 hours | Limited service; Pattaya station is outside the centre |
| Bangkok (BKK) to Phuket (HKT) | Flight | About 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes | Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Thai Vietjet and Thai AirAsia |
| Bangkok (DMK) to Phuket (HKT) | Flight | About 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes | Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air |
| Bangkok to Phuket | Overnight bus | About 12 to 17 hours | About 826 km by road, mostly from the Southern Bus Terminal; not practical on a short trip |
| Bangkok to Phuket | Train to Surat Thani, then bus | About 12.5 to 18.5 hours | No railway reaches Phuket itself |
| Pattaya (U-Tapao, UTP) to Phuket | Flight | About 1 hour 40 minutes | About one flight a day on current schedules, operated by Bangkok Airways; check the schedule for your date |
| Phuket airport to Patong | Car or taxi | About 1 hour (about 40 km) | Allow longer at peak times |
| Phuket to Phi Phi | Ferry or speedboat from Rassada Pier | About 2 hours by ferry, 50 minutes to 1 hour by speedboat | Speedboats may be cancelled in rough monsoon seas |

Getting to Bangkok from Kathmandu
Every trip from Nepal to these three places starts with a flight to Bangkok. Nonstop flights take about three and a half hours, and Thailand is 1 hour 15 minutes ahead of Nepal. Our guide to the Kathmandu to Bangkok flight covers airlines, airports and the busiest travel seasons, and our Kathmandu airport international departure guide walks through check-in and emigration at Tribhuvan International Airport. If it is your first flight, read our first-time flight tips too.
Check which Bangkok airport you land at
Bangkok has two airports. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles full-service airlines, including the Thai Airways and Nepal Airlines flights from Kathmandu, and has its own bus to Pattaya. Don Mueang (DMK) is the main base for low-cost airlines, including the Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air flights filed from Kathmandu (check they are operating before you book) and many domestic flights. If you land at one and fly to Phuket from the other, you must cross the city by road, which can take a long time in traffic. The simplest plan is to book your Phuket flight from the same airport you land at, or to spend a night in Bangkok between the two flights.
Flying to Phuket without going through Bangkok
Phuket has nonstop international flights from hubs including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi, Mumbai, Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. That is useful for Nepali diaspora families: relatives working in the Gulf or Malaysia can often fly straight to Phuket and meet the family there, while those coming from Kathmandu connect through Bangkok. Check the latest schedules with the airlines, as routes change each season.
Paperwork before you fly
Entry rules depend on your passport. For Nepali passport holders, see our Thailand visa page for the current position, and check it again before you book, because rules change. All non-Thai travellers arriving in Thailand must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within three days before arrival on the official site, tdac.immigration.go.th; ignore lookalike websites. Before leaving Nepal, check the foreign currency limit from Nepal, arrange travel insurance from Nepal that covers water activities if you plan boat trips, and run through our pre-trip checklist. Our Thailand travel tips and our honest look at whether Thailand is safe cover the practical side once you land.
Planning the trip
Once you know which places fit your dates and your group, the rest is logistics: flights from Kathmandu, a Bangkok hotel near the Skytrain, a Pattaya or Phuket base that suits your family, and transfers that do not cross Bangkok at rush hour. For a sense of what goes into the overall budget, see our Thailand trip cost guide. To see how routes covering Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket are usually put together, browse our Thailand tour packages.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Bangkok or Phuket?
Bangkok is better for temples, food, shopping and city life, while Phuket is better for beaches, clear water and island trips. For a first trip to Thailand, most travellers enjoy both: two or three nights in Bangkok, then a short flight to Phuket. If you can only choose one, pick Phuket for relaxation between December and March and Bangkok for culture or a rainy-season visit.
Is Pattaya better than Phuket for families?
Pattaya is often better for families with toddlers or grandparents because it is about two hours by road from Bangkok, with no domestic flight, and its gardens, aquarium, water parks and zoo sit close together. Phuket is better for families with older children who want snorkelling and boat trips, especially between December and March when the Andaman Sea is calm.
Can I do Bangkok and Phuket in one trip?
Yes, Bangkok and Phuket combine easily in one trip. Flights between Bangkok and Phuket take about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, with many departures every day from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports. A week gives you about three nights in Bangkok and four in Phuket. Book the Phuket flight from the same Bangkok airport you land at.
Which has better beaches, Pattaya or Phuket?
Phuket has clearly better beaches than Pattaya. Phuket's west coast beaches, such as Kata, Karon, Kamala and Nai Harn, have cleaner water and softer sand. Pattaya's city beaches are busier with boats, so most visitors take the ferry to Koh Larn island for swimming. Pattaya's advantage is convenience and family attractions, not the beach itself.
Is Bangkok worth visiting?
Yes, Bangkok is worth visiting for at least two or three days. It has the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, some of the best street food in Asia in Chinatown, huge malls and the Chatuchak weekend market, plus an easy day trip to Ayutthaya. Most travellers from Nepal arrive in Bangkok anyway, so it makes sense to explore it before heading to the beach.
Which is best for shopping, Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket?
Bangkok is the best of the three for shopping. It has the Siam mall district, ICONSIAM, MBK, the Pratunam wholesale clothing area and Chatuchak weekend market. Pattaya has good malls and night markets on a smaller scale, and Phuket has malls in Patong and near Phuket Town. Finish your Thailand trip in Bangkok if shopping is a priority.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket?
Phuket is the best honeymoon choice of the three, with sunset beaches, quiet resort areas in the north of the island and day trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. Two nights in Bangkok for river views and food make a good start. Pattaya is a busy city by the sea and suits families more than honeymooners.
How far is Phuket from Bangkok?
Phuket is about 826 km from Bangkok by road and roughly 690 km in a straight line. The flight takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, while an overnight bus takes 12 hours or more. There is no railway to Phuket, so almost every visitor flies from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang airport.
Which is best in October, Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket?
In October, Bangkok and Pattaya are the better choice. October is still wet in both, but rain usually comes as short storms and the sights do not depend on calm seas. Phuket averages about 19 rainy days in October with rough west coast water. For a Dashain trip in 2026, plan Bangkok and Pattaya, and keep Phuket for November onwards.
Is Phuket worth visiting in the rainy season?
Phuket can be worth visiting in the rainy season from May to October if you accept some rain and choose activities carefully. Hotels are quieter, but west coast beaches often fly red flags, some speedboat trips are cancelled and the Similan Islands close until mid October. Families wanting beach time are usually better off in Phuket from December to March.
