Bangkok alone suits a short trip of four or five days for temples, floating markets and shopping. Pattaya is the closest beach, reached by road, and adds Coral Island without a flight. Phuket and Krabi need a domestic flight but bring the Phi Phi and Four Islands boat trips. Koh Samui suits honeymooners, and Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai in the north suit travellers who prefer temples and cooler hills to beaches.

Cover your shoulders and knees at the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Shorts, sleeveless tops and see-through clothes are not allowed. Remove your shoes before entering temple halls and do not point your feet at Buddha images. Visit in the morning to avoid the worst heat and crowds, and carry water, especially with elderly parents. The palace occasionally closes for royal ceremonies.

Popular areas include Pratunam for clothing, MBK and the Siam malls, and Chatuchak Weekend Market, which opens on weekends, so ask us to place your free day on a Saturday or Sunday if you want it. Check your airline’s baggage allowance before buying in bulk.

The Full Moon Party takes place every month at Haad Rin Beach on Koh Phangan, on or near the night of the full moon. The date sometimes moves when it clashes with a Buddhist holiday, so we confirm it before fixing your flights. Koh Phangan is on the Gulf coast, which is usually wettest from October to December, so the rest of the year is more comfortable.
