Warung food, scooters, massages and temple tickets are cheap. The bills that surprise people are private villas in Seminyak and Canggu, beach club minimum spends, imported alcohol and the "++" tax and service charge added to restaurant menus.

According to Trading Economics, the US dollar reached an all-time high of about IDR 18,279 in July 2026 and was trading close to IDR 17,965 on 30 September 2026, roughly 7 to 8 percent weaker for the rupiah than a year earlier. For anyone arriving with dollars, euros, pounds or Australian dollars, that makes local prices in Bali a little cheaper than they were in 2025. The flip side is that many tourist businesses, especially villas and beach clubs, now quote prices in dollars or adjust rupiah rates upward, so the saving is clearest at warungs, markets and local transport.

Is the visa fee going up?
Possibly. On 12 August 2026 Indonesia's Director General of Immigration presented a proposal to raise the e-VOA (applied for online) to IDR 750,000 and the visa bought on arrival at the airport to IDR 1,000,000. At the time of writing this remained a proposal, not an effective tariff, and the official fee was still IDR 500,000. Check the official Indonesian e-Visa website close to your travel date, and apply online in advance either way: it is quicker at the airport and, if the tiered plan goes ahead, cheaper.
How do you pay the Bali tourist levy?
The levy has been compulsory since 14 February 2024. According to the Love Bali portal run by the provincial government, it is IDR 150,000 per person, paid once while you are in Bali and before you leave Indonesia. Payment is cashless only (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, UnionPay, bank transfer or QRIS), and you receive a QR code voucher by email. You can pay online before flying, at counters at Ngurah Rai airport and harbours, or through registered hotels and attractions. Holders of diplomatic, student, family and resident permits (KITAS or KITAP) are exempt. Only use the official site: several paid lookalike sites charge extra.

What does "++" mean on a Bali menu?
When a menu says prices are "++" or "subject to tax and service", your bill will be higher than the printed price. The first plus is a service charge, usually around 10 percent at hotels and upmarket restaurants. The second is a regional restaurant tax (known locally as PB1) of about 10 percent, applied on top of the service charge. The combined uplift is typically around 21 percent, so a IDR 100,000 main course becomes roughly IDR 121,000. Warungs and small cafés usually charge nett prices, which is another reason local food works out so much cheaper.
How much does getting around Bali cost?
Bali has no rail network and very limited public buses, so most visitors rely on ride-hailing apps, scooters or a private driver. Distances look short on a map, but traffic around Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud is slow, which pushes up the time and cost of long transfers.

Should you rent a scooter or hire a driver?
For a confident rider travelling solo or as a couple, a scooter is by far the cheapest way to get around, at roughly the cost of one café lunch per day plus about IDR 10,000 of fuel. You legally need a valid motorcycle licence and an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles, and police checkpoints do fine unlicensed riders. Travel insurance often refuses scooter accident claims when you ride without the right licence or a helmet, which can turn a cheap rental into a very expensive hospital bill.
For families, groups or anyone heading to far-flung places such as Sidemen, Munduk or Amed, a private driver at around IDR 1,000,000 a day for the whole car often works out cheaper per person than a string of taxis, and far safer than riding a scooter on mountain roads.

Most of Bali's famous sights charge modest entrance fees, and many include a sarong for temple visits. Foreign visitors pay more than Indonesian residents at almost every site. How much does a Nusa Penida trip cost in 2026?
Nusa Penida, with Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and manta ray snorkelling, is the most popular side trip from Bali and one of the biggest single costs for many visitors. It also became a little more expensive in September 2026.
