Burj Khalifa Guide: Observation Decks, Timing and Tips

27 min read 27 Oct 2026
Burj Khalifa rising above Downtown Dubai and Burj Lake on a clear blue day

Short answer: The Dubai Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall, has 163 floors above ground, and has held the title of the world's tallest building since it officially opened on 4 January 2010. Visitors ride up from the lower ground floor of The Dubai Mall to three ticketed experiences: At the Top on levels 124 and 125, At the Top SKY on level 148, and a lounge on levels 152 to 154. For the best visit, book a timed slot about two hours before sunset, allow around 90 minutes at the top, and then watch the Dubai Fountain show from the lake promenade after 6 pm.

This guide is written for first time visitors, couples, families with children, and the many Nepali families in the Gulf who host parents from Kathmandu and want to give them one unforgettable evening. It explains which observation deck suits whom, how the sunset timing works month by month, where the entrance actually is, how long the visit takes, and what to know when you go with elderly parents or a pram. It does not list ticket prices, which change by time slot and season; the official booking site shows the current rate for each slot.

If you are still shaping the wider trip, our complete Dubai travel guide covers seasons, areas, food and local rules, and the list of places to visit in Dubai shows where the tower fits among the city's other sights.

How tall is the Dubai Burj Khalifa and how many floors does it have?

The Burj Khalifa is 828 metres (2,717 feet) tall and has 163 floors above ground plus one basement level. Guinness World Records lists it as the tallest building in the world at 828 metres, officially opened on 4 January 2010, and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), the body that standardises skyscraper heights, gives the same 828 metres and 163 floors.

To picture the scale, 828 metres is almost three times the original 300 metre height of the Eiffel Tower. More usefully for a visitor, the public decks are not at the very top. The highest ticketed level you can reach is 154, and the upper part of the tower is a slender spire. The official Burj Khalifa site explains that the telescopic spire alone uses more than 4,000 tonnes of structural steel and rises more than 200 metres.

Why do some sources give different floor counts?

You will see different floor counts on travel sites, such as 154 or 160, and sometimes higher totals. The confusion comes from counting different things. 163 is the count of floors above ground used by Britannica and the CTBUH. 154 is the highest level that visitors can reach on a ticket. Higher numbers usually include spire levels that are not habitable floors. When someone asks "how many floors does the Burj Dubai have", the accepted answer is 163.

How was it designed?

The tower was designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, with Adrian Smith as the design partner. According to the official site, the triple lobed footprint is inspired by the regional desert flower Hymenocallis, and the Y shaped plan steps back along its three wings as it rises, which gives the structure stability and opens up views of the Arabian Gulf. The building's glass skin is made of about 26,000 individually cut panels. The name changed from Burj Dubai to Burj Khalifa at the opening ceremony, in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi.

Which observation deck should you choose?

Dubai cityscape and lagoons seen from high up in the Burj Khalifa at sunset

For most first time visitors, At the Top on levels 124 and 125 is the right choice: it has the indoor and outdoor viewing areas, the longest opening window and the widest choice of time slots. At the Top SKY on level 148 suits couples and special occasions because it adds a higher deck, priority access, a host and a lounge with refreshments. The lounge on levels 152 to 154 is a premium, quieter experience for those who want the highest public point of the tower.

The official booking site groups these as Silver (levels 124 and 125), Gold (At the Top SKY, which also includes levels 124 and 125) and Platinum (the lounge on levels 152, 153 and 154). The names may change, but the levels have stayed the same for years.

Checked: 27 Oct 2026, burjkhalifa.ae observation decks page and ticket.atthetop.ae experience pages. Inclusions change, so read the ticket description before you pay.

Is the higher SKY deck worth it?

It depends on what you value. The view from level 148 is higher, but at this height the difference between 452 and 555 metres is less dramatic than the numbers suggest; both decks look down on every other building in the city. What the SKY ticket really buys is comfort: a faster queue, a seated lounge, a host who points out landmarks and a less crowded outdoor terrace. For a honeymoon couple, an anniversary or a parent who finds crowds tiring, that comfort can be worth it. For a family of five on a first visit, the standard levels 124 and 125 usually give the full experience.

One rule to know: the official FAQ says SKY guests can spend up to about 30 minutes on level 148 before continuing down to levels 124 and 125, so it is not an unlimited stay at the higher deck.

What about the other skyline decks nearby?

If Burj Khalifa slots are sold out, Sky Views Observatory at the Address Sky View hotel, a short walk away, has a glass floor, a glass slide and an Edge Walk. It is much lower than the Burj Khalifa decks, but it gives a classic view of the tower itself, which you cannot get while you are standing inside it. Our guide to things to do in Dubai compares it with the city's other viewpoints.

What is the best time to go up the Burj Khalifa?

The best time to visit the Burj Khalifa is the late afternoon, timed so you are on the deck as the sun sets: you see the city in daylight, watch the sunset over the Gulf, and then see the lights come on. The official At the Top FAQ says there is no separate sunset ticket and suggests booking a level 124 entry about 120 minutes before sunset, which leaves time for security, the lift queue and finding a spot at the glass.

Sunset slots sell out first, often days ahead in the cool season and on weekends, and resellers usually label them as "prime time". If you cannot get one, two other windows work well: the first slots after opening, when the air is often clearest and crowds are lighter, and the evening after dark, when the city lights and the fountain shows below are the attraction.

Sunset time and suggested entry slot by month

Dubai stays on UTC+4 all year with no daylight saving, so sunset only shifts with the seasons. The table below uses approximate sunset times for around the 21st of each month and the official "about 120 minutes before sunset" guidance. Always check the exact sunset time for your date on a weather or sunset app.

NovemberAbout 5:30 pmAbout 3:30 pmCool season begins; very popular
DecemberAbout 5:35 pmAbout 3:35 pmPeak season; book well ahead

Checked: 27 Oct 2026, Gaisma Dubai sun data (approximate monthly values) and the ticket.atthetop.ae FAQ. Note the SKY and lounge last entry (7:00 pm) is earlier than the standard deck (8:15 pm), so from May to August, when sunset is close to or after 7 pm, do not leave those bookings late in the day.

Which season is best for clear views?

The clearest, most comfortable months are generally November to March, when Dubai's cool season brings lower humidity. Summer haze and dust can soften the view, and the official terms are clear that Emaar is not responsible for weather that affects visibility; there are no refunds or rain checks for poor weather. For Nepali travellers, the Dashain and Tihar holidays usually fall around the start of the cool season, which is one reason Dubai is such a popular festival break. Our month by month guide to the best time to visit Dubai covers heat, crowds and events in detail.

How do you book and enter At the Top?

Book At the Top online on the official site (ticket.atthetop.ae) or through an authorised reseller, choose a date and a timed slot, then go to the lower ground floor of The Dubai Mall and follow the signs to the At the Top entrance near the Burj Khalifa lifts. Pre-booking is not compulsory, according to the official At the Top FAQ, but walk-up slots at popular times are often gone, so booking ahead is the practical choice.

Checked: 27 Oct 2026, ticket.atthetop.ae tickets page. Hours can differ during Ramadan, Eid and New Year's Eve, so confirm the slots shown in the booking calendar for your date.

Booking rules worth knowing before you pay

  • Tickets are timed. They are valid only for the date and time printed on them. Arrive on time; peak periods bring crowds and waits.
  • Cancellations. The official experience pages say cancellations are accepted only up to 24 hours before the visit.
  • Children. Children under 3 are admitted free. Children up to 16 must be with an adult at all times, and a child ticket cannot be bought without an adult ticket.
  • Dress code. Smart casual. Shoulders and knees covered is a sensible standard in Dubai's public spaces.
  • Weather. The outdoor terrace may close in bad weather. There are no refunds or rain checks for poor visibility.
  • Photography. Holiday photos are part of the experience, but professional photography is not allowed.

Where exactly is the entrance?

The visitor entrance to At the Top is not at the foot of the tower itself but inside The Dubai Mall. The official directions are to go to the lower ground floor of The Dubai Mall and use the gate near the Burj Khalifa elevator. The mall is enormous, so give yourself 15 to 20 minutes of buffer to find it, more if you are coming from the metro or parking far away. Mall staff and the directory screens point the way to "At the Top".

How you arriveWhere to goTip
Dubai MetroRed Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station, then the covered link bridge into the mallThe link bridge and mall corridors make this a long walk; fine for fit adults, tiring for elderly parents
Taxi or ride hailingAsk for The Dubai Mall, then walk to the lower ground floorEasiest choice with parents, small children or a wheelchair
Own carFashion Avenue car park at The Dubai Mall (official recommendation)Weekend evenings are busy; arrive early
Staying in DowntownWalk via the Burj Lake promenade into the mallLets you combine the deck and the fountain without transport

Checked: 27 Oct 2026, ticket.atthetop.ae FAQ and experience pages; emaar.com Dubai Fountain page for metro access.

Security and what you cannot take up

Expect airport style security at the entrance. The official FAQ lists prohibited items including glass bottles, aerosol cans, knives and electronics such as laptops, tablets and e-cigarettes, along with obvious items such as firearms and fireworks. Personal handbags are allowed, but strollers, shopping bags, sports bags and backpacks go to the luggage room near the entrance and are collected on the way out. Outside food and drink are not allowed; there are cafés on the ground level and on level 124.

If you have been shopping in the mall before your slot, drop the bags at your hotel or in the luggage room first, since queuing with full shopping bags slows everyone down.

How long does a visit take?

A typical Burj Khalifa visit takes about 1 hour 30 minutes from entering the lower ground floor to coming back down, according to the official At the Top FAQ, and it can be longer at peak times. Add travel through the mall before and after, plus fountain viewing if you stay into the evening, and the whole Downtown outing fills three to four hours comfortably.

StageTypical timeWhat happens
Finding the entrance in the mall15 to 20 minutesWalk to the lower ground floor and the At the Top gate
Security and queueVaries; longer at sunset and weekendsBag check, luggage room, ticket scan, short exhibition walk
Lift to level 124A short rideHigh speed lifts; the official site describes them as among the fastest in the world
Levels 124 and 12545 to 60 minutesIndoor glass decks, outdoor terrace, telescopes, café
Level 148 (SKY only)Up to about 30 minutesLounge, refreshments, higher terrace
Queue for the lift down and exitVaries with crowdsCollect anything left in the luggage room

Stage times other than the official 90 minute average and the 30 minute level 148 limit are our planning estimates, not official figures. Waiting times swing most around sunset and on weekends.

Is it worth staying on the deck through sunset and after dark?

Yes, if you can. The official FAQ sets a time limit only for level 148, not for levels 124 and 125, so a slot about two hours before sunset lets you see daylight, golden hour and the first city lights. Just remember that the last lift up is well before closing, and the deck itself closes at 9:00 pm on the current schedule.

Can you see the Dubai Fountain from the Burj Khalifa?

Dubai Fountain jets lit purple in front of the illuminated Burj Khalifa at night

Yes, the Dubai Fountain is directly below the Burj Khalifa on Burj Lake, and you can watch the water patterns from the decks on the lake side. From more than 450 metres up, though, the show looks small and you lose the music and the spray, so most visitors go up for the view and then watch at least one show from the ground.

The Dubai Fountain reopened on 1 October 2025 after a five month renovation, and Emaar has kept a schedule of two afternoon shows and evening shows every 30 minutes. Emaar describes it as the world's largest performing fountain, set on the 23.81 acre Burj Lake and designed by the California company WET.

DayAfternoon showsEvening shows
Saturday to Thursday1:00 pm and 1:30 pmEvery 30 minutes, 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm
Friday2:00 pm and 2:30 pmEvery 30 minutes, 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm

Checked: 27 Oct 2026, emaar.com Dubai Fountain page and thedubaimall.com Dubai Fountain page. Show times can change for maintenance, Ramadan or special events.

Best places to watch the fountain at ground level

  • The promenade around Burj Lake. Emaar confirms the fountain can be enjoyed free of charge from the promenade. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for evening shows, especially on weekends.
  • Dubai Fountain Boardwalk. A ticketed floating walkway that takes you within about 9 metres of the show, according to Emaar.
  • Abra lake ride. A ticketed traditional wooden boat ride on Burj Lake during the evening shows.
  • Souk Al Bahar waterfront. A good angle with the tower behind the water.
  • Restaurant terraces in The Dubai Mall and Souk Al Bahar. Comfortable for parents, but tables facing the lake are in high demand at show times.

How to combine the deck and the fountain in one evening

With the current hours, the deck is open while the first evening fountain shows run, from 6:00 pm until closing at 9:00 pm. A simple plan works well: enter about two hours before sunset, watch the sunset from levels 124 and 125, look down on one fountain show from above, then come down and watch the next show from the promenade. From mid October to January, sunset falls before about 6:00 pm, so this fits neatly into one evening.

Is the Burj Khalifa good for kids and elderly parents?

Yes. The official FAQ states that the entire At the Top experience is wheelchair accessible, the lifts do the climbing, and the decks are enclosed and air conditioned. The hard part for children and older people is not the tower itself but the walking through The Dubai Mall, the queues at peak times and late evenings. Plan around those and the visit is easy for all ages.

Visiting with elderly parents

Many Nepali families working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and across the Gulf bring parents over from Kathmandu, and the Burj Khalifa is usually top of the list. These steps make the evening easier:

  • Take a taxi to The Dubai Mall rather than the metro; the walk from the metro link bridge is long.
  • Borrow or rent a wheelchair. The Dubai Mall lists wheelchairs and baby strollers among its guest services, and a mobility rental outlet in the mall rents manual and motorised wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Even a parent who walks well may welcome one inside the mall.
  • Choose a weekday and a non-sunset slot if your parent tires easily; queues are shorter.
  • Consider At the Top SKY for its priority access and seated lounge, if comfort matters more than cost.
  • Eat before you go. Outside food is not allowed inside. If a parent needs food at set times for diabetes or other medical reasons, ask at the entrance before security; the published rule does not mention medical exceptions, so do not assume one.
  • Bring a light shawl or jacket. The indoor areas are air conditioned and can feel cool after the outdoor heat.
  • Talk about heights in advance. The fast lift and the floor to ceiling glass can unsettle some older people; standing back from the glass on the indoor deck is perfectly fine.

For pregnant visitors, the official FAQ says the experience is safe for expectant mothers, but the VR add-on is not permitted during pregnancy or for anyone with heart conditions, vertigo or dizziness.

Visiting with children

  • Strollers are not allowed on the decks; they must go into the luggage room, so bring a baby carrier for infants.
  • Children up to 16 must stay with an adult at all times. The official FAQ advises telling children, before you enter, to go to the nearest Guest Ambassador if they get separated.
  • The VR experience, an optional extra, is for ages 10 and up.
  • Late slots can be hard on small children; an afternoon slot followed by an early fountain show and dinner is gentler.
  • The Dubai Mall has baby changing rooms and prayer rooms, useful during a long Downtown visit.

Our guide to Dubai with family covers child friendly hotels, water parks and how to pace the days.

For a couple's trip built around views and dinners, our Dubai honeymoon guide has more ideas.

Is the Burj Khalifa open during Ramadan?

At the Top has stayed open during Ramadan in past years, usually with adjusted hours; Khaleej Times, for example, reported later evening hours during Ramadan 2017. Ramadan hours are set each year, and there is no published Ramadan 2027 schedule yet. The UAE's Astronomy Centre expects Ramadan 2027 to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting, with Eid Al Fitr expected around 9 or 10 March 2027 (The National, October 2026).

If your trip falls in Ramadan, check the booking calendar for that date, be ready for later evening crowds after iftar, and be considerate about eating, drinking or smoking in public view during fasting hours. Fountain show times can also change during the month.

What else is nearby in Downtown Dubai?

Downtown Dubai at night with palm trees, low rise buildings and the Burj Khalifa behind

Downtown Dubai packs several of the city's main sights within walking distance of the Burj Khalifa, so it is easy to spend a full afternoon and evening there. The Dubai Mall alone holds an aquarium, an ice rink and a large indoor waterfall, and the lake, the opera house and the souk style shopping centre are a short stroll away.

Where to stay for an easy Burj Khalifa visit

Staying in Downtown Dubai means you can walk to the tower and the fountain, which is especially helpful with elderly parents or small children. Hotels around Burj Lake and The Dubai Mall are the most convenient but also the busiest. If you would rather stay near the beach or in Old Dubai, a hotel near a Red Line metro station still makes the trip simple. Our guide on where to stay in Dubai compares the main areas.

How do you fit the Burj Khalifa into a Dubai trip from Nepal?

The Burj Khalifa fits naturally into the Downtown day of almost any Dubai trip, and it works even on a long layover. From Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, flydubai, Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines fly non-stop to Dubai International (DXB), with scheduled flying times of about 4 hours 40 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes. Our map of direct flights from Kathmandu lists the Gulf routes and the other airports in the UAE that Nepal connects to.

On entry: the UAE visa is a separate step from your flight booking, and the rules for Nepali citizens differ from those for some other nationalities who can get a visa on arrival. Our team's visa guidance page is the place to start, and the UAE's official portals have the current rules.

A Downtown day that works

Spend the hot middle of the day inside The Dubai Mall and the aquarium, enter the Burj Khalifa about two hours before sunset, stay on the deck through the sunset, then come down for a fountain show and dinner beside the lake. If you are short of time, our Dubai stopover guide explains how to fit Downtown into a layover, and the Dubai itinerary shows how to balance the Burj Khalifa day with Old Dubai, the beach and the desert. Before you fly, a policy from our guide to travel insurance from Nepal is worth having, especially when travelling with older parents.

If you would rather have flights, hotel, transfers and a Burj Khalifa slot arranged together, browse our Dubai tour packages and choose the style of trip that suits your family.

Frequently asked questions

How many floors does the Burj Khalifa have?

The Burj Khalifa has 163 floors above ground and one below ground, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat and Britannica. Visitors can reach levels 124 and 125 (At the Top), level 148 (At the Top SKY) and levels 152 to 154 (the lounge). Other counts you see online usually include or exclude spire levels.

Which floor is the Burj Khalifa observation deck on?

The main Burj Khalifa observation deck, At the Top, is on levels 124 and 125, about 452 to 456 metres up, with indoor decks and an outdoor terrace. The higher At the Top SKY deck is on level 148 at about 555 metres, and the premium lounge occupies levels 152, 153 and 154 at about 585 metres.

Is the higher Burj Khalifa SKY deck worth it?

At the Top SKY on level 148 of the Burj Khalifa is worth it if you value short queues, a seated lounge with refreshments, and a guided visit, for example on a honeymoon or with elderly parents. The view is higher but similar in feel to levels 124 and 125, and SKY guests get up to about 30 minutes on level 148.

What is the best time to visit the Burj Khalifa?

The best time to visit the Burj Khalifa is late afternoon, entering about two hours before sunset, as the official At the Top FAQ suggests. You see the city by day, the sunset and the lights coming on. November to March gives the clearest views. Early morning slots are a good, quieter alternative.

Do you need to book the Burj Khalifa in advance?

Booking the Burj Khalifa in advance is not compulsory, but it is strongly advised. Tickets are timed and sunset and weekend slots in the cool season often sell out days ahead. Tickets are valid only for the date and time shown, and the official terms accept cancellations only up to 24 hours before the visit.

Where is the Burj Khalifa entrance?

The Burj Khalifa visitor entrance for At the Top is inside The Dubai Mall, on the lower ground floor, at the gate near the Burj Khalifa lifts. The nearest metro is Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on the Red Line, linked to the mall by a covered bridge. Taxis drop off at The Dubai Mall entrances.

Can you see the Dubai Fountain show from the top of the Burj Khalifa?

Yes, you can see the Dubai Fountain from the Burj Khalifa decks facing Burj Lake, but from over 450 metres it looks small and you lose the music. Evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm, so most visitors watch one from above and another from the promenade.

Is the Burj Khalifa open during Ramadan?

The Burj Khalifa's At the Top deck has stayed open during Ramadan in past years, usually with changed hours, sometimes running later into the night. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting. Check the official booking calendar for your exact date, as fountain show times can also change.

Are strollers and wheelchairs allowed at the Burj Khalifa?

Wheelchairs are welcome: the official FAQ says the whole Burj Khalifa At the Top experience is wheelchair accessible. Strollers are not taken up; they go into the luggage room near the entrance with backpacks and shopping bags. The Dubai Mall lists wheelchairs and baby strollers among its guest services.

How long does a Burj Khalifa visit take?

A Burj Khalifa visit takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on average, according to the official At the Top FAQ, and longer at peak times. Add 15 to 20 minutes to find the entrance inside The Dubai Mall, and extra time if you plan to stay for the Dubai Fountain shows afterwards.

Burj Khalifa ma kati talla samma jana painchha?

Burj Khalifa ma jamma 163 talla chhan. Sadharan At the Top ticket le 124 ra 125 talla samma, SKY ticket le 148 talla samma, ra lounge ticket le 152 dekhi 154 talla samma jana painchha.
