Short answer: Genting Highlands is a mountain resort on the Pahang and Selangor border, roughly an hour's drive north-east of Kuala Lumpur, with its hilltop at about 1,800 metres above sea level. Most visitors come for three things: the cable car ride up (the Awana Skyway or the Genting Skyway), the Genting SkyWorlds outdoor theme park and the indoor parks, and the cool, often misty weather, with average temperatures of roughly 12°C to 22°C instead of the low 30s you get in KL. It works as a long day trip from the city, but an overnight stay is easier on families and lets you see the hill when the fog lifts.
This guide covers getting up the hill, both cable cars, park opening days, weather and what to wear. It lists no ticket prices, which change often, and does not cover the casino. Hours and schedules below were checked on the operators' own sites on 2 November 2026.
Where is Genting Highlands and how high is it?
Genting Highlands (often searched as Genting Highland, Malaysia) sits on Mount Ulu Kali in the Titiwangsa Mountains, the range that runs down the middle of Peninsular Malaysia. The resort straddles two states: the eastern side falls in Bentong District of Pahang and the western slopes in Hulu Selangor District of Selangor. The hilltop resort area is at about 1,800 metres (around 5,900 feet), and Resorts World Genting itself describes the resort as 6,000 feet above sea level.
The resort was the idea of the businessman Lim Goh Tong, who conceived it in 1963 and co-founded Genting Highlands Berhad in 1965. A private access road was built between 1965 and 1969, and the resort opened to the public in 1971, according to the Genting Highlands entry on Wikipedia. Today the whole hill is branded Resorts World Genting, run by Genting Malaysia, and it includes hotels, a large indoor mall called SkyAvenue, theme parks, a casino and a mid-hill outlet mall. If you are building a wider route, our round-up of the best places to visit in Malaysia shows how Genting compares with Cameron Highlands, Penang, Langkawi and the islands.

A useful comparison for readers from Nepal: the Kathmandu valley floor sits at roughly 1,300 to 1,400 metres, so the top of Genting is only a few hundred metres higher than Kathmandu. If you have lived in or visited Kathmandu, the thinner air at Genting will feel familiar rather than dramatic. What will feel different is the dampness, the fast-moving cloud and the sudden drop in temperature after the heat of Kuala Lumpur.
How do you get to Genting Highlands from Kuala Lumpur?
The simplest public route is an express coach from KL Sentral or Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) to the mid-hill terminal at Sky Sentral, then the Awana Skyway cable car to the top. You can also take a coach from Terminal Bersepadu Gombak, Pekeliling or Pudu Sentral, book an e-hailing car such as Grab, drive yourself, or join an organised tour. Most routes end at the same mid-hill terminal next to Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, so the last stretch is almost always by cable car or resort shuttle.
A note on names, because they have changed more than once. The mid-hill bus and cable car hub was long called Awana Bus Terminal. In October 2024 the resort renamed it Genting Highlands Premium Outlets Terminal (GHPO Terminal), and the current Awana Skyway page now calls it Sky Sentral. You may see all three names on signs, tickets and booking sites, and they refer to the same place. Similarly, the Genting Skyway's lower station at Gohtong Jaya has reopened as Gohtong Sentral.

Checked: 2 November 2026, source: Resorts World Genting express bus page, which also lists AeroBus departures from KL Sentral and Pekeliling. The resort says schedules can change without notice, so confirm the day's departures before you go.
The operator does not publish a fixed journey time for the coaches. In practice, allow at least an hour from the city to the mid-hill terminal, and noticeably more on Friday evenings, weekends and Malaysian public holidays, when the single access road can back up. Then add the cable car ride and any queue at the cable car station.
Which KL terminal is easiest to reach?
- KL Sentral is the main rail hub. The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop from KLIA Terminal 1 to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes, every 20 minutes for most of the day, according to KLIA Ekspres. KL Sentral is also station 15 on the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, per MyRapid.
- TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) is the big southern bus terminal, integrated with Bandar Tasik Selatan station. The KLIA Transit airport train stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, which makes TBS a handy option if you are coming from the airport and catching one of the AeroBus departures.
- Terminal Bersepadu Gombak (TBG) is the newer bus terminal next to Gombak LRT station, the northern end of the Kelana Jaya Line. The Resorts World Genting bus counter that used to be at Gombak LRT moved to TBG from 1 July 2025, according to the resort's express bus page.
Driving, Grab and the road charge
Most cars reach Genting by leaving the Kuala Lumpur to Karak Expressway at Genting Sempah and climbing Jalan Genting Highlands, a private road of about 25.5 km that was built in the 1960s. A public notice from the authorised road operator, Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, says that from 28 May 2026 most vehicles pay a road charge on entering Jalan Genting Highlands, collected at two points: the Genting Highlands entry at Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya entry at the Gohtong Jaya roundabout. Motorcycles and emergency vehicles are exempt. If you hire a Grab or a taxi, ask whether the road charge is included in the quoted fare.
Checked: 2 November 2026, source: Lingkaran Cekap public notice, 25 May 2026.
The upper road is steep and winding, and visibility can drop sharply in cloud. If you are not used to mountain driving, a coach or an e-hailing car is the calmer choice.
Coming from Nepal
Flights from Kathmandu land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), and our guide to flights from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur covers the airlines and terminals. From the airport you can either take a direct coach to Genting from KLIA Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, or ride the KLIA Ekspres into KL Sentral and continue from there. Most first-time visitors spend a night or two in Kuala Lumpur first. Before you fly, note that Malaysia uses the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) for most foreign visitors; see our visa information for Malaysia for the current rules for your passport.
What are the Awana Skyway and Genting Skyway cable cars like?

Genting has two cable cars, and both carry you from a mid-hill station up to the hilltop resort. The Awana Skyway is the newer, busier line: it runs about 2.8 km from Sky Sentral to SkyAvenue in about 10 minutes, with a free stop at Chin Swee Caves Temple, and it operates from 7am to 11pm. The Genting Skyway is the older, longer line: it runs about 3.4 km from Gohtong Sentral to the Resorts World station in about 15 minutes with no stops, and it operates from 9am to 7pm.
Both lines are also listed with these hours on the official Genting SkyWorlds park hours page (linked in the next section), checked on 2 November 2026. For years the Genting Skyway mainly served as a backup; since 1 October 2024 the resort has run both lines at the same time.

What the ride itself is like
On a clear morning the Awana Skyway climbs about 620 metres over dense montane rainforest. The cabins are enclosed. Halfway up, the Chin Swee Caves Temple pagoda and the giant Buddha statue appear on the hillside, and you can step off at Chin Swee station and reboard later on the same ticket. Near the top you get a bird's eye view of Genting SkyWorlds before gliding into the station at SkyAvenue.
On a cloudy day, which is common, you may see almost nothing beyond the next pylon.
The glass floor gondolas are on the Awana Skyway only. The resort says online tickets for them must be bought one day before the ride, and they board from a separate lane (Lane B). Only baby strollers are allowed in the glass floor cabins.
Rules that affect families and luggage
- Children under 90 cm tall ride free on both cable cars, per the official pages.
- Guests aged 16 and under must be accompanied and supervised by someone with a valid ticket.
- Each passenger may bring one aircraft cabin-size bag; oversized baggage costs extra. There is baggage storage at Sky Sentral (Level 2) and a 24-hour service at Gohtong Sentral (Level G).
- On the Genting Skyway, wheelchairs and strollers must be folded before boarding. The Awana Skyway's standard gondolas have wheelchair and stroller access, and only baby strollers are allowed in its glass floor cabins.
- Pets, smoking and vaping are not allowed.
- Take the same cable car back down that you came up on if you need to return to the same bus terminal. A shuttle connects Gohtong Sentral and Sky Sentral if you get it wrong.
Fog, wind and maintenance closures
Both cable car lines close for scheduled system maintenance from time to time, and the official pages carry a "Scheduled System Maintenance" banner without fixed dates. The resort's rule is that when one line is closed for maintenance, the other carries passengers; both official pages say service moves to the other line's station, about a 15-minute drive away. Neither official page publishes a fixed rule for closing in bad weather, so in a thunderstorm or strong wind expect possible delays and follow staff instructions.
Three practical habits help:
- Check the official Awana Skyway and Genting Skyway pages and the Resorts World Genting app on the morning you travel, and again before you head back down.
- Ride up before midday. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in Malaysia, and the view is often clearer earlier in the day.
- Know your fallback. If the Genting Skyway stops at 7pm, the Awana Skyway runs until 11pm, and resort shuttles run between the mid-hill terminals.
What is there to do at Genting SkyWorlds and the indoor parks?
Genting SkyWorlds is the main outdoor theme park at the hilltop, with nine themed worlds built around film properties such as Ice Age, Rio, Epic, Robots, Planet of the Apes, Independence Day and Night at the Museum, as credited on the park's site. It is open daily from 10am to 6pm but closed every Tuesday, except on Malaysian national public holidays and school holidays. Indoors, Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park offers more than 20 rides from 11am to 9pm, which makes it the main rainy-day and evening option.

Genting SkyWorlds: what to know before you go
The park covers about 26 acres and opened as Genting SkyWorlds on 8 February 2022, after a long redevelopment of the old outdoor park. Its nine worlds are Studio Plaza, Eagle Mountain, Central Park, Rio, Andromeda Base, Liberty Lane, Epic, Robots Rivet Town and Ice Age, as listed on the Genting SkyWorlds FAQ. The resort's own first-timer tips single out rides such as Samba Gliders, Acorn Adventure, Independence Day: Defiance, Terraform Tower Challenge, Invasion of the Planet of the Apes and Epic Voyage to Moonhaven.
- Tuesday closure: the most common planning mistake. If your only free day in Malaysia is a Tuesday outside a holiday period, plan for Skytropolis and the cable car instead.
- Virtual Queue: link your tickets in the official app and you can reserve slots on selected rides before you enter.
- Cashless park: the park accepts cards, QR payments, e-wallets and the resort's own GeM wallet, not cash.
- Re-entry: allowed after leaving, using facial recognition at the gate.
- Food rules: no outside food and drinks inside the park. Vegetarian dishes are on the menu at most of the park's restaurants, according to the official FAQ.
- Strollers: available to rent at Guest Services in Studio Plaza.
- Children under 90 cm: enter free, per the FAQ.
What happens at SkyWorlds when it rains?
The park does not close in bad weather, but outdoor and larger rides may be temporarily shut during rain or strong wind, and standard tickets are non-refundable. To soften this, the park runs a Rainy Day Guarantee: if adverse weather lasts for an hour or more continuously during opening hours, eligible ticket holders get one complimentary return visit, valid for 12 months. You need the official app with notifications on, your original tickets and receipts, and your passport or Malaysian NRIC when you claim. Annual passes, multi-day tickets, combo tickets and complimentary tickets are excluded.
How often does it trigger? The official page lists the dates the guarantee was activated: 12 days between 24 November 2025 and 25 October 2026, three of them in October 2026 (12, 23 and 25 October). So most rainy days at Genting do not stop the park for a full hour, but late-year visits carry more risk.

Skytropolis and the indoor attractions
Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park was revamped and reopened in 2018 and covers about 400,000 square feet with more than 20 rides, according to the resort. It is the most dependable option for a foggy or stormy afternoon, and it stays open later than SkyWorlds. Skytropolis follows its own operating calendar, with longer hours on peak days, so check the calendar linked from the official park hours page.
SkyAvenue, the mall at the top of the Awana Skyway, is where most people eat, warm up and shop. Skytropolis is also at the hilltop, so on a wet day you can spend hours indoors. Vision City Video Games Park and Genting Bowl are smaller extras for teenagers and groups.
The resort also has a casino in a separate area. None of the attractions in this guide require you to enter it.
What is the weather like at Genting Highlands and what should you wear?

Genting Highlands is cool all year: typical daytime temperatures run from about 14°C to 22°C, average lows sit near 12°C to 13°C, and readings rarely go above 25°C or below 10°C. That is around 10°C cooler than Kuala Lumpur, where average highs are about 32°C. It is also wet, with about 2,460 mm of rain a year and frequent fog, so the right outfit is light layers, a warm top and a rain jacket, not a heavy winter coat.
A note on the data, so you know how far to trust it. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) does not run a weather station on the Genting hilltop. When unusually cold readings were reported in January 2018, MetMalaysia's director-general Alui Bahari told Malay Mail:
"Unfortunately we are unable to clarify if it is the lowest temperature recorded there, due to the absence of a monitoring station up the hill."
So the Genting figures below are modelled climate averages from Climate-Data.org, as cited on Wikipedia, while the Kuala Lumpur figures are official MetMalaysia climate normals for 1971 to 2000, published through the World Meteorological Organization's World Weather Information Service. Treat the Genting numbers as a good guide to what to pack, not as precise readings.

Two patterns matter for planning:
- June to August are the driest months at both Genting and KL, which usually means more chances of clear views from the cable car.
- November and December are the wettest months at Genting in the modelled data, with October and April close behind. This matters for many Nepali travellers, because Dashain and Tihar holidays usually fall in October or November. You can still have a good trip; just plan indoor back-ups and ride the cable car early.

What to wear at Genting
| Situation | What it feels like | What to wear or carry |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving KL in the morning | Hot and humid, about 30°C or more | T-shirt and light trousers or a skirt, with your warm layer in a bag |
| Hilltop, sunny midday | Mild, around 20°C, strong sun through thin air | Light long sleeves, sunglasses, sunscreen |
| Hilltop, fog or drizzle | Damp and chilly, mid-teens | Fleece or light jacket, waterproof shell, closed shoes |
| Evening and early morning | Coolest time, often low to mid-teens | Warm jumper or a light down jacket for children and elderly relatives |
| Theme park in rain | Wet, slippery paths, wind on high rides | Hooded rain jacket or poncho (umbrellas are awkward on rides), quick-dry clothes, spare socks |
| Indoors (SkyAvenue, Skytropolis) | Comfortable, sometimes heavily air-conditioned | Same layers; easy to take off |
| Chin Swee Caves Temple | Exposed terraces, can be windy | Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, warm layer |
If you know Kathmandu, think of what you would wear on an autumn evening there, and add a proper rain jacket.
Is Genting Highlands good for families?
Yes, Genting Highlands is one of the easiest family day outs from Kuala Lumpur. The cable car ride itself delights most children, the indoor parks are a reliable rainy-day plan, the hilltop is compact, with the mall, hotels and parks close together, and the cool weather means fewer overheated, tired children than in the city. The main things to plan around are the SkyWorlds Tuesday closure, weekend and holiday crowds, and the chill for very young children and elderly relatives.
For wider family planning across Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and the islands, our guide to travelling around Malaysia with children covers hotels, transport and pacing.
Which Genting attractions suit which ages?
| Group | Works well | Think twice | Practical note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Babies and toddlers | Cable car, SkyAvenue, strawberry farm, gentle Skytropolis rides | Long days at SkyWorlds | Check stroller rules for your cable car (folding is required on the Genting Skyway); stroller rental is available inside SkyWorlds |
| Children about 4 to 8 | SkyWorlds family rides (Ice Age, Rio, Robots areas), Skytropolis, glass floor gondola | Big thrill rides with height limits | Children under 90 cm enter SkyWorlds free; check ride height rules in the park app |
| Children about 9 to 15 | Full SkyWorlds day, Vision City, Genting Bowl | Nothing in particular | Children aged 16 and under must be accompanied on the cable cars |
| Teens and young adults | Thrill rides, glass floor gondola, outlets | Nothing in particular | Book Virtual Queue slots early |
| Grandparents | Cable car, Chin Swee Caves Temple, SkyAvenue, outlets | Long queues in the cold, steep temple stairs | See the altitude note below |
| Mixed multi-generation groups | Split the day: thrill seekers at SkyWorlds, others at the temple or outlets | Trying to keep everyone together all day | Agree a meeting point in SkyAvenue and a cable car time |
Does the altitude affect elderly visitors?
For most healthy people, including older travellers, Genting's altitude is mild. The CDC's Yellow Book, the US government's travel health reference, says any unacclimatised traveller going to a sleeping altitude of 2,450 metres or more is at risk of altitude illness, sometimes at lower altitudes, and Genting's hilltop is about 1,800 metres. Some people notice slight breathlessness on stairs, but Genting sits well below that threshold.
The CDC Yellow Book also advises that travellers with underlying medical conditions, even well-controlled ones, should consult a doctor familiar with high-altitude medicine before travelling to altitude. If a relative has a heart or lung condition, ask their doctor before the trip. For grandparents, the cold and damp can be more tiring than the height: pack a warm layer, take the temple stairs slowly and keep medicines in hand luggage.
Is Genting Highlands better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
A day trip to Genting Highlands works well if you mainly want the cable car ride, a few hours at one theme park and a meal. An overnight stay is better if you want both SkyWorlds and the indoor parks, are travelling with young children or grandparents, or are visiting in the wet months, because it gives you a second chance at clear morning views and removes the pressure of the last coach.
| Factor | Day trip from KL | One night at Genting |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the hill | Several hours, depending on traffic and coach times | A full afternoon plus the next morning |
| Theme parks | One park realistically | SkyWorlds and Skytropolis without rushing |
| Chance of clear views | One chance, depending on the weather that day | Two chances, including early morning |
| Travel strain | Coach or car both ways in one day | Split across two days |
| Luggage | Day bag only | Cabin-size bag per person on the cable car; extra storage at the terminals |
| Weekends and holidays | Road and cable car queues eat into your day | You can go up before the crowds and down after them |
| Elderly relatives | Tiring | Much easier |
| Best for | Couples, solo travellers, Malaysia-based visitors on a day off | Families, multi-generation groups, theme park fans |
If your Malaysia trip is short, a common approach is to base yourself in Kuala Lumpur and give Genting one day. Our guide to things to do in Kuala Lumpur helps you decide what else fits around it.
For Nepalis living and working in Malaysia
If you are a Nepali living or working in Malaysia and planning Genting on a day off, a few points help:
- If your day off is Tuesday, check whether it is a public holiday or school holiday before planning on SkyWorlds, because the park is otherwise closed that day.
- If your rest day falls on a weekend, expect bigger crowds. Starting early from KL Sentral, TBS or TBG makes a big difference.
- Carry your passport or other valid ID; the Rainy Day Guarantee claim, for example, needs an original passport or NRIC.
- Agree on a return bus before you go up the hill, especially for larger groups.
What else is nearby, such as Chin Swee Caves Temple and the premium outlets?
The best extras on the Genting hill are Chin Swee Caves Temple, a large Chinese temple complex on the Awana Skyway route; Genting Highlands Premium Outlets, an open-air outlet mall beside Sky Sentral; the Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms at Gohtong Jaya; and the new Gohtong Sentral hub with the Eufloria glasshouse gardens at the Genting Skyway's lower station. All are within the resort area and easy to combine with the cable car.
Chin Swee Caves Temple

Chin Swee Caves Temple sits on the hillside below the hilltop resort, and the Awana Skyway stops right beside it. It is dedicated to the deity Chin Swee, named after the ancient Chinese monk Qingshui, whose ancestral temple is in Anxi, Fujian province, China. The temple is known for its nine-storey pagoda, a giant Buddha statue and a series of sculptures depicting the Ten Chambers of Hell, which some younger children may find frightening. According to The Star, it was registered as the Chin Swee Caves Temple on 4 November 1976; the resort dates the opening of the temple complex to 1994.
Explaining its origins, as reported by The Star in September 2026, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of the Chin Swee Caves Temple Building Society, said:
"Following the completion of the first hotel and casino, my father built a temple at the site in honour of the deity."
In February 2026 the temple unveiled a new self-guided Chin Swee Caves Temple Galleria at the Sky Terrace, telling the temple's story, along with a glass lotus installation in front of the giant Buddha and an indoor meditation and exhibition space called Kimhua Hall. The galleria is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm, according to the resort's press release of 22 February 2026. The Star also reported that a 50th anniversary prayer assembly was planned at the temple from 23 to 30 October 2026.

- Get off the Awana Skyway at Chin Swee station on the way up or down; it is included in the same ticket.
- Dress modestly and speak quietly in the prayer halls.
- The terraces are exposed. On clear days the views over the forest are wide; in fog you will be standing inside a cloud, which has its own atmosphere.
- Chin Swee Vegetarian Cuisine, at the temple, is described by the resort as the only fully vegetarian restaurant at Resorts World Genting.
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets
Genting Highlands Premium Outlets is an open-air outlet centre at mid-hill, right beside the Sky Sentral bus and cable car terminal, so most coach passengers walk past it anyway. It was opened in 2017 by Genting Simon, a joint venture between Genting Plantations and Simon Property Group, and its official FAQ lists 150 designer and name-brand outlet stores, open daily from 10am to 10pm. It is about 45 minutes' drive from Kuala Lumpur, per the operator.
The outlets are a sensible stop on the way back down, while you wait for your coach. Being open-air, the mall can be cool and wet, and brand lists change, so check the official directory if you want a specific store.
Genting Strawberry Leisure Farms
The strawberry farm at Gohtong Jaya is a small, low-key stop that young children enjoy. According to the Selangor tourism listing, visitors can pick their own strawberries, walk through a lavender garden, and buy strawberry jams, juices and snacks. Opening hours listed online are several years old, so confirm them locally before making a special trip.
Gohtong Sentral and Eufloria
Gohtong Sentral is the refreshed transport hub at the Genting Skyway's lower station, reopened with new shops and cafés, and an opening promotion running from 1 May 2026. A covered walkway links it to Eufloria Gardens and Sculpture Park, which Resorts World Genting describes as Malaysia's largest floral glasshouse. Drivers can park at Gohtong Sentral and ride the Genting Skyway to the top, and a resort shuttle runs from Sky Sentral. How should you plan a Genting Highlands visit, including from Nepal?
Plan a Genting Highlands visit around three checks: the day of the week (SkyWorlds closes on Tuesdays outside holidays), the weather (go up early, and have an indoor back-up), and your way back down (note the last convenient coach and the cable car closing times).
A simple planning checklist
- Pick your day. Avoid non-holiday Tuesdays if SkyWorlds is the main reason for going, and avoid weekends and Malaysian public holidays if you dislike queues.
- Check the official pages on the morning you go. Look for maintenance notices on the cable car pages and any calendar changes for Skytropolis.
- Book park tickets through official or authorised channels if you want the Rainy Day Guarantee to apply.
- Note your return. Genting Skyway runs to 7pm, Awana Skyway to 11pm, and the listed coaches from Sky Sentral to KL Sentral run until 10:30pm.
Food, including vegetarian options
Food at Genting is mostly in SkyAvenue and the hotels at the hilltop, with Malaysian, Chinese, Indian, Western and fast-food outlets. For vegetarian travellers, including many from Nepal and India, there are real choices. Resorts World Genting's own vegetarian dining guide names Jom Makan on Level G of SkyAvenue (Indian vegetarian), Jom Makan Street Food on Level 4 of SkyAvenue, Spice Garden (Indian and Middle Eastern) at Genting Grand Hotel, and Chin Swee Vegetarian Cuisine near the temple. Inside SkyWorlds, most restaurants have vegetarian dishes.
If you are strictly vegetarian or avoid eggs, onion or garlic, ask at the counter, since "vegetarian" can mean different things from one kitchen to the next. For the bigger picture of Malaysian dishes and how to order vegetarian versions, see our Malaysian food guide.
Fitting Genting into a Malaysia trip
For most visitors, Genting is one day, or one night, within a trip that also covers Kuala Lumpur and perhaps Penang, Langkawi or Malacca. Our complete Malaysia travel guide covers how the regions fit together, getting around, and what first-time visitors from South Asia most often ask about. For travellers who would rather have transport, hotels and cable car tickets arranged as part of a wider trip, the options are listed under Malaysia tour packages.
A final honest note: Genting is a built, commercial resort, not a wild mountain. Go for cool air, theme parks and cloud forest views on a good morning; if you want quiet hill walks and tea estates, Cameron Highlands may suit you better.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Genting Highlands from KL?
Genting Highlands is roughly an hour's drive north-east of Kuala Lumpur, and the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets operator quotes about 45 minutes in clear traffic. Allow longer on weekends and Malaysian public holidays. By express coach from KL Sentral, TBS or Gombak, plan for at least an hour to the mid-hill terminal, then about 10 to 15 minutes by cable car to the hilltop.
Is it cold in Genting Highlands?
Genting Highlands is cool rather than cold. Typical daytime temperatures run from about 14°C to 22°C, with average lows near 12°C to 13°C, and readings rarely drop below 10°C. It feels colder in fog, wind and rain, especially in the evening. A fleece or light jacket and a rain shell are enough for most visitors; heavy winter coats are not needed.
Is the Awana Skyway safe?
The Awana Skyway is a modern enclosed gondola built by Leitner Ropeways and in service since December 2016. It has scheduled maintenance periods, during which passengers are moved to the Genting Skyway, and storms can cause delays. Follow staff instructions, keep children seated, and check the official Resorts World Genting page for maintenance notices on the day you travel.
Does the cable car close in bad weather?
The official cable car pages publish no fixed weather-closure rule, so fog and light rain are part of a normal Genting visit, but thunderstorms and strong wind can cause delays. The lines also close for scheduled maintenance; when one is shut, the other carries passengers. Ride up before midday, check the Awana Skyway and Genting Skyway pages on the morning of travel, and leave time for delays.
Is Genting SkyWorlds open every day?
No. Genting SkyWorlds opens daily from 10am to 6pm but closes every Tuesday, except on Malaysian national public holidays and school holidays, according to the official park hours page checked on 2 November 2026. Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park follows its own calendar, opening from 11am, and is a useful alternative on Tuesdays and rainy days.
Can you visit Genting without going to the casino?
Yes. The casino at Resorts World Genting is in a separate area, and none of the main attractions require you to enter it. The cable cars, Genting SkyWorlds, Skytropolis, SkyAvenue mall, Chin Swee Caves Temple and Genting Highlands Premium Outlets are all visited independently, which is why most families come to Genting for the parks and the cool air.
Is Genting good for small kids?
Genting Highlands is good for small children if you plan for the cool weather and crowds. The cable car, Skytropolis family rides, the strawberry farm and SkyWorlds family areas such as Ice Age and Rio suit young children. Children under 90 cm enter SkyWorlds and ride the cable cars free. Strollers must be folded on the Genting Skyway, and rental strollers are available inside SkyWorlds.
Does the altitude affect elderly visitors?
For most healthy older visitors, Genting's altitude of about 1,800 metres is mild. The CDC Yellow Book says unacclimatised travellers sleeping at 2,450 metres or more are at risk of altitude illness. Mild breathlessness on stairs is possible. Anyone with a heart, lung or other medical condition should ask their doctor before travelling, and should pack warm layers, since the cold and damp can be more tiring than the height.
What should I pack for Genting?
Pack for a cool, wet hill station: a fleece or light jacket, a hooded rain jacket or poncho, long trousers, closed shoes with grip, and spare socks. Add sunscreen and sunglasses for bright spells, modest clothing for Chin Swee Caves Temple, any personal medicines, a card that works abroad, and your passport or ID. Keep luggage to one cabin-size bag per person for the cable car.
Is there vegetarian food at Genting?
Yes. Resorts World Genting lists several vegetarian-friendly outlets, including Jom Makan on Level G of SkyAvenue for Indian vegetarian food, Spice Garden at Genting Grand Hotel, and Chin Swee Vegetarian Cuisine near the temple, which the resort calls its only fully vegetarian restaurant. Most restaurants inside Genting SkyWorlds also have vegetarian dishes. Ask staff if you avoid eggs, onion or garlic.
What is the difference between Genting Skyway and Awana Skyway?
Both cable cars climb to the Genting hilltop. The Awana Skyway runs about 2.8 km from Sky Sentral, next to the premium outlets, to SkyAvenue in about 10 minutes, stops at Chin Swee Caves Temple, has glass floor cabins and operates from 7am to 11pm. The Genting Skyway runs about 3.4 km from Gohtong Sentral in about 15 minutes, non-stop, from 9am to 7pm.
Genting Highlands jana kati din chahinchha?
For most visitors, one full day is enough to ride the cable car, spend several hours at one theme park and visit Chin Swee Caves Temple or the outlets. Families, theme park fans and anyone visiting in the wet months of October to December usually prefer one night on the hill, which allows both SkyWorlds and Skytropolis and a second chance at clear morning views.
