Short answer: Yes, you can fly non-stop from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur. Four airlines run the route from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA): Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines, with roughly 30 or more departures a week between them in late October 2026. The Nepal to Malaysia flight time is about 4 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 55 minutes in the air, and the return from Kuala Lumpur takes about the same. All four airlines use KLIA Terminal 1, Malaysia is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal, and the KLIA Ekspres train reaches KL Sentral in about 28 minutes. (Checked: 27 Oct 2026, airline schedules on FlightStats and Trip.com, KAYAK route data, KLIA Ekspres.)
This guide is written for Nepali travellers heading to Malaysia on holiday, families visiting relatives who work in Malaysia, and anyone from abroad routing through Kathmandu. It covers who flies, when the flights leave, which terminal you land at, what to expect at both airports, how to get into the city and what a typical economy fare looks like in each season. Is there a direct flight from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?
Yes. Kuala Lumpur is one of the busiest non-stop international routes from Kathmandu, with at least one flight every day and several on most days. All of the scheduled non-stop flights land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), about 57 km by rail from KL Sentral in the city, not at the older Subang airport (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport).
The route is busy for a simple reason. Malaysia has long been one of the main destinations for Nepali migrant workers, so there is steady traffic of workers, their families and visiting relatives all year. On top of that, Kuala Lumpur is a popular first international holiday for Nepali couples and families, and it is the most common connecting point for Bali, Vietnam and Australia. That mix keeps the schedule full even in months when holiday demand is low.
A "direct" flight here really is non-stop: the aircraft does not land anywhere between Kathmandu and Kuala Lumpur. If a booking site shows a much longer journey on the same airline, check whether it is a one-stop itinerary via Delhi, Dhaka, Bangkok or a Gulf hub instead.
How far is Malaysia from Nepal?
The straight-line (great-circle) distance between Kathmandu airport and Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about 3,270 km, or about 2,030 miles. That is our calculation from the two airports' coordinates, and it matches the 2,033 miles KAYAK lists for the route. The aircraft flies a little further than this because of air routes over the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, which is part of why the scheduled time is close to five hours rather than four.
| From Kathmandu to | Approximate straight-line distance | Non-stop flight? |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur (KUL) | About 3,270 km | Yes, four airlines |
| Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu | Further than KL | No; connect in Kuala Lumpur |
If your final stop is Penang, Langkawi or Malaysian Borneo, you fly to Kuala Lumpur first and connect onto a domestic flight. Our Malaysia travel guide explains how the peninsula and Borneo differ, so you can decide where to go before you choose a flight.
Which airlines fly Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?

Four airlines fly the route non-stop: Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air Malaysia (both Malaysian), and Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines (both Nepali). Batik Air runs the most flights, Malaysia Airlines is the main full-service option with onward connections across its network, and the two Nepali airlines add daytime and late-night choices.
The table below is a snapshot of the late October 2026 schedule. Flight times move with the seasons, and the winter schedule that starts at the end of October can shift departure times, so treat it as a guide to the pattern, not a timetable.
| Airline | Flight (KTM to KUL) | Leaves Kathmandu | Arrives Kuala Lumpur | Approx. flights a week | KLIA terminal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Batik Air Malaysia | OD181 | 21:25 (overnight) | 04:20 next day | Daily | Terminal 1 |
| Batik Air Malaysia | OD183 | 13:50 | 20:50 | Several days a week; some cancellations seen | Terminal 1 |
| Malaysia Airlines | MH171 | 13:00 | 20:10 | About 4 to 5 | Terminal 1 |
| Malaysia Airlines | MH115 | 22:45 (overnight) | 05:45 next day | About 4 to 5 | Terminal 1 |
| Himalaya Airlines | H9890 | 10:15 | 17:15 | About 5 to 7 | Terminal 1 |
| Nepal Airlines | RA415 | 22:20 (overnight) | 05:10 next day | About 2 to 3; recently Sun, Tue, Thu | Terminal 1 |
Checked: 27 Oct 2026. Sources: FlightStats flight pages for MH115 and MH171; Trip.com and Avionio flight status pages for OD181, OD183, H9890 and RA415; KAYAK route pages for weekly counts (Batik Air 18, Malaysia Airlines 10, Himalaya Airlines up to 7 a week in its recent data). Times are local. Confirm on the airline's own website before you book.
Malaysia Airlines
Malaysia Airlines is Malaysia's national carrier and a member of the oneworld alliance. On this route it flies a Boeing 737 MAX 8, with a midday departure (MH171) that lands in Kuala Lumpur in the evening and a late-night departure (MH115) that lands just before dawn. Its main advantage is the network beyond Kuala Lumpur: you can buy one ticket from Kathmandu to Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Perth, Sydney or Melbourne, with your bag checked through to the end. Fare brands differ in what they include, so read the baggage line before you pay.
Batik Air Malaysia
Batik Air Malaysia (flight code OD, formerly Malindo Air) has the most frequent schedule, with a daily overnight flight (OD181) and a daytime flight (OD183) on several days of the week; recent flight data shows the daytime flight on a Boeing 737 MAX 8. In our 27 October check, the daytime OD183 showed cancellations on some dates and long delays on others, so if your plans are tight, the daily overnight flight has the steadier record. Batik Air also connects from Kuala Lumpur to many cities in Southeast Asia and Australia. What is included in the fare depends on the fare type, so compare carefully.
Himalaya Airlines
Himalaya Airlines is a Nepali airline flying an Airbus A320 on this route. Its morning departure (H9890, recently around 10:15) lands in Kuala Lumpur late in the afternoon, which suits families with children and elderly parents who would rather not fly overnight. Recent flight history shows it running five to seven times a week, though not on a perfectly fixed pattern, so check your exact date.
Nepal Airlines
Nepal Airlines, the national flag carrier, flies an Airbus A320 to Kuala Lumpur two to three times a week, recently on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights. It is worth knowing that the airline's small fleet makes its schedule fragile. On 1 October 2026 Kantipur reported that four of Nepal Airlines' six aircraft were grounded and that a Thursday night flight to Malaysia was cancelled for lack of an aircraft. Recent October flights have operated, but if you choose Nepal Airlines, keep your phone number updated on the booking and check the flight status the day before.
Does AirAsia fly from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?
Not at the moment. AirAsia X flew Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu in the past, but no AirAsia flight appears on the Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur route in current schedule data (KAYAK, FlightStats and Trip.com, checked 27 Oct 2026). You will still meet AirAsia if you connect onward from Kuala Lumpur, because it is the biggest airline at KLIA Terminal 2. Check the AirAsia website if you see an announcement of a new Kathmandu service, because new routes are announced and launched often in this region.
One-stop alternatives
Booking sites also show one-stop itineraries, for example via Delhi on Air India or via Bangkok. They sometimes appear as the cheapest option on a search, but the total journey is usually several hours longer than the non-stop flight, and an Indian or Thai stop may bring its own transit rules. For most travellers going only to Kuala Lumpur, a non-stop flight is the simpler choice. If you have never changed planes before, our first-time flight tips explain how a connection works step by step.
How long is the flight from Nepal to Malaysia?
The scheduled Nepal to Malaysia flight time is about 4 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 55 minutes, depending on the airline and the departure. KAYAK lists an average of about 4 h 45 min for the non-stop route. Because Malaysia is 2 h 15 min ahead, your watch will show about 7 hours between leaving Kathmandu and landing in Kuala Lumpur, even though you spent less than 5 hours in the air.
| Direction | Flight | Departs (local) | Arrives (local) | Scheduled time in the air and on the ground |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kathmandu to KL | Nepal Airlines RA415 | 22:20 | 05:10 | About 4 h 35 min |
| Kathmandu to KL | Batik Air OD181 | 21:25 | 04:20 | About 4 h 40 min |
| Kathmandu to KL | Batik Air OD183 | 13:50 | 20:50 | About 4 h 45 min |
| Kathmandu to KL | Himalaya Airlines H9890 | 10:15 | 17:15 | About 4 h 45 min |
| Kathmandu to KL | Malaysia Airlines MH115 | 22:45 | 05:45 | About 4 h 45 min |
| Kathmandu to KL | Malaysia Airlines MH171 | 13:00 | 20:10 | About 4 h 55 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Batik Air OD182 | 18:10 | 20:35 | About 4 h 40 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Himalaya Airlines H9891 | 18:15 | 20:40 | About 4 h 40 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Nepal Airlines RA416 | 06:10 | 08:40 | About 4 h 45 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Malaysia Airlines MH114 | 19:15 | 21:45 | About 4 h 45 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Batik Air OD184 | 10:20 | 12:50 | About 4 h 45 min |
| KL to Kathmandu | Malaysia Airlines MH170 | 09:20 | 12:00 | About 4 h 55 min |
Checked: 27 Oct 2026. Block times calculated from scheduled local times on FlightStats (MH114, MH115, MH170, MH171) and Trip.com flight status pages (OD181 to OD184, H9890, H9891, RA415, RA416), allowing for the 2 h 15 min time difference. Actual times vary with wind, air traffic and delays.
Remember that the scheduled time includes taxiing at both ends. On a good day the flight can land early. On a bad day, delays at Kathmandu can add much more. In winter, morning fog sometimes holds aircraft arriving in Kathmandu, which can knock on to later departures, so check the flight status on the morning of travel.
Is the Malaysia to Nepal flight longer than Nepal to Malaysia?
Not by much. The scheduled times in both directions fall in the same band, roughly 4 h 40 min to 4 h 55 min, and the difference between airlines is bigger than the difference between directions. What does change is the clock. Flying Kathmandu to KL you "lose" 2 h 15 min, so a 4 h 45 min flight looks like 7 hours on the clock. Flying home you "gain" it back, so an evening departure from KL at 18:10 lands in Kathmandu at about 20:35, only about two and a half hours later by the clock.
Overnight or daytime departure: which suits you?
| Departure from Kathmandu | Lands in KL | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning (around 10:15) | Late afternoon | Families, elderly parents, first-time flyers; you reach the hotel at a normal check-in time | Morning traffic to the airport; plan to leave home early |
| Midday (around 13:00 to 13:50) | Evening, around 20:00 to 21:00 | Arriving in time for dinner; trains and e-hailing are running | Uses most of a day; afternoon delays at Kathmandu can push arrival late |
| Night (around 21:25 to 22:45) | Before dawn, around 04:20 to 05:45 | Saving a day of leave; connecting to early flights onward | Little sleep; you arrive before hotel check-in and, on the earliest flight, before the first airport train |
The overnight arrival deserves a word of warning. Batik Air's OD181 is scheduled to land at 04:20, and the first KLIA Ekspres train from Terminal 1 leaves at 05:00. By the time you clear immigration and collect bags you may be close to that time anyway, but a hotel will not usually let you into your room until the afternoon unless you book and pay for early check-in. Many travellers on the night flight either book the room from the night before, or plan a slow breakfast and a morning at a sight such as Batu Caves, which is busiest later in the day.
What is the time difference between Nepal and Malaysia?
Malaysia is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal. Malaysia runs on UTC+8 all year and Nepal on UTC+5:45, and neither country uses daylight saving time, so the gap never changes. When it is 12:00 noon in Kathmandu, it is 14:15 in Kuala Lumpur.
| Time in Kathmandu | Time in Kuala Lumpur | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 08:15 | Family in KL are already starting work |
| 12:00 | 14:15 | Lunch in KL is over |
| 18:00 | 20:15 | A good time to call relatives in Malaysia after their workday |
| 21:45 | 00:00 (midnight) | Too late for a call unless agreed |
The shift is small enough that most travellers feel only a little tired on the first morning. Change your phone and watch to Malaysian time as soon as you board, and plan the first day with that in mind.
Which KLIA terminal will you land at?

All four airlines that fly non-stop from Kathmandu (Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines) use KLIA Terminal 1. Terminal 2, the former klia2, is the home of AirAsia and its sister airlines. The two buildings are about 2 km apart, and the airport trains link them in about 3 minutes.
| Airline | KLIA terminal | Relevance from Kathmandu |
|---|---|---|
| Malaysia Airlines | Terminal 1 | Non-stop from Kathmandu; onward connections in T1 |
| Batik Air Malaysia | Terminal 1 | Non-stop from Kathmandu; onward connections in T1 |
| Himalaya Airlines | Terminal 1 | Non-stop from Kathmandu |
| Nepal Airlines | Terminal 1 | Non-stop from Kathmandu |
| AirAsia (including AirAsia X) | Terminal 2 | Onward flights only; no current Kathmandu service |
Checked: 27 Oct 2026. Arrival terminals from FlightStats and Trip.com flight status pages for each flight; AirAsia at Terminal 2 from KLIA terminal guides and KLIA Ekspres station names. Terminal allocations can change, so check the e-ticket and the airline's app.
Satellite gates and the Aerotrain
Terminal 1 has a main terminal building and a separate satellite building. Some flights from Kathmandu park at the main terminal piers, while others use the satellite (C gates); our check of recent arrivals showed both. If you land at the satellite, you ride the automated Aerotrain to the main terminal for immigration and baggage. Just follow the signs for Arrivals and Immigration and stay with the crowd from your flight.
Changing between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
The terminal question matters most when you mix airlines on separate tickets, for example Malaysia Airlines from Kathmandu and then AirAsia on to Bali. Moving from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 means leaving the airside area, which in turn means passing Malaysian immigration and collecting your bag. That is only possible if your passport allows you to enter Malaysia, and it takes time. Our Kathmandu to Bali flight guide explains this "self transfer trap" in detail.
What should you do at Kathmandu airport before departure?

Reach Tribhuvan International Airport about three hours before your Kuala Lumpur flight, and about four hours during the Dashain and Tihar rush. TIA's own passenger FAQ asks passengers to arrive normally three hours ahead and says ticket checking counters close at least one hour before departure. The night flights to Kuala Lumpur leave in a busy evening bank alongside Gulf and other Asian departures, so queues can build quickly.
The full step-by-step process, from the kerb to the gate, is in our Kathmandu airport international departure guide. Here is the short version for a Kuala Lumpur flight.
- Entrance check: show your passport and ticket at the terminal door. Only ticketed passengers go inside, so say goodbye to family at the forecourt.
- Check-in: find your airline's counter on the screens, drop your bag and read the bag tag. It should show KUL, or your final destination if you have one ticket onward.
- Embarkation card and immigration: fill in the paper embarkation card with a pen and keep the documents for your travel purpose in your hand, not in your checked bag.
- Security and gate: liquids in your cabin bag must be in containers of 100 ml or less inside one clear resealable bag. Power banks go in hand luggage, never in the checked bag.
Two Nepal-specific points are worth stressing. First, money exchange and ATMs at TIA are mainly on the public side, so exchange any ringgit or US dollars in the city before your flight day; our guide to the foreign currency limit when leaving Nepal explains how much you may carry. Second, workers travelling to Malaysia for a job follow a separate foreign employment process with the Government of Nepal. This guide is for holiday travellers and family visits, and workers should follow the official foreign employment guidance and their licensed recruiting agent.
Packing and baggage for the KL flight
Baggage allowance depends on the airline and the fare type you buy, not on the route. Full-service fares usually include a checked bag, while the cheapest fare brands on some airlines may include only a cabin bag. Look at the baggage line on your e-ticket, and weigh your bag at home, because excess baggage at the counter is a common surprise on flights out of Kathmandu.
Many Nepali travellers carry home food for relatives in Malaysia. Dry, sealed snacks and spices generally travel well in a checked bag. Oily achar, ghee and anything runny counts as a liquid or gel at security, so pack it in the checked bag in a leak-proof container, double bagged. Malaysia also controls the import of meat, fresh fruit, vegetables, seeds and plant material, so leave fresh produce and homemade meat products at home, and declare anything you are unsure about at Malaysian customs. Coming back the other way, our Nepal customs allowance guide explains what you can bring home duty free.
What happens on arrival at KLIA?
At KLIA Terminal 1 you walk or ride the Aerotrain to immigration, show your passport, collect your bags and pass customs, and then choose a train, taxi or e-hailing car into Kuala Lumpur. Before you fly, make sure your Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) and any visa your passport needs are sorted. Nepali passport holders need a Malaysian visa arranged before travel, and our team explains the visa process for Nepali passport holders on our Malaysia visa page. Travellers on other passports should check the official Immigration Department of Malaysia website for their own nationality.
| Step at KLIA Terminal 1 | What to expect | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Leave the aircraft | Contact pier or satellite gate | From the satellite, take the Aerotrain to the main terminal |
| 2. Immigration | Queue for foreign passports at the counters | Keep your passport and travel documents in your hand, not in a bag |
| 3. Baggage claim | Screens show the belt for your flight number | Keep your bag tag receipt until the bag is in your hand |
| 4. Customs | Green and red channels | Use the red channel if you carry anything to declare, including restricted food |
| 5. Arrival hall | Money exchange, SIM counters, train and taxi signs | Buy a local SIM or set up an eSIM before you leave Nepal |
Immigration officers at Kuala Lumpur, like those at most airports, may ask where you are staying, how long you are visiting and when you leave. Answer simply and show printed or saved copies of your return ticket and hotel booking. If you are visiting relatives, carry their address and phone number.
How do you get from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur city?
The fastest way into the city is the KLIA Ekspres train, which runs non-stop from Terminal 1 to KL Sentral in about 28 minutes. The KLIA Transit train uses the same line but stops at Salak Tinggi, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan, and takes about 35 minutes from Terminal 1. Both run from both terminals.
| Option | Journey to KL Sentral | How often | First and last from KLIA T1 | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KLIA Ekspres | About 28 min from T1, 33 min from T2, non-stop (after 23:00 it stops at all stations) | Every 20 minutes | First 05:00, last 00:05 | Hotels near KL Sentral, Bukit Bintang or KLCC via a short onward ride |
| KLIA Transit | About 35 min from T1, 39 min from T2, three stops | Every 15 minutes at weekday peaks, every 30 minutes off-peak and weekends | First 05:22, last 00:34 | Putrajaya, Cyberjaya or Bandar Tasik Selatan |
| Taxi or e-hailing car | Depends on traffic; allow extra time at rush hour | On demand | 24 hours | Families with heavy bags, elderly parents, pre-dawn arrivals |
Checked: 27 Oct 2026, kliaekspres.com (KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit pages and FAQ). The two trains are separate services and their tickets are not interchangeable; you can also tap a credit card or Touch 'n Go card at the gates.

Can you connect onward from KL to Bali, Vietnam or Australia?
Yes. Kuala Lumpur is the most common connecting point for Nepali travellers heading to Bali, and it also has frequent flights to Vietnam, Australia and the rest of Malaysia. The key decision is whether you buy one ticket all the way or separate tickets.
| Onward from Kuala Lumpur to | Approx. flight time | Non-stop airlines (examples) | KLIA terminals used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bali (Denpasar, DPS) | About 3 h to 3 h 20 min | Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, AirAsia | T1 and T2 |
| Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) | About 1 h 45 min to 2 h 15 min | Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines | T1 and T2 |
| Perth (PER) | About 5 h 30 min to 6 h | Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, AirAsia | T1 and T2 |
| Sydney (SYD) | About 7 h 55 min to 8 h 40 min | Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, AirAsia X, Turkish Airlines | T1 and T2 |
| Melbourne (MEL) | About 7 h 40 min to 8 h 30 min | Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia X (Batik Air listed from December 2026) | T1 and T2 |
| Langkawi (LGK) | About 1 h 5 min to 1 h 15 min | Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, AirAsia | T1 and T2 |
| Kota Kinabalu (BKI) | About 2 h 30 min to 2 h 45 min | Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, AirAsia | T1 and T2 |
Checked: 27 Oct 2026, FlightsFrom.com route pages from KUL. Schedules and airlines change by season; confirm with the airline.
One ticket or separate tickets?
On one ticket (for example Kathmandu to Bali on Malaysia Airlines), your bag is usually checked through, you follow the Transfer signs at KLIA, and you do not pass Malaysian immigration as long as you stay airside. If the first flight is late, the airline is responsible for rebooking you. On separate tickets (for example Nepal Airlines to KL and then AirAsia to Bali) you must enter Malaysia, collect and recheck your bag, and possibly change terminals. If the first flight is late and you miss the second, the second airline usually treats you as a no-show.
| Point | One ticket (through fare) | Separate tickets (self transfer) |
|---|---|---|
| Bags | Usually checked through to the final airport | Collect and recheck at KLIA |
| Malaysian immigration | Not needed if you stay airside | Needed; your passport must allow entry to Malaysia |
| Terminal change | Rare; Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air connections stay in T1 | Common if the second flight is AirAsia (T2) |
| Missed connection | Airline rebooks you | Usually your loss |
| Time to allow | The minimum the airline sells | Several hours |
Do you need a transit visa in Kuala Lumpur?
It depends on whether you leave the airside area. If you stay airside on a through ticket, you normally do not pass Malaysian immigration. If you need to collect bags, change terminals or leave the airport, you are entering Malaysia, and your passport must allow that. Transit rules are set by the Immigration Department of Malaysia and can change, so check the official site and our Malaysia visa guidance before you book a self-transfer.
Can you add a stopover in Kuala Lumpur?
Many travellers heading to Bali or Australia spend two or three nights in Kuala Lumpur on the way. A stopover works best on a single ticket that allows it, and it requires the same entry permission as any visit to Malaysia. If you are choosing between a KL stopover and a Singapore one, our comparison of Malaysia vs Singapore sets out the differences in cost, food and pace.
How much does a Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur flight cost by season?
A typical economy return ticket from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur is roughly NPR 50,000 to 90,000 depending on the month, and a typical one-way ticket is roughly NPR 32,000 to 60,000. These are typical ranges from fare search sites, not quotes. Live fares change daily, and festival dates and last-minute bookings can sit well above them.
| Season (travel month) | Typical one-way economy (NPR) | Typical return economy (NPR) | Label, checked date and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak: Dashain and Tihar (October to mid November) | 35,000 to 60,000; festival dates often above this | 55,000 to 90,000; festival dates can be higher | Typical range, not a quote. Checked: 27 Oct 2026, source: KAYAK route pages (kayak.com, ca.kayak.com, kayak.com.my) |

| Peak: Nepali New Year and summer break (April to May) | 32,000 to 55,000 | 50,000 to 80,000; April was the cheapest month in KAYAK's data | Typical range, not a quote. Checked: 27 Oct 2026, source: KAYAK route pages |
| Shoulder (February to March) | 32,000 to 55,000 | 52,000 to 80,000 | Typical range, not a quote. Checked: 27 Oct 2026, source: KAYAK route pages |
| Off-peak monsoon in Nepal (June to September) | 35,000 to 60,000 | 58,000 to 90,000; June and September were the dearest months in KAYAK's data | Typical range, not a quote. Checked: 27 Oct 2026, source: KAYAK route pages |
How we built this table: KAYAK publishes typical one-way and return ranges and monthly return medians for Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur, but not by Nepali season. We took KAYAK's typical one-way and return ranges and its cheapest and dearest monthly medians (April, June and September) from kayak.com, ca.kayak.com and kayak.com.my, converted them to Nepali rupees, rounded them and kept every row wide, with the peak rows widest. The season split is Gomayu's judgement, not KAYAK's. Ranges include one-stop itineraries. Re-check every season.
What the fare data tells us
The pattern on this route is not the same as on holiday routes such as Bangkok or Bali. For Kuala Lumpur, the months we call "off-peak" for Nepali holidays, June to September, were actually the most expensive in KAYAK's recent data, while April was the cheapest. The likely reason is that this is a working route as much as a holiday route, with heavy traffic of workers and families that does not follow the Nepali festival calendar. Holiday travellers can use that to their advantage: a spring trip around Nepali New Year often costs less than a monsoon one.
Dashain and Tihar: plan early
Around Dashain and Tihar, many Nepalis working in Malaysia fly home, so demand toward Kathmandu tends to rise before the festivals and demand back to Kuala Lumpur after Tihar. If you are flying to Malaysia for a festival holiday, book as early as you can and avoid the busiest return days. Our guide to Dashain and Tihar holidays abroad covers booking windows for festival trips, and our guide to the best time to visit Malaysia explains which coasts are dry in which months.
How to keep the fare down
- Compare the overnight and daytime flights; the same airline can price them differently on the same day.
- Check the fare brand: a lower fare without a checked bag can cost more once you add baggage.
- Search a few days either side of your preferred date, especially around festivals and school holidays.
- Price a one-ticket itinerary to Bali, Vietnam or Australia, not just two separate tickets; it can be close in price and much safer.
- Book well ahead for Dashain, Tihar and the April to May school break.

How do you plan the rest of your Malaysia trip?
Once the flight is clear, the rest of the plan falls into place: where to stay in Kuala Lumpur, whether to add Langkawi, Penang or Borneo, and how many days to give each. For a first trip, many Nepali couples and families spend three or four nights in Kuala Lumpur with a day at Genting Highlands or Batu Caves, then add a beach island. If you are still deciding between countries, our guide to the best holiday destinations for Nepali travellers compares Malaysia with Thailand, Bali, Vietnam and Singapore.
If you would rather have flights, hotels and transfers arranged together, browse our Malaysia tour packages to see how a Kuala Lumpur trip can be combined with the islands or Singapore.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a flight from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?
A typical economy return from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur is roughly NPR 50,000 to 90,000 depending on the month, and a typical one-way roughly NPR 32,000 to 60,000. This is a typical range, not a quote (Checked: 27 Oct 2026, KAYAK route pages). Festival dates and late bookings can cost more, so always check live fares.
How many hours is the flight from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?
The non-stop Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur flight is scheduled at about 4 hours 35 minutes to 4 hours 55 minutes, depending on the airline and departure. Because Malaysia is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal, the clock shows about 7 hours between leaving Kathmandu and landing at KLIA.
Is the Malaysia to Nepal flight longer than Nepal to Malaysia?
Not noticeably. The Kuala Lumpur to Kathmandu flight is scheduled at about 4 hours 40 minutes to 4 hours 55 minutes, almost the same as the outbound. The clock makes it feel shorter: an 18:10 departure from Kuala Lumpur lands in Kathmandu at about 20:35 local time.
Which airlines fly direct from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur?
Four airlines fly non-stop from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air Malaysia, Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines. Batik Air has the most flights, including a daily overnight departure. Together they ran roughly 30 or more flights a week in late October 2026 (Checked: 27 Oct 2026, KAYAK and airline schedules).
Does Nepal Airlines fly to Kuala Lumpur?
Yes. Nepal Airlines flies an Airbus A320 from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur two to three times a week, recently on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, landing at KLIA Terminal 1. Its small fleet has led to occasional cancellations, so check the flight status the day before you travel.
Which KLIA terminal does AirAsia use?
AirAsia uses KLIA Terminal 2, the building formerly called klia2. AirAsia does not currently fly Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur; all four Kathmandu airlines arrive at Terminal 1. If you connect from a Kathmandu flight to AirAsia, you change terminals and pass Malaysian immigration.
Do I need a transit visa if I connect in Kuala Lumpur?
If you stay airside at KLIA on one ticket with your bag checked through, you normally do not pass Malaysian immigration. If you must collect bags, change between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 or leave the airport, you are entering Malaysia and need permission for your passport. Check the Immigration Department of Malaysia and our Malaysia visa guidance.
What time do flights usually leave Kathmandu for KL?
Flights from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur leave in two main windows: late morning to early afternoon (around 10:15 to 13:50), arriving in KL in the late afternoon or evening, and late night (around 21:25 to 22:45), arriving before dawn. Times change with each season, so check your e-ticket.
How far is Malaysia from Nepal?
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is about 3,270 km (about 2,030 miles) from Kathmandu airport in a straight line. That is our calculation from the airport coordinates, matching KAYAK's figure for the route. The non-stop flight covers it in a little under five hours.
Can I carry achar or dry food on the flight to Malaysia?
Dry, sealed snacks and spices usually travel well in checked baggage to Malaysia. Achar in oil, ghee and other runny foods count as liquids at security, so pack them in the checked bag in leak-proof containers. Malaysia restricts meat, fresh fruit, vegetables and plant material, so declare anything you are unsure about at customs.
What is the time difference between Nepal and Malaysia?
Malaysia is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal. Malaysia uses UTC+8 and Nepal UTC+5:45, and neither country changes its clocks for daylight saving, so the gap is the same all year. When it is noon in Kathmandu, it is 14:15 in Kuala Lumpur.
