Most lists of holiday destinations for Nepali travellers are written as if the only thing that matters is how pretty a place is. The part that actually decides whether your trip happens, and when, is the paperwork.
Two countries on this list let you turn up with almost nothing. Two others need you to be standing in an office in person before you fly. Same map, completely different planning timelines. So this guide covers eleven destinations that suit Nepali travellers, and for each one it tells you plainly what a Nepali passport actually needs.
Everything below was checked against official government sources in July 2026. Visa rules change, sometimes with very little notice, so treat the official links as the final word and this article as your starting point.

India
The easiest international trip a Nepali passport holder can take, and the only one on this list with no paperwork at all.
The Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur is the classic first route, and it packs the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort and Hawa Mahal into a short trip. Varanasi on the Ganges is the draw for anyone travelling for spiritual reasons. Kerala's backwaters and Goa's beaches sit at the other end of the country and the other end of the mood.
Worth seeing: Taj Mahal, Jaipur's forts and palaces, Varanasi ghats, Kerala backwaters, Goa beaches, Delhi's Red Fort and Qutub Minar.
Visa: Nepali citizens are exempt from both passport and visa requirements when travelling directly between Nepal and India. Two things catch people out. Flying requires an original Nepali passport or citizenship certificate, and photocopies are routinely refused at check in. And the exemption only covers direct travel: arriving in India from China, Hong Kong, Macau or Pakistan means you need a passport and an Indian visa, so a routing through Hong Kong quietly turns a visa free trip into a visa trip. Singapore
Small, spotless and extremely easy to move around, which makes it a good first overseas trip for families and for anyone nervous about travelling independently. You can cross the whole country on the MRT.
Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay carry the postcard views. Sentosa holds Universal Studios and the beaches. Chinatown and Little India are where the food gets interesting, and the hawker centres are the reason a lot of people come back.
Worth seeing: Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island, Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, Merlion Park, Orchard Road.
Visa: Nepal is not on Singapore's list of nationalities that require a visa, so Nepali passport holders enter visa free. This surprises people, so it is worth saying clearly. What you must not skip is the SG Arrival Card, submitted online within three days of arrival, and immigration states that travellers who fail to submit it may be denied entry. Maldives
The honeymoon destination, and increasingly a family one too. Each resort tends to occupy its own island, so the privacy is real rather than marketed.
Overwater villas are the signature. The reefs are the substance: on many islands good snorkelling starts a few metres off your own beach, no boat needed. Local islands with guesthouses have opened the country up to travellers who are not booking a private island.
Worth seeing: overwater villas, house reefs, dolphin trips, bioluminescent beaches, Male's fish market.
Visa: A tourist visa is granted on arrival to all nationalities, with no pre approval needed. The thing that trips people is the IMUGA Traveller Declaration, which is mandatory within 96 hours before your flight and again when you leave. Sri Lanka
Short flight, big variety. Beaches, tea country, ancient cities and leopard safaris all sit within a few hours of each other, which is unusual for a country this size.
Sigiriya rock fortress and the cave temples at Dambulla cover the history. Ella and Nuwara Eliya are the hill country, reached by one of the better train rides in Asia. Yala and Udawalawe are the wildlife parks. Galle Fort on the south coast is the one place most people wish they had given an extra night.

Visa: Nepal is one of the countries whose nationals receive the tourist travel authorisation without charge, but this is the trap: without charge does not mean not required. Every foreign national, including those on that list, must obtain the Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. This scheme changed in May 2026, so check the status close to your travel date. Kenya
The safari trip, and the one on this list that most people describe afterwards as the best thing they have done.
The Maasai Mara is the centrepiece, and between roughly July and October it hosts the wildebeest migration crossing up from Tanzania. Amboseli gives you elephant herds with Kilimanjaro behind them. Lake Nakuru has flamingos and rhino. Nairobi has a national park on its doorstep, which is genuinely strange and worth a morning.
Worth seeing: Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru, Diani Beach, Hell's Gate National Park.
Visa: Kenya no longer issues tourist visas, but that does not mean you can simply fly. Every visitor, including infants, must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before the journey starts, and Nepal is not among the exempted nationalities. Kenya's own guidance warns that failing to comply may lead to being denied boarding. Source and application: eTA Kenya.

Vietnam
The destination that has grown fastest in the last few years, and with good reason. It offers roughly what Thailand offers, with fewer crowds at the famous sites.
Ha Long Bay's limestone islands are the image everyone knows. Hanoi's old quarter is the best street food city in the country. Hoi An is a lantern lit old town that most people fall for immediately. Da Nang has the beaches and the golden bridge. Ho Chi Minh City is the busy, modern counterweight in the south.
Worth seeing: Ha Long Bay, Hanoi Old Quarter, Hoi An Ancient Town, Da Nang and the Marble Mountains, Ninh Binh, the Mekong Delta.
Visa: Vietnam has offered an e visa to all nationalities since August 2023, so Nepali passport holders apply online in advance. Two warnings. Only evisa.gov.vn is the official portal and the Vietnamese authorities state plainly that all other websites are invalid, so ignore the agencies that appear above it in search results. Thailand
Still the most popular first international trip for Nepali travellers, and it earns it. Beaches, temples, food and shopping in one country, with good infrastructure and short internal flights.
Bangkok gives you the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the street food. Phuket and Krabi are the Andaman beaches, best from November to April. Koh Samui sits on the Gulf side and runs on a different weather calendar. Chiang Mai in the north is the quieter, cooler option with the temples and night markets.
Worth seeing: Grand Palace and Wat Pho, Phi Phi Islands, Krabi and Railay, Chiang Mai's old city, Ayutthaya.
Visa: This one has changed and a lot of older articles are still wrong about it. Nepal is on neither Thailand's visa exemption list nor its visa on arrival list, and since January 2025 all Nepali applicants must apply through the Thai e visa system. The Kathmandu process is only partly online: you apply on the portal, then pay by manager's cheque at a designated bank and submit physically at the embassy during a narrow morning window. The embassy itself advises applying around a month ahead. Separately, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card is mandatory for all arrivals within three days of travel. Malaysia
Underrated, and the best value on this list for travellers who want cities and nature in the same trip.
Kuala Lumpur has the Petronas Towers and some of the most varied food in Asia, because Malay, Chinese and Indian cooking all sit side by side. Langkawi is the island escape. The Cameron Highlands are cool, green and covered in tea. Penang's Georgetown is the street food and street art city.
Worth seeing: Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Langkawi, Georgetown in Penang, Cameron Highlands, Taman Negara rainforest.
Visa: Malaysian Immigration lists Nepal among the countries whose nationals require a visa to enter, applied for online in advance. The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is separately mandatory and must be submitted no more than three days before arrival. Immigration is explicit that this card is not a visa and does not replace one. Bali, Indonesia
The honeymoon and couples destination that has held its position for a decade, because it delivers on both scenery and comfort.
Ubud is the cultural centre, ringed by rice terraces and temples. The south coast around Seminyak and Uluwatu has the surf, the sunsets and the cliff top temples. Mount Batur is the sunrise trek. Nusa Penida offers the dramatic coastline that fills most Bali photo feeds.
Worth seeing: Ubud and the Tegallalang rice terraces, Uluwatu Temple at sunset, Tanah Lot, Mount Batur sunrise trek, Nusa Penida.
Visa: Nepal does not appear on Indonesia's visa on arrival eligibility list, which means there is no fallback if you land unprepared. Apply in advance through the official immigration e visa portal and confirm the current requirement close to your travel date, because Indonesia amended its entry rules again in July 2026. China
The neighbour most Nepali travellers underestimate. It holds more variety than anywhere else on this list, from the Great Wall to karst mountains to some of the most advanced cities in the world.
Beijing carries the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Xi'an has the Terracotta Army. Shanghai is the skyline and the Bund. Guilin and the Li River are the landscape everyone recognises from Chinese paintings, and Chengdu is where you see the pandas.

Visa: Worth being blunt here, because the assumption catches people. China has expanded visa free entry repeatedly between 2024 and 2026 and Nepal has been excluded every time. Nepal is on neither the visa exemption list nor the transit exemption list. You apply online and then attend the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Kathmandu in person to give fingerprints. Dubai
The short haul luxury break: skyline, shopping, desert and beach inside a few days, with almost no travel time between them.
The Burj Khalifa observation deck and the Dubai Fountain are the obvious ones. The desert safari with dune driving and an evening in camp is the thing most people remember. The old souks at Dubai Creek are the counterweight to all the glass, and Palm Jumeirah is where the resorts sit.

Visa: The UAE does not issue tourist visas through its embassies. A licensed UAE travel agent, hotel or airline applies on your behalf, or you apply through the official government channels yourself, which means you need that sponsor lined up before anything else can start. One misconception is worth correcting directly: the rule that lets holders of a US visa or UK and EU residence get a visa on arrival applies to Indian citizens only. It does not extend to Nepali passport holders, and people have been turned back over exactly this. Source: UAE Government portal.
What to sort out before you book anything
Check the visa first, then the dates. Booking flights before you know your visa timeline is the single most common and most expensive mistake. Thailand, China and Dubai in particular need weeks, not days.
Passport validity. Most of these countries want at least six months remaining. Check yours now rather than three days before departure.
The arrival cards are not optional. Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Maldives all require a separate online form that is not a visa. Skipping it can get you denied entry even when your visa is perfect.
Match the season, not just the price. Thailand's two coasts have opposite monsoons. Kenya's migration runs on a schedule. The Maldives has a wet season. The right month matters more than most people expect.
Travel insurance. Several of these countries expect proof of it, and for safari and diving trips you want cover that actually includes the activity.
Frequently asked questions
Which country is easiest for a Nepali passport holder to visit?
India, with no visa and no passport requirement for direct travel between the two countries. After that, Singapore and the Maldives, which need only an online arrival form rather than a visa.
Can Nepali citizens travel to Singapore without a visa?
Yes. Nepal does not appear on Singapore's list of nationalities requiring a visa. You still must submit the SG Arrival Card online within three days of arrival, and entry remains at the immigration officer's discretion.
Do Nepali citizens get visa on arrival in Thailand?
No. Nepal is on neither Thailand's visa exemption list nor its visa on arrival list. Since January 2025 Nepali applicants must apply through the Thai e visa system, with part of the process completed in person in Kathmandu. Allow around a month.
Is China visa free for Nepali citizens?
No. China has expanded visa free entry to many countries between 2024 and 2026 and Nepal has not been included in any of those expansions. A visa must be applied for in advance, with fingerprints given in person in Kathmandu.
Which destination needs the most planning time?
Thailand, China and Dubai. Thailand and China both require attending in person in Kathmandu, and Dubai requires a UAE based sponsor to apply on your behalf before anything can begin.
Do I still need something for Sri Lanka and Kenya if the authorisation is free?
Yes. Free of charge is not the same as not required. Both countries require an approved electronic travel authorisation before you board, and Kenya warns that travellers without one may be denied boarding.
Choosing where to go
If this is your first trip abroad, go somewhere with light paperwork so that the visa is not the stressful part. India, Singapore, the Maldives and Sri Lanka all qualify.
If you have a fixed leave window and it is close, that rules out Thailand, China and Dubai on timing alone, whatever you may prefer.
If you want the most memorable trip and you have time to plan, Kenya is the one people talk about for years.
If you want the best value for a week away, Vietnam and Malaysia are the two most consistently underrated on this list.
