Short answer: If you lose your Nepali passport abroad, report the loss to the local police, get a copy of the police report, and contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country you are in. People often search for an emergency passport Nepal can issue overseas, but missions abroad do not offer the emergency passport service. What they issue is a one-way travel document (एकतर्फी यात्रा अनुमतिपत्र) that lets you fly back to Nepal. Once your papers are complete, some embassies say it is usually ready the same or the next working day, and others by the third working day. A full replacement passport is a regular application and takes much longer.
This guide is for Nepali passport holders travelling to Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, the Maldives, China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Kenya, India, Dubai and the Philippines. It sets out the steps in the order you will actually need them, explains what the MoFA Mitra app does and does not do, and lists which Nepali embassy covers each country. Every rule, time and contact below was checked on 4 November 2026 on official government pages; where no official page exists, we name the news report we relied on. Rules change, so confirm with the embassy before you act on any of it.
If you are reading this in a hotel lobby with your heart racing: take a breath. Losing a passport is stressful, but it is a known problem with a known process. Many travellers go through it, and they get home.
| If this is your situation | Do this first |
|---|---|
| You cannot find your passport but it may be in your room, bag or car | Search properly, retrace your steps, call the last hotel, restaurant or taxi app |
| Your passport was stolen or is definitely lost | Go to the nearest police station and ask for a written report of the loss |
| You have a flight home in the next few days | Contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country and ask about a one-way travel document |
| You are in danger, hurt, or someone threatened you | Call the local emergency number first, paperwork second |
| You travel on another country's passport | Contact your own country's embassy, not the Nepali one |
What should you do first if you lose your passport abroad?
Stay calm, make sure you are safe, and confirm the passport is really gone before you report it. Once you report a Nepali passport lost or stolen, it can no longer be used for travel, even if it turns up later, so a ten minute search of your bags and room is worth doing first. After that, follow these steps in order.
- Check you are safe. If the passport was taken in a robbery or you feel threatened, call the local emergency number straight away. The numbers for each destination are in the police section below.
- Search properly, once. Empty every bag, check the hotel safe, the room, the car or bus you used, and ask the hotel front desk. Call the restaurant or shop you visited last. Check whether a taxi or ride app driver has reported finding it.
- Find your copies. Open the photo of your passport photo page on your phone or in your cloud storage. If you do not have one, look for an email from your airline, hotel or visa application that shows your passport number.
- Report the loss to the local police and ask for a written report that states the date and time of the loss. Every Nepali embassy page we checked asks for this report when a passport is lost.
- Contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country. Some destinations have their own Nepali embassy; others are covered from a neighbouring country. The table further down shows which is which.
- Log a request in the MoFA Mitra app if you have it, so the mission has a written record and you can track the response.
- Tell your airline and your travel insurer. The airline needs to know you will travel on a different document. Your insurer may cover extra hotel nights or rebooking, and will want the police report.
- Collect your one-way travel document and confirm with the airline that it accepts it for your route home, especially if you have a connection.
- Contact the immigration authority of the country you are in if your visa or entry stamp was in the lost passport. You may need their clearance before you can leave.
- Apply for a replacement passport once you are back in Nepal, choosing the lost or stolen replacement option.
Write down everything as you go: the police station name, the report number, the officer's name, the embassy official you spoke to and the time. If something stalls, that record saves hours.
Emergency passport Nepal: what can you actually get abroad?
Abroad, you can get a one-way travel document from a Nepali embassy, not an emergency passport. The Department of Passports runs its emergency passport service only in Kathmandu, and Nepali missions abroad offer only the regular passport service. This is the single most misunderstood point in the whole process: when people talk about a Nepal emergency passport, they usually mean the fast Kathmandu service, which you cannot use from abroad.
According to the Department of Passports, the emergency service is applied for directly at the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu, and passports are typically issued within two working days after enrolment. Regular service in Nepal goes through the District Administration Office or Area Administration Office that issued your citizenship. The same page states that Nepali missions abroad provide regular service only, not emergency or fast track service. Checked: 4 November 2026, Department of Passports.
| Document | Where you get it | What it is for | Typical time (as officially stated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emergency service passport | Department of Passports, Tripureshwor, Kathmandu only | Urgent passport for someone already in Nepal | Typically within two working days after enrolment |
| One-way travel document (एकतर्फी यात्रा अनुमतिपत्र) | The Nepali embassy that covers the country you are in | A single journey back to Nepal after a passport is lost, stolen or damaged | Bangkok and Colombo: usually same day or next working day. Kuala Lumpur: third working day |
| Replacement passport applied through a mission | A Nepali embassy abroad, regular service only | Staying abroad long term, for example work or study | Kuala Lumpur says passports normally take 45 to 60 days to reach the embassy from Kathmandu |
| Replacement passport in Nepal | District or Area Administration Office, or the Department of Passports | Getting a full passport again after you return | Regular service typically 10 to 30 days; emergency service typically two working days |
Checked: 4 November 2026, Department of Passports and the embassy pages linked in the sections below.
For a short holiday, the practical route is almost always the same: get the one-way travel document, fly home, and apply for a new passport in Nepal. Our e-passport guide for Nepal walks through that application, including how to track it.
How do you file a police report?
Go in person to the nearest police station, or the tourist police where they exist, and report the passport as lost or stolen. Ask for a written copy that states the date, time and place of the loss and your passport number. The Nepali embassy in Kuala Lumpur, for example, asks for "a police report stating the date and time of the loss", and the embassies in Bangkok and Colombo ask for a registered police report when a passport is lost.
Take these with you to the station:
- Any photo ID you still have, such as a citizenship card copy, national ID or driving licence
- A photo or photocopy of your passport photo page
- Your hotel address and booking reference
- A translator or a translation app if the local language is not English or Nepali
Ask the officer three questions before you leave: does the report show the passport number, is there a report or case number, and can you have a stamped copy. If the report is in a language other than English, ask the embassy whether they need a translation. In Vietnam, the UK government notes that emergency lines operate in Vietnamese only and advises taking a translator when reporting a crime, so plan for help with language.
Emergency and police numbers in Gomayu destinations
Use these for emergencies and to find the right police unit. For a simple lost passport report, walking into a police station is usually faster than calling.
| Destination | Police or emergency number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand | Tourist Police 1155; urgent matters 191 | Royal Thai Government, thailand.go.th |
| Vietnam | Police 113; fire 114; ambulance 115 | UK FCDO travel advice |
| Indonesia (Bali) | Police 110 or 112 | Australian Government Smartraveller |

Checked: 4 November 2026, sources as listed in the table. Save the number for your destination in your phone contacts before you travel.
One country spells out the whole sequence for foreign visitors. Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority says to report the loss to police at any police station, neighbourhood police centre or police post, then contact your embassy for a replacement travel document. Short-term visitors can then leave on that document with a copy of the police report, as long as they are within their visit pass validity. Checked: 4 November 2026, ICA Singapore. Other countries follow a similar pattern, but the details differ, so ask.
How do you contact the Nepali embassy or consulate?
Contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country you are in, by email and phone first, then in person with your documents. Six of the twelve Gomayu destinations have a resident Nepali embassy; the other six are covered by an embassy in a neighbouring country under what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls concurrent accreditation.
The table below follows the Ministry's own concurrent accreditation list and each embassy's official website. Email addresses are copied from the embassy homepages. Phone numbers on those homepages are listed against named officials and change with staff postings, so we have not copied them here; open the website for the current numbers, including any line marked for urgent matters.

Checked: 4 November 2026, Ministry of Foreign Affairs concurrent accreditation list and each embassy homepage.
A few notes that the table cannot hold:
- Kenya: the Ministry's list shows Kenya under the embassy in Pretoria. In 2026 the government announced plans to close the embassy in South Africa, which is based in Pretoria. The Ministry said the offices will close fully only once a reliable alternative arrangement for their services is in place, as Ratopati reported on 7 August 2026. No closure date had been announced in the reports we found (checked 4 November 2026). If you are in Kenya, check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs missions list for the current arrangement before you travel.
- China: the same announcement covered the Consulate General in Chengdu, again only once alternative arrangements exist. If you are in China outside Beijing, check the Beijing embassy website for the office that serves your city.
- Dubai: a Consulate General of Nepal has opened in Deira, Dubai. Himalpress reported in November 2025 that the Abu Dhabi embassy asked Nepalis in Dubai and the northern emirates to use the consulate for consular services, while Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Al Dhafra and Ruwais stay with the embassy. Ratopati reported in October 2026 that the consulate issues travel documents to people who need to return to Nepal. We found no separate official consulate website, so confirm its current contacts on the Abu Dhabi embassy website before you go.
- Honorary consuls: the Bangkok embassy website lists honorary consuls for Singapore and Laos. Honorary consuls can be a useful local contact, but ask the accredited embassy in Bangkok who issues travel documents.
- Working hours: embassies close on public holidays, both Nepali and local. If you lose your passport before a weekend or during Dashain or Tihar, email at once so your case is waiting when the office reopens.
When you write to the embassy, keep the email short and complete: your full name as in the passport, passport number, date of birth, where and when you lost it, the police report number, your phone number in the country, your hotel address, and your flight date home. Attach the police report, a photo of your passport photo page and a photo of your citizenship certificate if you have them.
What is MoFA Mitra and how does it help?

MoFA Mitra is a mobile app from Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs that lets Nepalis abroad, and their families in Nepal, register consular requests and grievances online and send them directly to the relevant Nepali mission. It was formally launched on 26 May 2026 in Kathmandu by Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and was developed by the Department of Consular Services, according to Onlinekhabar and The Himalayan Times.
What the launch reports and the official store listing confirm:
| Point | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Who made it | Developed by the Department of Consular Services, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The App Store lists the seller as the National Information Technology Center, Government of Nepal |
| Platforms | Android and iOS |
| Who it is for | Nepali citizens abroad and their families |
| Main features | Register consular concerns and grievances, track the status of a request, and communicate directly with the relevant Nepali mission |
| Services named at launch | Inquiries, complaints, rescue, management of the remains of Nepalis who die abroad, compensation and insurance claims |
| What changed | Requests go straight to the mission concerned instead of first going to the department in Kathmandu and being forwarded, which officials said should cut delays; the department's Director General described it as an expansion of the existing online complaint system (Republica) |
Checked: 4 November 2026, Onlinekhabar, The Himalayan Times, Republica and the MoFA Mitra App Store listing.
How to use MoFA Mitra when your passport is lost
Treat the app as a second channel, not a replacement for contacting the embassy. None of the launch reports describe applying for a passport or a travel document inside the app, and embassy pages still describe in-person applications. Where the app helps is in getting your situation on record with the right mission and letting you track a reply.
- Install it before you travel, from the official Google Play or App Store listing, and check the publisher is a Government of Nepal body. Fake look-alike apps are a risk with any government service.
- Register while you are on good wifi. Sign-up is easier at home than in a police station with weak signal.
- If you lose your passport, submit a short request naming the country, your situation and your flight date, then email or call the embassy as well.
- Family in Nepal can help. Because the app is also open to families, a parent or spouse at home can follow up if you are stuck without data.

What is an emergency travel document?

For a Nepali citizen, the emergency travel document is the one-way travel document, officially एकतर्फी यात्रा अनुमतिपत्र, issued by a Nepali embassy to someone who has no valid passport and needs to return to Nepal. It is valid only for travel to Nepal. You cannot use it to continue a holiday to another country. Embassy pages use slightly different English names for it, such as "Travel Document", "One Way Travel Documents" and "one-way travel permit", but they describe the same thing.
Who issues it
The Nepali embassy that covers the country you are in. The Kuala Lumpur embassy states that the document is issued to a Nepali citizen who does not have a passport and needs to return to Nepal, and that it is valid for two months from the date of issue. The Bangkok and Colombo embassies list it for passports that are torn, lost or destroyed, and for newborns born abroad to Nepali parents.
What the embassies ask for
Requirements are set by each embassy and can change. This is what their own pages listed on the day we checked.
| Item | Bangkok | Colombo | Kuala Lumpur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application or form | Written application to the embassy stating the reason | Written application to the embassy stating the reason | Completed application form |
| Copy of the lost passport | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Police report | Registered report, if lost | Registered report, if lost | Yes |
| Citizenship | Copy of Nepali citizenship | Copy of Nepali citizenship | Citizenship certificate |
| Photos | Two recent passport-size | Two recent passport-size | Two passport-size |
| Other | None listed | None listed | Attend in person to apply and collect |
| Processing time stated | Same day or next working day if documents complete | Same day or next working day if documents complete | Third working day after applying |
Checked: 4 November 2026, Embassy of Nepal, Bangkok, Embassy of Nepal, Colombo and Embassy of Nepal, Kuala Lumpur. Ask the embassy about any applicable fee.
The UAE is worded differently. The Abu Dhabi embassy's travel document page, listed in its menu as the one-way travel permit, describes a temporary document linked to a passport application. When a passport is lost, it lists a police report and a letter to the embassy from your employer or company, alongside the passport form, a copy of the passport, a copy of your UAE visa page and two photos, and it requires you to attend in person. It does not state a processing time. If you are in the UAE, ask the embassy or the Dubai consulate which document applies to you. Checked: 4 November 2026, Embassy of Nepal, Abu Dhabi.
Two practical points. First, the Kuala Lumpur embassy says people who live in Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines or Timor-Leste can apply for the travel document by email, wait for verification, and then have it couriered. The page words this for residents, so if you are visiting Bali or Manila on holiday, email the embassy straight away and ask whether the same route applies to you; it could save you a journey to Malaysia without a passport. Second, the Bangkok embassy links to an online verification page for the one-way travel documents it issues, which can help if an airline counter wants to confirm the document is genuine.
What about the visa in your lost passport?
Your visa or entry stamp was in the lost passport, and the travel document does not replace it. Contact the immigration authority of the country you are in, explain that your passport is lost, and ask what they need before you can leave; bring your police report and travel document. Singapore, as shown above, allows short-term visitors to leave on the travel document with the police report while their visit pass is valid. Other countries may want you to visit their immigration office first, which can add a day or more, so ask early. For general entry and visa information by country, see our visa information pages.
How do you get home or continue the trip?

Most Nepali holidaymakers who lose a passport fly home on the one-way travel document and apply for a new passport in Nepal. Continuing to another country is usually not realistic, because the travel document is valid only for travel to Nepal and a replacement passport applied for abroad takes weeks. The Kuala Lumpur embassy, for example, says passports normally take 45 to 60 days to reach it from Kathmandu.
Flying home on the travel document
- Call your airline before you go to the airport. Give them the travel document number and ask them to note it on your booking.
- Be careful with connections. A direct flight to Kathmandu is the simplest case. If your route connects through another country, ask the airline whether that country accepts the travel document for transit, and get the answer in writing if you can.
- Carry your police report and the travel document together, plus any letter or clearance from the local immigration office.
- Arrive at the airport early. Check-in staff may need to call a supervisor to accept the document.
- Keep every receipt. Extra hotel nights, taxis to the police station and embassy, photos and courier charges may be claimable on your travel insurance.
Check what your policy covers before you need it. Our guide to buying and claiming travel insurance from Nepal explains what to look for, including document loss and trip delay.
Back in Nepal: replacing the passport
The lost passport Nepal procedure at home starts online. Apply for a replacement passport through the Department of Passports online system and choose the "Replacement, Lost/Stolen" option. You will need your citizenship certificate; keep your police report and travel document with you in case the office asks for them. If you need a passport urgently, for example for a work contract or a rebooked trip, the Department's emergency service in Tripureshwor is the one to ask about.
One rule catches people out. The Department of Passports states: "A passport reported as lost or stolen must not be used for travel, even if it is later recovered." If your old passport turns up after you report it, do not travel on it, even if a foreign immigration office tells you that you can. Checked: 4 November 2026, Department of Passports.
Lost your passport in India?
India is a special case because Nepali citizens do not need a passport to travel there. If you lose your passport in India on a simple Nepal and back trip, you can still get home on another accepted document: for flights, the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi names either a passport or a Nepali citizenship certificate. A passport is still needed if you planned to fly on from India to a third country. Contact the embassy in New Delhi if you have no accepted ID left. Our guide on which IDs Nepalis can use for India by air and land quotes the official sources in full.
What if you travel on a different passport?
If you hold a passport from another country, contact that country's embassy, not the Nepali one. A Nepali embassy can only issue travel documents to Nepali citizens. This matters for many Nepali diaspora travellers who hold British, American, Australian, Indian or other passports and fly to Asia from London, Sydney or the Gulf.
- Your own government is the issuing authority. Many governments issue their own emergency travel document and run an emergency consular line. Check the official site for your passport before you travel and save the number.
- An NRN identity card is not a passport. Carry it if it helps prove your link to Nepal, but do not expect to travel on it.
- Mixed families need two plans. If one parent travels on a Nepali passport and the children on a foreign one, write down both embassies' contacts before the trip.
- Coming to Nepal afterwards? If your foreign passport carried your Nepal visa or entry stamp, ask Nepal's Department of Immigration what they need once your replacement passport is issued.
How can you prevent passport loss?

Passports usually go missing at moments when they are out of their usual place: in airport queues, taxis, hotel check-ins, on the beach and in crowded markets. A few habits cut that risk sharply, and digital copies make the bad case much easier to fix.
Habits that work
- One pocket, always. Pick a zipped inside pocket or a body pouch and put the passport back there every single time, including at the boarding gate.
- Leave it in the hotel safe on day trips when local rules and your plans allow, and carry a photocopy instead. Domestic flights, some checkpoints and some venues need the original, so check the day before.
- Never hand it over as a deposit. Scooter rental shops sometimes ask for a passport; offer a copy or a cash deposit instead.
- Count your documents at every transition: leaving the hotel, getting out of a taxi, after security, after immigration.
- Use a plain passport cover so it is easy to spot in a bag, and so you notice when it is missing.
- Split your valuables. Do not keep your passport, cards and cash in the same bag. Losing one bag should never mean losing everything.
- Families: one adult holds all passports, and a second adult has the copies.
Departure day is a high-risk moment, with documents coming in and out of your pocket at check-in, security and immigration. Our step-by-step guide to departing from Kathmandu airport shows each point where you need the passport, and our first-time flight tips cover the airport routine abroad as well.
Back up your e-passport the right way
Nepal now issues e-passports, and the photo page is the one that matters. Take a clear, flat photo of it in good light, with every line of text readable, including the passport number and the machine-readable lines at the bottom. Then:
- Save it in a cloud folder you can open from any phone or computer, such as Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive
- Mark that folder as available offline on your phone
- Email a copy to yourself and to one trusted person in Nepal
- Do the same for your citizenship certificate (front and back), visa or e-visa approval, travel insurance policy and flight tickets
- Protect the cloud account with a strong password and two-step verification, because these images are sensitive
Our full pre-trip checklist puts this on the one month list, alongside insurance and bank notifications.
Which documents should you carry copies of?

Carry copies of the documents an embassy and a police station will ask for: your passport photo page, citizenship certificate, and two spare passport photos. A copy of the passport and two photos are on every embassy list we checked, the citizenship copy is on most of them, and having all three with you can save a day.
| Document | Why you may need it | Paper copy | Digital copy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passport photo page | Police report and embassy application ask for it | Yes, kept apart from the passport | Yes, cloud and offline |
| Nepali citizenship certificate (front and back) | Embassies ask for it to confirm citizenship | Yes | Yes |
| Two passport-size photos | Every embassy we checked asks for two | Yes, in a small envelope | Not useful |
| Visa, e-visa or arrival approval | Local immigration may ask what visa you held | Yes | Yes |
| Flight tickets | The airline and embassy will ask for your travel date | Optional | Yes |
| Travel insurance policy and emergency number | To report the loss and claim extra costs | Yes | Yes |
| Hotel bookings | Police and embassy forms ask for your local address | Optional | Yes |
| Embassy contacts for your destination | So you do not have to search when stressed | Yes | Yes, saved in contacts |
| Employer letter (workers in the Gulf) | The Abu Dhabi embassy's travel document page lists a company letter when a passport is lost | If you have one | Yes |
Keep the paper copies in a different bag from the passport, ideally with a travel companion. A copy that was in the stolen bag is no help.
Where can you plan the rest of your trip with this in mind?
A lost passport is rare, and a little preparation turns it from a disaster into an inconvenient day or two. Once you have the copies, the embassy contacts and the app sorted, the rest of trip planning is the enjoyable part. Our guide to the best travel destinations for Nepali travellers compares the most popular choices, and the embassy table above tells you which Nepali mission you would call in each of them.
Before you fly, do three things: save the embassy email and local emergency number for your destination, put your passport and citizenship photos in an offline cloud folder, and install MoFA Mitra from the official store. It takes about ten minutes, and it can save you days if something goes wrong.
Frequently asked questions
What do I do if I lose my Nepali passport abroad?
Search once more, then report the loss to the local police and get a written report stating the date and time. Contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country with that report, a copy of your passport photo page, your citizenship copy and two photos. The embassy can issue a one-way travel document so you can fly back to Nepal.
How do I get an emergency passport from the Nepal embassy?
Nepali embassies abroad do not issue emergency passports. According to the Department of Passports, missions abroad offer only the regular passport service, and the emergency service is available only in Kathmandu. Abroad, the embassy issues a one-way travel document for the journey home, and you apply for a new passport once you are back in Nepal.
What is the MoFA Mitra app?
MoFA Mitra is a mobile app from Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, launched on 26 May 2026 for Android and iOS. Nepalis abroad and their families can register consular requests and grievances, send them directly to the relevant Nepali mission and track the status. Launch reports do not describe applying for a passport or travel document inside the app.
Do I need a police report for a lost passport?
Yes, for a lost passport the Nepali embassies we checked in Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and Abu Dhabi all ask for a police report. Kuala Lumpur asks for a report stating the date and time of the loss. Ask the police for a stamped copy with your passport number and a report number on it.
Is there a Nepali embassy in Bali?
No. There is no Nepali embassy in Indonesia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs list shows Indonesia covered by the Embassy of Nepal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Kuala Lumpur embassy says people living in Indonesia can apply for a travel document by email, wait for verification and receive it by courier. If you are visiting on holiday, email the embassy at once and ask whether you can use the same route.
How long does an emergency travel document take?
It depends on the embassy and on your documents being complete. The Nepali embassies in Bangkok and Colombo say the one-way travel document is usually issued the same day or the next working day. Kuala Lumpur says it is ready on the third working day after you apply. Public holidays add time, so email the embassy as early as you can.
Can I fly home without a passport?
Yes, a Nepali citizen can fly home on the one-way travel document issued by a Nepali embassy, which is valid only for travel to Nepal. Tell your airline before you go to the airport, and if your route connects through another country, ask the airline whether that country accepts the document for transit. India is a separate case, because Nepalis travelling between Nepal and India can use a citizenship certificate for flights.
Should I carry a photocopy of my passport?
Yes. Carry a paper copy of your passport photo page kept apart from the passport, and keep a digital copy in cloud storage that also works offline. The police report and the Nepali embassy application both ask for passport details, and every embassy we checked asks for a copy of the lost passport. Add your citizenship certificate and two spare photos.
Who do I call in an emergency abroad?
Call the local emergency number first if anyone is in danger: for example 1155 for the Tourist Police in Thailand, 999 in Malaysia, Singapore and the UAE, 911 in the Philippines and 112 in India. Then contact the Nepali embassy that covers the country, your airline and your travel insurer. Save these numbers in your phone before you leave Nepal.
Can I use my old passport if I find it after reporting it lost?
No. The Department of Passports says a passport reported as lost or stolen must not be used for travel, even if it is later recovered. Some foreign immigration offices allow travel on a found passport, but for a Nepali passport you should follow the Department's rule and the embassy's advice, and travel on the new document instead.
Passport haraye k garne?
If your Nepali passport is lost abroad, first make sure you are safe, then get a police report, and contact the Nepali embassy that covers that country. Bring a copy of your passport, your citizenship copy and two photos. The embassy issues a one-way travel document for the trip home, and you apply for a new passport in Nepal.
