Cau Vang, the Golden Bridge Vietnam is now famous for, is a 150 meter pedestrian walkway held up by two enormous hands, sitting about 1,400 meters above sea level in the hills west of Da Nang. It opened in June 2018, went around the world on social media within weeks, and has been one of the most photographed structures in Southeast Asia ever since. It is also widely misunderstood. This guide sticks to what is actually true about it, what the visit is really like, and how to plan around the crowds.
What the Golden Bridge actually is
Its Vietnamese name is Cau Vang, which simply means Golden Bridge. It is a curved footbridge, roughly 5 meters wide, with a golden painted deck and railings lined with chrysanthemum planters. It carries no traffic and goes nowhere in particular. It links two points inside the Sun World Ba Na Hills resort and functions as a viewing platform and a walking loop.
That last point matters more than anything else you will read about it. The Golden Bridge is not a public monument, a temple structure or a piece of heritage. It is a designed attraction inside a privately operated hilltop theme park, built to be looked at and walked across. Knowing that in advance changes how you feel when you arrive.

The giant hands, and the myth about them
The hands are not stone, and they are not ancient. They were built in 2017 and 2018 from fiberglass and wire mesh formed around a steel frame, then finished and weathered to look like aged rock. Nearly every article you will find describes them as giant stone hands emerging from the mountain, sometimes with an invented legend attached. There is no legend. The design team wanted the bridge to look as though it were being lifted by the hands of a mountain god, and the moss and cracks were applied deliberately.
Saying this out loud does not spoil the effect. The illusion is well executed, and up close you can see the craft in it. It just means the giant hands bridge Vietnam is famous for is a piece of contemporary set design rather than an archaeological site, and it is fair to know that before you queue.
Where it is and how you get there
Ba Na Hills sits in the mountains around 25 kilometers west of central Da Nang, close enough that most travelers come as a day trip from Da Nang or from Hoi An a little further south. Getting to the base station is straightforward by taxi, private car or an organized tour, and the drive takes about an hour from the Da Nang beachfront.
Getting up the mountain is a different matter. There is no way to reach the Golden Bridge except by cable car. The old French colonial mountain road has been closed to visitor traffic since the cable car network opened in 2009, and hiking it is not permitted because it runs through the Ba Na and Nui Chua nature reserve. Anyone offering you a road transfer to the summit is not describing something that exists.
The cable car ride up
The cable car is genuinely one of the better parts of the day. The Ba Na Hills network runs several lines from different base stations, and the ride climbs steeply over forest, waterfalls and a deep valley. On a clear morning the view from the cabin is better than the view from the bridge itself.
The system holds a Guinness World Record for the longest non stop single track cable car, at 5,801 meters, set by the line that opened in March 2013. That record still stands in the Guinness listing. Which line you ride depends on which base station your ticket or tour uses, and on which routes are running that day, so do not fix your plans around one specific cabin.
What else is at the top of Ba Na Hills
The summit is a full resort complex, and the bridge is only one stop on it. The main draws are the French Village, a built from scratch recreation of a European town square with a church, cobbled streets, hotels and restaurants; Fantasy Park, a large indoor amusement arcade with rides and games aimed squarely at families; and a series of landscaped flower gardens, along with a wine cellar, a pagoda area and a large seated Buddha.
All of it is well maintained and none of it is old. The French Village looks convincing in photos and reads as a film set in person. If you arrive expecting a preserved colonial hill station you will be disappointed. If you arrive expecting a mountaintop theme park with unusually good architecture, you will enjoy it.
The best time of day and year to go
Be on one of the first cable cars of the morning, when the park opens. Organized coaches from Da Nang and Hoi An tend to arrive between mid morning and early afternoon, and by then the bridge is shoulder to shoulder. Late afternoon is the second best window, once the group tours have started heading down.
Season matters just as much. Central Vietnam is driest and clearest roughly from February through August. From September into December the region turns wet, and that stretch also covers the typhoon and flooding window for this coast. Cloud is the other issue: at 1,400 meters the hilltop sits in mist on a large number of days, and a thick cloud day means you will see the railing in front of you and very little else.
Is the Golden Bridge worth it? An honest verdict
It photographs better than it feels on a busy day. The bridge is short, and when several hundred people are on it waiting their turn at the hands, the walk takes a few minutes and involves a lot of standing aside. The images you have seen with empty golden decking were taken at opening time or on a closed shoot.
That said, there is a real reason people love it. The setting is dramatic, the drop into the valley is genuine, and when the mist moves across the span it looks unlike anything else. Go early, treat the bridge as one part of a hilltop day rather than the whole point of the trip, and it holds up well.
How it fits into a Da Nang or central Vietnam trip

Practical notes before you go
- It is noticeably cooler at the top than at sea level. Carry a light jacket even in summer, and something waterproof outside the dry months.
- Wear shoes you can walk and stand in. The hilltop involves stairs, slopes and cobbles, and the stone can be slick when wet.
- Allow at least half a day on the mountain, and a full day if you have children and plan to use Fantasy Park.
- The bridge deck itself is flat and step free, but reaching it and moving around the wider complex involves stairs, so check access routes ahead if mobility is a concern.
- The resort can suspend operations at short notice during storms. It closed for Typhoon Trami in October 2024, and cable cars are the first thing to stop in high wind.
- Check the operator's site the day before you travel for hours and any maintenance notices, since lines and attractions rotate out of service.
Entry paperwork for Vietnam
Most travelers enter Vietnam on an electronic visa. Vietnam's e-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and can be issued for single or multiple entry. To apply you must be outside Vietnam, hold a valid passport, and not fall under any entry suspension.
Apply only through the Vietnamese Immigration Department's official portal at evisa.gov.vn, which is the government National Portal on Immigration. There are many look alike commercial sites charging for a service the government already provides directly, and rules change, so confirm your own situation on the official portal before booking flights.
