Da Nang is the easiest big city in Vietnam to enjoy, because almost everything is close. You can swim before breakfast, climb a marble hill by mid-morning, and still be on the riverfront by dark. The best things to do in Da Nang sit along one beach strip, one river and two short mountain roads. This Da Nang travel guide covers what is worth your time and when to go.
How many days do you need in Da Nang, and when should you go?
Three full days covers the city and one mountain trip. Four or five lets you add Hoi An and a slow day on the sand. Two days works only if you skip Ba Na Hills or the Hai Van Pass.
February to April is the driest stretch. May to August is hot and bright, with the calmest sea. September through December is the wet half, and October is the wettest month by a wide margin. Central Vietnam also sits in the typhoon path, with the strongest risk from September into early December, and heavy rain can flood low ground around the river and Hoi An.
So the best time to visit Da Nang is February to August, with March to May the sweet spot.
What is there to do at My Khe and the beach strip?
My Khe runs for kilometers along the east side of the city and is why many people come. The sand is wide and seafood places line the road behind it.
Swimming is best from about April to September, when the sea is calm. Outside that window the surf builds and rip currents get serious. The city runs a beach patrol through daylight hours and puts out warning markers. Swim between them, and if you feel yourself pulled out, swim sideways along the shore rather than straight back in. For quieter sand, head south toward Non Nuoc or north to the coves on the Son Tra side.
Are the Marble Mountains worth climbing?
Yes, and they take about two hours. Of the five marble and limestone hills inland from the southern beach, only Thuy Son is open to visitors, and it has everything on it.
Take the stone steps or the elevator up to pagodas, coastal viewpoints and caves. Huyen Khong is the famous one, a chamber with a hole in the roof that drops a column of light onto a Buddha figure. Am Phu Cave, the so called hell cave, sits near the main gate. Go early, before the steps get hot.
What can you see on the Son Tra peninsula?
Son Tra is the green hump north of the beach and the best half day in the city. The main stop is Linh Ung Pagoda and its Lady Buddha statue, 67 meters tall and facing out to sea. The complex was finished in 2010. Dress modestly.
Higher up, Ban Co Peak looks over the bridges, the beach and the whole bay. The peninsula holds a large wild population of red shanked douc langurs, best seen feeding early. Site managers ban automatic scooters on the steep roads up to Ban Co because the brakes overheat, so use a manual bike or a car. Parts of the upper peninsula are military land and stay closed.
Should you take the cable car up to Ba Na Hills?
Ba Na Hills is a mountaintop resort about an hour west of the city, reached by a record setting cable car that climbs well over a kilometer in around twenty minutes.

When does the Dragon Bridge breathe fire?
The Dragon Bridge is a steel dragon running the length of the crossing, lit every night. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9pm the head breathes real flame, then switches to jets of water. It lasts about fifteen minutes and is free to watch. Stand on the riverbank rather than the bridge, and expect to get wet near the head. Heavy storms can cancel it.
What are the other Han River bridges, and is a night cruise worth it?
The Han River Bridge is a swing bridge whose central span rotates ninety degrees to let boats through. It turns in the small hours on weeknights and around 11pm on weekend nights, so visitors can watch.
Dragon boats run hour long evening cruises from the city center wharf, passing under the lit bridges. Time it to be back on the bank before 9pm on a show night.
Should you drive the Hai Van Pass or take the tunnel?
The Hai Van Pass is the old road between Da Nang and Lang Co, about 21 kilometers of switchbacks topping out near 500 meters, with an old fort at the summit and views down both coasts. The Hai Van Tunnel, over six kilometers long, is what most cars and buses use.
Motorbikes are banned from the tunnel, which is why the pass survives as a riding road. If you ride it, go slowly, watch for gravel on the bends, and skip it in rain or fog. Otherwise hire a car and driver.
Is Hoi An a day trip or an overnight?
Hoi An sits about 30 kilometers south, roughly 45 minutes by car. Since the 2025 provincial reorganization merged Quang Nam into Da Nang, Hoi An is administratively a ward of Da Nang city rather than a town in a separate province. For a traveler nothing changes: same old town, same lanterns, same drive.

Can you reach Hue by train, and is Phong Nha nearby?
The train to Hue takes roughly two and a half to three and a half hours, running along the coast and over the shoulder of the Hai Van mountain on a line built in the late 1920s. Sit on the sea side heading north. There is no train to Hoi An; the nearest station is Da Nang.
Phong Nha is around seven hours north, so treat it as an overnight rather than a day trip. Son Doong, the world's largest cave passage, is not a Da Nang activity at all: it is a multi day permitted expedition from Phong Nha, booked far ahead.
What should you eat in Da Nang, and where?
Three dishes to find:
- Mi quang, wide turmeric colored noodles in a little intense broth with pork, shrimp, peanuts and herbs.
- Banh xeo, a crisp folded rice pancake wrapped in rice paper and dipped in thick peanut sauce.
- Bun cha ca, a clear noodle soup with springy fish cake, best eaten early in the morning.
Han Market near the river is the tidy central one. Con Market is bigger, messier and better for eating.
Where do you find Cham history, in the city and offshore?
The Museum of Cham Sculpture sits at the west end of the Dragon Bridge and holds the largest collection of Cham sculpture anywhere. Founded in 1915 and opened in 1919, its rooms are arranged by where the pieces were dug up: My Son, Tra Kieu, Dong Duong.
Offshore, the Cham Islands are a granite cluster and a UNESCO recognized biosphere reserve, reached by boat from the pier near Hoi An. Speedboats take twenty to thirty minutes, wooden ferries about an hour. Snorkeling over the reefs is the draw. Boats run reliably in the dry months and are often canceled from September to February, so keep the day loose.

How do you plan your Da Nang trip?
Build it around the weather and the fire show. Pick dates in the dry half of the year, fly into Da Nang International Airport, and keep one weekend night in town.
A clean four day Da Nang itinerary: day one, beach and riverfront. Day two, Marble Mountains then Son Tra. Day three, Ba Na Hills. Day four, Hoi An for the lanterns. Add a fifth day for the Hai Van Pass or the Cham Islands.
For entry, use Vietnam's official government e-visa portal rather than a reseller. The e-visa allows up to 90 days in single and multiple entry forms, and citizens of many countries get a visa exemption for shorter stays, so confirm what applies to your passport.

What is the best month to visit Da Nang?
