Bangkok Airport Guide: Suvarnabhumi vs Don Mueang Explained

31 min read 30 Oct 2026
Long curved glass concourse of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok with travellers walking through

Short answer: Bangkok has two airports, and the Bangkok airport you use depends on your airline, not on where you are going in the city. Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about 31 km east of the city, is the main international airport used by Thai Airways and most full-service airlines. Don Mueang (DMK), about 25 km north, is the low-cost hub used by Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air. The two are about 46 km apart, so always check the three-letter code on your ticket.

This guide explains how Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang differ, which airlines use which airport, how to get into central Bangkok from each one, and how to change between them if your trip involves both. It is written for anyone landing in Thailand, with extra notes for travellers flying from Kathmandu, where some airlines land at BKK and others at DMK. If Bangkok is your first stop in Thailand, keep our complete Thailand travel guide open alongside this one.

Facts come from the airport operator, Airports of Thailand (AOT), the rail operators, Thai government pages and the airlines, and each volatile one carries the date we checked it. Fares change too often to print, so there are none here.

What are Bangkok's two airports?

Thai Airways Boeing 777 parked on the apron at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport

Bangkok's two airports are Suvarnabhumi Airport (code BKK), the large modern hub that opened in 2006, and Don Mueang International Airport (code DMK), the older airport that now serves mostly low-cost airlines. Both are run by Airports of Thailand, both are open 24 hours, and both have international and domestic flights. The difference that matters to you is which airlines fly from each, how far each is from your hotel, and which train line serves it.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) in brief

Suvarnabhumi is the airport most people mean when they say "Bangkok airport". AOT describes one very large passenger terminal that handles both international and domestic flights, with seven concourses, two original runways and a third runway that opened for full operations in November 2024. A midfield satellite building called SAT-1, linked by an underground train, adds 28 more gates. AOT gives 60.8 million passengers for 2017, so expect long walks to the far gates.

The terminal is stacked on several floors. Arrivals are on the 2nd floor, departures and check-in are on the 4th floor, public taxis and buses leave from the 1st floor, and the Airport Rail Link station is in the basement, signed as floor B.

Don Mueang (DMK) in brief

Don Mueang was Bangkok's main airport until Suvarnabhumi opened. It is now the base of Thailand's low-cost airlines. AOT says it was ranked by the CAPA Centre for Aviation as the airport with the most low-cost airline passengers in the world in 2016. In 2017 it handled 37.1 million passengers. It has two runways and two terminals that sit side by side: Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights. A new Terminal 3 is part of AOT's expansion plan but is not open yet.

Don Mueang is smaller and simpler to walk than Suvarnabhumi, which many travellers like. The trade-off is that low-cost flights may park at remote stands, so you may board by bus or stairs rather than an air bridge.

Which airlines use Suvarnabhumi and which use Don Mueang?

As a rule, full-service airlines use Suvarnabhumi and Thailand's low-cost airlines use Don Mueang, but there are exceptions in both directions. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai Vietjet are based at Suvarnabhumi. Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and Thai AirAsia X are based at Don Mueang, and Thai AirAsia also runs some domestic routes from Suvarnabhumi. The only safe rule is to read the airport code on your booking.

Which Bangkok airport do flights from Kathmandu land at?

Most flights from Kathmandu land at Suvarnabhumi: Thai Airways flies daily, and Nepal Airlines also uses BKK when it operates. Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia use Don Mueang, but both had very few or no nonstop dates on sale when we checked. The scheduled flight time is about 3 hours 20 to 30 minutes, and Bangkok is 1 hour 15 minutes ahead of Nepal.

Thai AirwaysSuvarnabhumi (BKK)Operating daily
Nepal AirlinesSuvarnabhumi (BKK)Filed, but operations have been irregular; confirm before booking
Thai Lion AirDon Mueang (DMK)Limited: only one nonstop date showed between mid October and mid December 2026; confirm dates
Thai AirAsiaDon Mueang (DMK)Not confirmed on recent sample dates; check the airline's site

Checked: 30 Oct 2026, our Kathmandu to Bangkok flight guide (schedule check 12 Oct 2026, CAAN schedules, Google Flights). Winter schedules started on 25 October 2026, so always confirm on the airline's own website. For timings, baggage rules and the full route picture, read our guide to the Kathmandu to Bangkok flight, and see which other cities you can reach without a stop in our list of direct flights from Kathmandu.

Why the code on your ticket matters

Thai AirAsia is a good example of why you cannot assume. Its main base is Don Mueang, but it also flies some domestic routes from Suvarnabhumi. In July 2026 it moved nine Suvarnabhumi routes, including Chiang Mai and Phuket, to Don Mueang until 30 September, then started returning to Suvarnabhumi from 1 October. Anyone who booked months earlier may have been moved to the other airport without noticing.

Three habits prevent most mistakes:

  • Read the code, not the city. Your e-ticket will say "Bangkok" for both airports. Look for BKK or DMK next to the flight number.
  • Check again 48 hours before you fly. Low-cost airlines do change airports and times, and they usually tell you by email or app notification, which is easy to miss.
  • Tell your driver the full name. Taxi drivers know "Suvarnabhumi" and "Don Mueang" better than BKK or DMK.

Which Bangkok airport is better, BKK or DMK?

Neither Bangkok airport is better for everyone. Suvarnabhumi suits long-haul travellers, families with lots of luggage and anyone connecting on one ticket, because it has more airlines, more lounges and a fast train into the city. Don Mueang suits travellers on low-cost domestic and regional flights who want a smaller airport that is quicker to walk through. Your airline usually makes the choice for you.

How are the terminals laid out, and what is SAT-1?

Travellers inside the bright terminal concourse of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok

Suvarnabhumi has one main terminal plus SAT-1, a satellite concourse in the middle of the airfield reached by an underground driverless train called the Automated People Mover (APM). Don Mueang has two connected terminals: Terminal 1 for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights. Knowing the floors before you land saves a lot of walking with a luggage trolley.

Checked: 30 Oct 2026, AOT, Thailand.go.th, Grab Thailand (21 Sep 2026) and Thaiest (updated 4 May 2026).

SAT-1 and the Automated People Mover

SAT-1, short for Midfield Satellite 1, is a separate concourse with gates numbered S101 to S128. It partly opened in September 2023 and was fully in use from early 2024. AOT says it adds about 15 million passengers of yearly capacity.

You do not check in at SAT-1. You check in and clear security and passport control in the main terminal as normal, then follow the signs for SAT-1 and take the underground train. According to Wikipedia's entry on the system, the ride takes about 2 minutes and trains run every 3 minutes, 24 hours a day. On arrival the train brings you back to the main terminal for immigration and bags.

What this means for you:

  • If your gate starts with S, add time. Our rule of thumb is 20 to 30 minutes extra from passport control to the gate.
  • Shop in the main terminal first. It has the widest range of shops and food. Emirates opened a lounge in SAT-1 in January 2025.
  • On arrival at an S gate, you simply ride the train first, then follow the "Arrivals" signs.

Don Mueang Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

Don Mueang's Terminal 1 handles all international flights, so arrivals from Kathmandu and departures to other countries use it. Terminal 2 handles domestic flights, for example to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi or Hat Yai. The two buildings are joined, and you can walk between them inside the airport. Airport buses and the shuttle to Suvarnabhumi leave from the 1st floor of Terminal 1, and a pedestrian bridge links the airport to the Red Line station across the road.

If you arrive internationally at Don Mueang and fly on domestically, you clear immigration and customs in Terminal 1, collect your bags if your ticket is not through-checked, then walk to Terminal 2 to check in again.

How do you get from Suvarnabhumi to the city?

The fastest way from Suvarnabhumi to central Bangkok is usually the Airport Rail Link, which reaches Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes and connects to the BTS Skytrain and the MRT. Public metered taxis run 24 hours from the 1st floor, and Grab has a dedicated pick-up point at Gate 4. For a hotel near a rail station, take the train; for a family with heavy bags or a late-night arrival, a taxi or Grab is simpler.

Bus timetables on the Thai government's Suvarnabhumi transport page date from 2023, so confirm hours at the information counter.

Airport Rail Link: how it works

The Airport Rail Link, now operated by Asia Era One under the name City Line, is an 8-station line from Suvarnabhumi to Phaya Thai. The stations are Suvarnabhumi, Lat Krabang, Ban Thap Chang, Hua Mak, Ramkhamhaeng, Makkasan, Ratchaprarop and Phaya Thai. The trip takes about 27 minutes end to end, and trains run every 10 to 13 minutes, most often at peak times.

  • To change to the MRT Blue Line, get off at Makkasan and walk to MRT Phetchaburi. This is handy for Sukhumvit, Silom, Chinatown and the Grand Palace area.
  • To change to the BTS Skytrain, ride to the end at Phaya Thai for the Sukhumvit Line towards Siam, Victory Monument and Mo Chit.
  • Ratchaprarop is the stop for Pratunam and its hotels.
  • The old express service is suspended. All trains stop at every station, so ignore older guides that mention a separate express train.

These are commuter trains and fill up at rush hour, so with big suitcases or small children a taxi is often less stressful. Our guide to places to visit in Bangkok shows which sights sit near which station.

Public taxi at Suvarnabhumi: how the queue works

Use only the official public taxi rank on the 1st floor. AOT runs it 24 hours between Gates 4 and 7, with automatic queue ticket machines on the same floor.

  • Keep your queue ticket until the end of the ride. For problems, AOT's Call Center is 1722.
  • The meter is used. AOT notes that a Ministry of Transport airport surcharge is added and passengers pay expressway tolls. For long trips the price can be agreed with the driver.
  • Ignore anyone in the arrivals hall offering a taxi. Go down to the 1st floor rank instead.

Taxi journey time depends on traffic, which is worst on weekday mornings and evenings and in heavy rain. In the evening rush, the train usually wins.

Grab at Suvarnabhumi

Grab, Southeast Asia's main ride-hailing app, now has an official pick-up area at Suvarnabhumi, according to Grab Thailand's September 2026 announcement: Level 1, Gate 4, with 12 lanes. When you book, choose "Grab Pick-up Point". The app gives you a four-digit PIN; you go to lanes A to D and give the PIN to the waiting driver. Set the app up before you leave home. Our list of best travel apps covers Grab and the other apps worth installing.

Buses and vans from Suvarnabhumi

The intercity bus terminal at Gate 8 has route 389 to Pattaya (Jomtien) and route 789 to Hua Hin, so you can go straight to the beach without entering Bangkok. If Pattaya is your first stop, see our guide to things to do in Pattaya.

How do you get from Don Mueang to the city?

The quickest way from Don Mueang to central Bangkok is the SRT Dark Red Line from Don Mueang station, reached by a pedestrian bridge from the airport. It runs to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue) in about 15 to 20 minutes, where you change to the MRT Blue Line. The A1 to A4 airport buses go to BTS Mo Chit, Victory Monument, Pratunam and Khao San, and public taxis run 24 hours.

The Red Line from Don Mueang, step by step

  1. After customs, follow signs to the SRT Red Line or Don Mueang station. A covered pedestrian bridge crosses the main road to the station, which sits in front of the airport on Kamphaeng Phet 6 Road.
  2. Take a train towards Krung Thep Aphiwat. The Dark Red Line runs from Rangsit to Krung Thep Aphiwat, and Don Mueang is between Lak Hok and Kan Kheha. SRTET lists trains about every 10 minutes at peak times and every 15 minutes otherwise.
  3. At Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, change to the MRT Blue Line at Bang Sue for Chatuchak, Sukhumvit, Silom and Chinatown. There is no direct BTS link; use the MRT to Chatuchak Park for BTS Mo Chit.
  4. Krung Thep Aphiwat is also Bangkok's main long-distance rail terminal, useful if you are taking a train north.

The Red Line beats a jammed expressway, but most hotels are not near Bang Sue, so you will usually change trains once.

How do you transfer between the two airports?

Transferring between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang means a road trip of about 46 km, usually 1 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Passengers with a flight from the other airport on the same day can use AOT's free shuttle bus, which runs 05:00 to midnight. Other options are a public taxi, Grab, the BKK to Don Mueang public van, or rail with two changes. Either way you must pass Thai immigration and collect your bags first.

The free shuttle: who can use it

The free inter-airport shuttle is for transfer passengers, not for sightseeing. The Thai government page says you must show your boarding pass and your passport or ID card to staff before boarding, and Time Out Bangkok reports that staff accept a ticket or boarding pass for a same-day flight from the airport you are heading to. Without it, you will be turned away.

Rules can change, so confirm on the day with AOT's 24-hour Call Centre on 1722 or at the information counter. If the next shuttle would leave you short of time, take a taxi instead.

How much time do you need for a self-transfer?

For a self-transfer between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang on separate tickets, plan on at least 5 to 6 hours between your scheduled landing and your next departure, and more in the evening rush or around Thai holidays. That figure is our own planning advice, built from the official pieces: arrival formalities, 1 to 2 hours on the road, and AOT's advice to be at the airport early.

StepTime to allowWhy
Landing to gate, possible SAT-1 train15 to 30 minutesTaxiing, walking, the APM if you arrive at an S gate
Immigration and baggage45 to 90 minutesQueues are longest when several long-haul flights land together
Wait for the shuttle or taxiUp to 60 minutesShuttle frequency varies
Road transfer60 to 120 minutesOfficial shuttle journey time; worse in rain and rush hour
Check-in and bag drop before counters closeArrive 2 to 3 hours before departureAOT's advice for domestic and international flights

A few more points matter on separate tickets:

  • Your bags will not be transferred. On separate bookings you collect your luggage, clear customs and check it in again at the other airport.
  • On separate tickets, a late first flight is your problem. If a delay from Kathmandu makes you miss a low-cost flight from Don Mueang, you will normally have to buy a new ticket. Travel insurance with missed-connection cover helps; our guide to travel insurance from Nepal explains what to look for.
  • Overnight connections are often wiser. If your onward flight is early in the morning, a night at an airport hotel is calmer than racing across the city.
  • Check baggage allowances on both tickets. Full-service airlines include more checked baggage than low-cost airlines, so a bag that flew free from Kathmandu may cost extra on the next leg. Our packing and baggage guide from Kathmandu covers weight limits and what goes in hand luggage.

One ticket or two: when do you not need to change airports?

If both flights are on one booking and both use Suvarnabhumi, you usually stay airside: you follow the "Transfer" signs, pass a security check and walk or take the train to your next gate without entering Thailand. Check with your airline that your bags are checked through to your final destination. The moment your second flight leaves from Don Mueang, though, you must enter Thailand, which brings the entry rules in the next section into play.

What should you do on arrival?

On arrival at either Bangkok airport, follow the "Arrivals" signs to immigration, have your passport and any entry documents ready, collect your bags, walk through customs, then sort out a SIM card and transport in the arrivals hall. All foreign visitors complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before arrival; our Thailand visa page explains the current entry requirements for Nepali passport holders.

Small things that help Nepali travellers in the immigration queue:

  • Keep your hotel name and address in English saved on your phone, with screenshots of your bookings in case the airport Wi-Fi is slow.
  • Charge your phone before landing. Your bookings, your Grab app and your eSIM all live on it.
  • Families go to the officer together, with a parent holding the children's passports.

At Suvarnabhumi, True lists tourist SIM counters inside baggage claim and on the 2nd floor arrivals level after customs (Exits B and C); at Don Mueang, in the international arrivals hall at Exits 3, 4 and 6. Take your passport, because a Thai SIM is registered to it, and True sells one tourist SIM per passport.

If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy a Thai eSIM online before leaving Nepal and switch it on after landing, which skips the counter queue. Keep your Nepali SIM in a safe place if you need it for bank OTPs when you get home.

Money exchange counters operate at both airports. Change only a small amount for the train or taxi, and compare rates in the city. The local currency is the Thai baht (THB); for how much foreign currency you can carry out of Nepal, read our guide to the foreign currency limit from Nepal.

Both airports are open 24 hours, so you can wait inside overnight, but neither is designed for sleeping; for a dawn departure an airport hotel is calmer. Vegetarian travellers should ask about fish sauce and meat stock, which turn up in many Thai dishes.

How early should you reach for departure?

Row of numbered check in counters in a modern airport departure hall before opening

For an international flight from Bangkok, reach the airport at least 3 hours before departure; for a domestic flight, at least 2 hours. That is the advice Suvarnabhumi gave passengers ahead of busy holiday periods, and AOT's Don Mueang page also asks passengers to allow at least 2 hours because there are several steps. Add more time if your gate is at SAT-1 or you are travelling at a peak time.

FlightArrive at leastAdd extra time if
International from Suvarnabhumi (for example to Kathmandu)3 hours before departureYour gate starts with S (SAT-1), you need a VAT refund, or it is a Thai holiday weekend
Domestic from Suvarnabhumi2 hours before departureYou are checking bags at a busy morning bank of flights
International from Don Mueang Terminal 13 hours before departure (our advice; AOT's general minimum for Don Mueang is 2 hours)Low-cost airlines close counters strictly; long queues for bag drop
Domestic from Don Mueang Terminal 22 hours before departureRemote stand boarding by bus

Checked: 30 Oct 2026, Khaosod English (3 Mar 2023) quoting Suvarnabhumi Airport, and AOT Don Mueang transport page. These are minimums. Your airline sets its own check-in closing time, so read the rules on your booking.

Departure tips for the flight home to Kathmandu

  • Confirm the airport code one more time. The most common mistake is going to Suvarnabhumi for a Don Mueang flight, or the reverse. With 46 km between them, that mistake usually means a missed flight.
  • Leave the city early. Late-afternoon traffic is heavy; near the Airport Rail Link or Red Line, the train is the most predictable choice.
  • Claim your VAT refund before check-in. Thailand's Revenue Department asks tourists to show the goods, the VAT refund form (P.P.10) and the original tax invoices to customs immediately before check-in. Allow time for the queue.
  • Weigh your bags at the hotel. Shopping adds weight fast, and low-cost airlines charge for excess baggage. Gold and jewellery buyers should read our note on buying gold in Dubai and Bangkok before packing.
  • Know Nepal's customs rules. What you can bring back duty-free is set by Nepal, not Thailand. Our guide to the Nepal customs allowance explains the limits.
  • Festival flights fill up. Flights to Kathmandu before Dashain and Tihar and in the winter lagan season are busy, so expect longer check-in queues.

If this is your first international trip, our first-time flight tips walk you through boarding passes, security trays and what to keep in your hand luggage, and our guide to international departure at Kathmandu airport covers the Nepal side of the journey.

How do Bangkok's airports fit into a Thailand trip?

Bangkok's two airports shape a Thailand trip more than most people expect. If you fly into Suvarnabhumi from Kathmandu and then on to Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai, check whether that domestic flight leaves from the same airport. Booking both flights from BKK, or both from DMK, saves a cross-city transfer and gives you more time on the beach. If you plan to go straight to Pattaya, the intercity bus from Suvarnabhumi skips central Bangkok altogether.

Timing matters too. Many Nepali families travel during the Dashain and Tihar holidays, which usually fall between late September and November, and couples often go after winter weddings. That is also the start of Thailand's cooler, drier season, when the airports are busy, so keep your first evening in Bangkok light. Our Thailand travel tips cover the everyday basics, from dress codes at temples to tipping, and the Thailand itinerary guide shows how to split time between Bangkok and the coast.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bangkok airport do Nepal flights use?

Most Kathmandu flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), where Thai Airways flies daily and Nepal Airlines lands when it operates. Thai Lion Air and Thai AirAsia use Don Mueang (DMK), though few or no nonstop dates were on sale in October 2026. Always check the airport code on your ticket, because both airports appear as "Bangkok".

What is the difference between BKK and DMK?

BKK is Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main international airport about 31 km east of the city, used by Thai Airways and most full-service airlines. DMK is Don Mueang, the older airport about 25 km north, used mainly by low-cost airlines such as Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air. They are about 46 km apart.

How far is Suvarnabhumi from Bangkok city?

Suvarnabhumi Airport is about 31 km east of Bangkok, according to Airports of Thailand. The Airport Rail Link reaches Phaya Thai in central Bangkok in about 27 minutes and runs from 05:30 to midnight. A taxi can take much longer in the weekday rush hours or heavy rain.

Is there a free shuttle between Bangkok airports?

Yes, Airports of Thailand runs a free shuttle bus between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang from 05:00 to midnight, but only for passengers with a same-day flight from the other airport. Show your ticket or boarding pass and passport. It leaves from Suvarnabhumi 2nd floor Gate 3 and Don Mueang Terminal 1, 1st floor Gate 6.

How do I get a taxi at Suvarnabhumi?

Go down to the 1st floor of Suvarnabhumi's passenger terminal, where the official public taxi rank runs 24 hours between Gates 4 and 7. Take a queue ticket from the machine and keep it until the end of the ride; AOT's Call Center is 1722. The meter is used, plus an airport surcharge and tolls.

Can I take the train from Don Mueang?

Yes. Don Mueang station on the SRT Dark Red Line is linked to the airport by a pedestrian bridge. Trains run from about 05:00 to midnight and reach Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue) in about 15 to 20 minutes, where you change to the MRT Blue Line for central Bangkok.

How long does it take to transfer between BKK and DMK?

The road transfer between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, according to the Thai government page for the free shuttle. For a self-transfer on separate tickets, allow at least 5 to 6 hours between landing and your next departure to cover immigration, bags, waiting and check-in.

Is there a SIM card counter at Suvarnabhumi?

Yes, Suvarnabhumi has several tourist SIM counters, including on the 2nd floor arrivals level after customs and inside the baggage claim area. You need your passport to register a Thai SIM. If your phone supports eSIM, you can buy a Thai eSIM online before you leave.

Can I sleep in Bangkok airport?

Both Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, are open 24 hours, so you can wait inside overnight. Neither is built for sleeping: halls are bright, busy and benches have armrests. Paid lounges are an option if your ticket or card gives access. For late arrivals or dawn departures, an airport hotel is more comfortable.

Do I need to go through immigration to change airports in Bangkok?

Yes. Moving between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang means leaving the airport, so you must pass Thai immigration, collect your bags and clear customs. That means meeting Thailand's entry rules. If both flights are on one ticket and both leave from Suvarnabhumi, you can usually stay airside and follow the transfer signs.

How early should I reach Bangkok airport for my flight to Kathmandu?

Reach the Bangkok airport at least 3 hours before an international flight to Kathmandu, as Suvarnabhumi advises for international departures. Leave extra time if your gate is at SAT-1, you need a VAT refund, or you are flying before Dashain and Tihar, when flights to Nepal are full and queues longer.

SIM cards, eSIMs and money at arrivals

Both airports have mobile network counters.
